Even if the Yankees land Lee they are not going to be the best team in the East.

Zomg, but the Yankees are killing baseball spending so much dough! you absolutely will not hear this said one time, by anyone, about Boston. I can already picture Dan Shaughnessy's next article portraying the Sox as a scrappy, hard luck underdog, shrewdly fighting against the big bad Yankees. I seriously love both moves, though. And poor, poor Tampa.

Nah. If anything Tampa will move. Though I think the team would do fine if they moved to another stadium in the area that isn't in a horrible location.

sports.espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/news/story?id=5901141Rangers telling Lee to tell them what it will take for him to stay. I dont see any reason not to try to lock him up from their end. If he declines then maybe you get stuck but if they had to try to move him in 4 years somebody would probably be willing to take him for the remainder of his deal even if Texas has to pay some like with the A-Rod deal. To get Lee for the next few seasons is worth whatever hassle he may or may not be in the future.

As much as I love the Crawford signing I'm worried that the Sox have too many lefty hitters. It may be a problem if the MFY add Lee to Sabathia

Carlos Pena: I like it. 1) 1-year contract 2) Pena was best defensive market option 3) left-handed power hitter who takes walks 4) reputation as solid clubhouse guy 5) better option than Hoffpauir/LaHair/Baker/Nady platoon or moving Aramis/Colvin 6) solidifies Colvin's spot as the RF, with Kosuke the #4 unless Jim can move hin.
Not sure, though, how I feel about the Cubs' interest in Matt Garza. He's a decent #3 starter. The Cubs have those already. Better to listen to interest in Gorzo and hold from strength rather than continue to muddy the situation.

Laughable contract for Crawford. He's a good player, but not worth what he got paid. Sucks for the Angels in the short term, but I'd hate to see them saddled with that poor contract If I'm Cliff Lee, I realize now how much more desperate the Yankees are to get him. Dude should command like 160 million or something. Yanks will cave. They can't go an offseason without landing 1 big FA, especially after Boston just added 2 good players Wha.....wha....wha....whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??? Didnt see that coming. But according to sources he was going to end up with the Angels. Maybe they meant in 2018.... And this is one of the reasons I take every "rumor" with a grain of salt. The media doesn't know what the hell is actually happening, they rarely do. They just speculate and fans cling to their every word

Well, now Red Sox fans can't make fun of the Nationals for spending so much money for Werth when they spent just as much money for Crawford.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that a Major League Baseball player who played every day couldn't hit over .200....that is just pathetic.

Even if the Yankees land Lee they are not going to be the best team in the East. Right. How about they get on the field in April for that to be figured out. I believe the Red Sox were the team with historic depth at the pitching position the last couple of years and did absolutely nil. Also, RED SOX TRYIN TO BUY CHAMPIONSHIPS!!1 HARD SALARY CAP! SALARY CAP! SALARY CAPPPPPPP!So, after years upon years of downing the Yankees way of spending ridiculous amounts of money and harping on and on about homegrown talent, the Sox go out and spend some serious dough. I'm sure Red Sox Nation are surprised and disappointed in the front office succumbing to the Yankee way, but it won't make the team any less the scrappy, blue-collar, under-under-underdog ballclub that they are.

The Red Sox have out Yankeed the masters thus far this offseason.
And for the record, I hate that it has come to this and I *DO* want a salary cap.
*waits for everyone to call him a liar*
EDIT: The Yankees pretty much HAVE to go get Lee right now, dont they?
I can hear the brinks truck now

I think Crawford's deal will look horrible in the long run. What are you paying for? Speed and defense? He's never hit more than 20 home runs in his career, so why are you giving the guy $20 mil per year for then? You can pick up any center fielder for 1/10th of the price and still contribute. Look at Brett Gardner, is he even making $1 million per year?
Werth's contract is just as bad, but the guy provides power and speed, defense. The only difference is he's 2 years older than Carl. On the other hand, stuff like speed diminishes as you get older. You're gonna be paying a 35 year old Crawford 20 million to do what exactly?

Crawford contract is pretty dumb, especially for a franchise that prides itself on not overpaying players dramatically once they're past their prime.
Werth isn't great and his contract is insane and irresponsible, but the guy doesn't rely on speed for most of his effectiveness in the field and added effectiveness while batting. Once this guy turns, say, 35, nobody's going to want him.
Now, I suppose that could all be negated if the Sox win two titles with him or something and bring in extra revenue, but it's still a very, very silly contract.
That all said: HARD SALARY CAP NOW, DAMNIT.

If I was fielding a team, I'd rather have Desmond Jennings in Left making less than a million bucks, than Crawford making 20 mil a year.

Possibly in reaction to the Carl Crawford deal (or Nolan Ryan's "Sign with us. We'll pay whatever you want. Pretty please?" offer to Lee's agent), the Yankees up their offer to Cliff Lee to seven years.
Also, I think Crawford's being WAY overpaid. He's a good player, but not that good. Honestly I think he's being even more overpaid than Jayson Werth is, who I think is one of the more underrated outfielders out there.
