What are some changes in tv characters that were for the better? I'd say Lisa Simpson. Though im not a big Lisa fan, in the earliest simpsons episodes (as well as the ullman shorts) she was simply a female version of Bart. "Moaning Lisa" actually gave her a character and personality all her own.

Andy on the Office changing from kiss-ass with anger issues to lovable goof was pretty natural and allows for much better humorous opportunities.

Stewie Griffin. Granted, he's still an evil genius, but overtime he evolved past being just a one joke character.

Believe it or not, but I pick Spike from BtVS. It was established early on that while a whirling dervish in his own right, he has a serious dependency on those close to him. After getting chipped and losing Dru completely, that meant that he wound up transferring that dependency to the strongest female personality that he associated with, meaning that he developed that unhealthy fascination on Buffy. Eventually that dependency led him to alter his own self to adhere to what Buffy needed to accept him in any way, shape, or form. Truth be told, he probably did the same for Dru 200 years ago. To me, it actually worked and made him a deeper character, especially when he came to terms with the fact that Buffy at best was transferring her own feelings about Angel onto him when he changed himself for her.

The character also came full circle on Angel, eventually doing good for its sake, and even doing his poem not to impress the likes of Cecily, but simply for himself.

George Costanaza. In the earliest eps. you can see that Jason Alexander is doing a sorta Woody Allen impersonation, and George is just this whiny, nebbishy, nerdy guy.. then he found his niche and became maybe my favorite tv character ever.

Quinn Morgandorffer. As the show went on, her character actually began to shoe a great deal of depth and character growth

Morgan Grimes.
Hell, In Season 3, he not only matured, but when Chuck brought him into the fold, he was actually and immediately useful, even Beckman gave him credit.

Spike on Buffy is a great one but also in that same universe Cordelia Chase went from being a snobby high school cheerleader to one of the most emotionally developed characters after she took on Doyles powers. By season four of Angel she is deep and emotional. To think the change started by dating Xander.

Spock started off as just a pointy-aired officer, but after a few episodes turned into the analytical anti-emotional alien that become famous.

As the Boy Meets World series aged, Eric Matthews turned into this ridiculous character who was never serious and always funny.

This 100%. Spike's transformation from villain to eventual hero wasn't always pretty, but it allowed for a deeper, better character. Then again, I could be biased because I'm a huge Spike fan. I'll also say that Wesley's character changed for the best. He began, on Buffy, as a pompous Watcher that was both clumsy and unlikeable to the other characters. After moving to Angel he started as the same, but became a trusted member of Team Angel and eventually became a deadly man not to be trifled with. He lost his clumsiness, became much more capable in the field and also saw his morality become muddied and grayed. Heck, he even kept a woman chained up in a closet for an entire Summer. So, in addition to Spike, I say Wesley as well.

I'd also say Fred went through some good changes too before she changed into Illyria.
