Who do you blame for Apollo getting killed in the ring?
EDIT: Aside from Drago obviously. The point is who could've prevented this from happening.

Drago. Drago wasn't an option?
Eh, Apollo never shoulda took the fight, so I guess him.

My vote is the ref. Apollo is in danger several times during the fight and can't defend himself, but doesn't stop the fight. Drago punched Apollo several seconds after the first round bell, but the ref doesn't stop the fight there and disqualify Drago. Then Drago shoves away the ref in the one time he tries to step in. Another chance to stop the fight on a DQ for touching an official, but he just allows Drago to continue flailing on Apollo. That ref's license should be revoked.

It was made evident from the beginning that Apollo was training and fighting with his ego, not his heart. That, in addition to him being way past his prime, is why he lost (and died).

I thought something happened to Anton Apollo Ono. Did you utter his surname in an expletive fashion? Cuz that would be appropriate.

You can blame each of the three options equally.
Apollo shouldn't have taken the fight in the first place and his insistence towards Rocky to not throw in the towel no matter what, after seeing the beating Apollo took at the end of round 1 the ref should've stopped the fight, and Rocky most definitely should've thrown in the towel after the first round.

Actually if one thinks about it, if Apollo isn't killed, then Rocky doesn't go out for justice against Drago and then end Communism as a threat by defeating him. Hence, Apollo's martyrdom may've been a historical necessity. So, say for example Sam Beckett leapt into Apollo, the correct thing to do would still be to allow him to be pummeled by the Siberian.

I read how Apollo didn't really train for the fight. At least when Rocky went against Drago, he went through some intense, and I mean INTENSE, training. Apollo was past his prime and didn't really know what he was in for going against Ivan.

If I can change, you can change, we all can change. Exactly. Had that not happened then we'd have Yakov Smirnoff on one dollar bills or some such. Or put another way, cuz I like the imagery of Sam Beckett leaping into Apollo: Al: Sam, Ziggy says the only way to prevent the Red Menace is for Rocky to fight Drago and end it. He won't do that if Apollo walks away.. Sam, Creed's got to die.. Sam: Oh boy.
