It seems clear that Cole loves his broadcast partner, and Lawler were to become champion, he wouldn't be doing the commentary anymore. So to preserve their friendship, he had to do it.

I'm really interested to see how this plays out. Because, realistically, there is absolutely no way around Jerry just beating the crap out of Cole for entirety of the time they remain together.
Unless Lawler comes out tomorrow with like 6 title belts and says, "I was so pissed off that Cole cost me the WWE Championship, I had to go out and win 6 Memphis championships last week. That's two more than usual!"
