GG Lady Butthurt. I wonder if any of the rock stars Weird Al has parodied over the years have not only been cool with being parodied, but asked to help him write it. One of the conditions of Money For Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies was the Mark Knopfler got to play guitar on the track.

It's awesome that this has turned into an Al appreciation thread.

Some sort of super parody festival would be amazing
WEIRD AL THE LONELY ISLAND a returning FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS
Throw in some stand up, and some smaller groups to pad it out. Would be fun times

I'm torn. On one hand, I hate making judgments without hearing both sides. I can maybe see that she didn't feel it was an appropriate song to make a parody of - but in that case, why make him go through all the effort just to say no? If that is her argument, its a lame one. There isnt a song in the world thats above parody. Just because that is your opinion does not mean it is the artist's. Some songs are about dead relatives and such, I would assume that would be pretty serious.

Yeah, I know its a celebration of diversity, but I think she is being a little heavy handed here. Like I said, she takes her role in society way too seriously. She is an entertainer. That's it.

I've heard "ze" proposed as a gender neutral pronoun. And LGBT has added a letter every year it seems, and is now LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, questioning, intersex, asexual). Yeah....English hasn't quite caught up with our social sensibilities. "Ze" is correct... I also know some people who go by "they", and every once in a while somebody pops up who goes by "it". I think there are a few other gender neutral ones but "ze" is the most common. Although truth be told I don't know a single person who actually prefers these pronouns (although I'm sure they exist), it just tends to be used to refer to a person whose gender or pronoun preference you're unsure of. I have no idea what pronouns GaGa prefers. And yeah, the adding of letters can get out of control. There's actually two Q's - questioning and queer. And I'd heard that the A was for "ally". This is the problem. Believe me, I know that we need to be inclusive of everybody within our label, but... At some point we just need to pick something simple and stick with it. I just call it queer to refer to everybody under the umbrella, but even then there are huge problems with just using that - "queer" is used as a slur in many areas, a lot of people don't want to identify as queer, etc etc. It's just a disaster to come up with a label that is all inclusive that everybody can agree on. As far as the pronouns go, I just use my best judgment. If someone is in drag, I refer to them as the gender they are identifying with, not the biological wrong gender. On LGBTQ etc. etc., I usually just use gay as an umbrella term unless someone prefers otherwise. On topic: That was rude of Lady Gaga to string Mr. Yankovic along like that only to deny him the right to parody one of his songs, even though he has a fair use right to do so. The song was tastefully done and inoffensive. It was obviously meant in good humour and the proceits would have benefitted a worthy cause. Shame.

Some songs are about dead relatives and such, I would assume that would be pretty serious. You could then make the argument that once an artist releases a song, it becomes the public's to interpret and enjoy. If you're that intent on preserving only your meaning to a song, then don't release it. Keep it to yourself. That's incredibly pretentious to deny your audience access to its own interpretation.

If one person in this world is above being made fun of, everyone in the world is. I actually dig Gaga, but she should lighten the f*** up.

One of the conditions of Money For Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies was the Mark Knopfler got to play guitar on the track. Similarly, Ray Manzarek played the keyboards on "Craigslist", Al's style parody of The Doors:

Coolio did the same thing too after he and the record company still gave him permission to use "Gangsta's Paradise" initially. Coolio was being a jerk about it. It sounds like Gaga was not being a lady. Hopefully she didn't take the length or rather, depth Coolio did. What made that case so ironic is that the hook and the melody is from a Stevie Wonder song.

I still love the story from Don McLean about "The Saga Begins." From what I hear, when the song came out, his children got a copy and played it around the house CONSTANTLY! Later, during a live performance, Don said he actually got the lyrics to American Pie and Saga Begins mixed up!!!
That's just awesome! I'd actually think it'd be funny/cool if Don Mclean sang Saga Begins during a concert as a joke!

As far as the Gaga/Al thing goes, I'm going to reserve judgment as we've really only heard Al's side. And as a lifelong Al fan, I'd love to jump to his side but there are always reasons behind what people do. When we hear Gaga's reasoning behind it, then I'll jump on his side. The song itself... I have to say, is his best in years. I thought Al was losing a step when it came to specific song parodies vs. genre parodies like Craigslist, but this reminds me of really good, old-school, UHF-era Al. Dare I say... VINTAGE Weird Al!

I doubt she'd say anything coherent.
She could say "Purple Monkey Dishwasher Weird Al Meat Sunshine" and music critics would praise her and call her the new Bob Dylan

that song was great!! its not a horrible take down...at least theres no line of "its hard to bargle novle vouss with all these marbles in my mouth" that his Smells like Nirvana song had...this is just a song about her gimmic basically....i highly doubt this song would have hurt Gaga's Grace Jones, Klaus Nomi, Peter Gabriel, Goldust rip off gimmic that she has going on....its a song, if Weird Al isnt making fun of you then your not a musical artist....i mean Kurt Cobain LOVED smells like nirvana....Michael Jackson LOVED every parody al did of him...and Jackson was going to have Weird Al open for him on a tour in i think 88 but Al couldnt do it because he was shooting UHF. Even Chamillionaire(remember that guy?) thanked Al for using Ridin' Dirty for White & Nerdy. Most of the music industry understands that once Weird Al wants to parody you, you've officially made it.

From what I can gather about Lady GaGa, I would imagine her reasons for denying the parody are this.
Forcing Al to record to it and then denying it gives you one day's more free publicity than just letting Al release the song.
Story A-- Gaga makes Al record a parody, then rejects it. Big news!
Story B-- Weird Al does parody of GaGa and it's his new single. Booooooooooring!

It's her song and if asks he has to be prepared to occasionally get a "no." *I* would be honored by it, but she's not me.
