Someone just mentioned Radiata Stories. On one hand I f***ING LOVE THE GAME! All the characters grew on me, I liked the gameplay, and loved the sotry but..........God the lack of resolution really hurt the game and I wish we got the chance to do a bit more with the recruitable characters. Man I want a new Radiata Stories so badly.

I remember asking for Kingdom Hearts for Christmas one year and getting Shadow Hearts instead. I was really pissed off and didn't even play the game for several months. When I finally did play it, I was very happy that I did. Though it is one of my least favorite RPG's that I've actually beaten, it was still a very fun game. I never bothered to play any of the others in the series.
Ok so I'm definitely going to pick up Persona 3 FES based on recommendations, then move on to Persona 4 if I like it. I've also been thinking of picking up a new RPG for the DS lately. The choices that I'm considering are The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy 4, Dragon Quest IX or Dragon Quest IV. Also Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2 is one I'm considering.
I've never played any of the DQ games (bows head in shame) so I'm not sure what to expect in that area. Never played Final Fantasy 4 and not so sure I want to because I've heard it is hard as balls. In terms of story I'm a sucker for futuristic storylines ala FF7-FF8 and more light hearted ones like Super Mario RPG or Earthbound.

Anybody ever play Baiten Kaitos 1 or 2 on the Gamecube? They are some really great games made by some of the Chrono Trigger team that broke away from Squaresoft.

FFIV DS is supposed to be pretty darn hard, but the other editions shouldn't be too much trouble. The original US release of FFIV (Final Fantasy II for SNES) is actually very easy.
What to expect from Dragon Quest: Very traditional, old-school gameplay. Simple, but well-executed stories (if you're playing Dragon Quest V, one of the best stories in RPG history). Colorful worlds and characters. Art by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame. And, if you're playing VI, VII, or IX, one of the best job systems in an RPG (in my opinion). They're also fairly long games, so you do get a lot of game for your buck (especially Dragon Quest/Warrior VII, it's a legit 100 hour game).
What I would do, though, is go for Dragon Quest VIII first and see if you like it before getting any other game in the series. It's one of the best games in the series, and a very good entry point. I would also recommend V for DS, but it's a bit rare and a little pricey.
Dragon Quest IX and The World Ends with You for DS are both the top of the heap. The World Ends with You is one of the most innovative games I've ever played.
I really would urge you to at least try Shadow Hearts: Covenant, it's one of the best games, period, of the decade.
Futuristic, but light-hearted...hmm. Rogue Galaxy comes to mind, it's about a group of space pirates and it's not all that dark.
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga is certainly futuristic, but it's also EXTREMELY dark.
As for lightheartedness...well, Radiata Stories never takes itself seriously (even if the main character can be an annoying dork), and the Disgaea games (even though they're strategy-RPGs) are often comedy gold. Persona 3 and 4 also have scores of great humorous moments.

Yeah the game is humorous but it does take itself seriously after that point.

Yeah, you're right; the game does reach into poignant territory and Jack does put on his game face post-split, I misspoke. I tend to forget though because I'm having too much fun in Radiata City (Human side FTW)

I was just thinking of my favorite RPG's from the past and realized that they usually have sci-fi elements or are really lighthearted and quirky. I'm thinking that SOMEONE will give me some money for X-mas, and I'm gonna take my happy ass down to Gamestop and pick up a few PS2 RPG's. At this point I'm thinking Persona 3, Dragon Quest VIII, and Digital Devil Saga. Used versions of course, so maybe I can find all three for a good price. Then again, I may end up missing out on some of these if they're rare and I have to resort to the internet to find them. If I have enough left over at the end of my game quest, I'll pick up The World Ends With You as it looks really awesome. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I've got much more time on my hands than I did before so getting into some RPG's shouldn't be hard at all. Unemployed and single is the perfect combo for these types of games.

Damn, I really am the only person who liked FF XIII.
I have been dissapointed with a couple of recent JRPGs, though. DQ IX I just didn't enjoy. It wasn't bad, just a bit boring. KH: Birrth By Sleep bored me, too. You've played one KH game, you've played them all.
I loved Valkyria Chronicles 2, though. They improved on everything from the original (except graphics, obviously).

Unemployed and single is the perfect combo for these types of games. Be forewarned, Digital Devil Saga is two separate games. You can get them new for about $30 each online, which is pretty close to what Gamestop charges used (I think). They're both really good and worth playing, and they're part of one larger narrative. The second one's end stage gets pretty weird though. I hear you on the single and unemployed thing - I'm in the same boat. Wish I wasn't though, but at least my love for RPGs keeps me occupied while I try to find work and such.

And M.O.P., what constitutes the "modern JRPG" to you? For me it's Final Fantasy VII and beyond, and I'd like to hear your opinion since there's a wellspring of great RPGs since then if you look for em. Current console generation. I've played a grand total of... two I liked (Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia) and many more I've disliked or just plain not interested in. Though I don't have a PS3, so I miss out on Valkyria Chronicles, which I have a feeling I'd like. DS and PSP have a lot more interesting games, though a lot of them are ports/remakes of older games like Lunar: Silver Star Harmony, Chrono Trigger DS, etc.

FFXII's one of my faves in the series, because of the ridiculous bevy of optional content the game provides you. I loooooooove me some mark-hunting on FFXII, and I've spent about a billion hours doing it. It's weird; I've really always hated MMOs for their laconic pace and how much sheer time it takes to do anything, and yet FFXII, which takes so much inspiration from them, has never once bored me. The sheer amount of optional content in FF XII and the way the game resembles an MMO is probably one (uh, two) of the reasons I'm not a huge fan. I prefer my JRPGs plot-driven, and since the plot (or moving it forward) isn't exactly FF XII's strongest point I've always found it a bit hard to get into the game. As an MMORPG-esque grindfest, FF XII is certainly not bad and even I can enjoy it when I look at it that way, but that sort of gameplay just isn't what I want from Final Fantasy. Then again, my favorite FF game is VIII and a cynical bastard such as myself isn't the target audience for these games, so it doesn't really matter what I want from Final Fantasy.

Picked up Persona 3 FES and Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abbadon at a local Gamestop last week (managed to get Fallout 3 as well thanks to Buy 2, Get 1 Free). I had to miss out on Digital Devil Summoner 2, but with Christmas coming up, might have enough money to get it.
Persona 3 FES is slightly tricky, mainly because I'm used to P4's battle mode instead. Raidou isn't that difficult, but I can thank demon negotiation for that. Definitely a fun alternative to having them as personas.
Are there any other MegaTen games for the PS2 that I could get?

Well, there's SMT: Nocturne if you can find it. It's really damn hard and there's not much of a plot, but at least you get to wander around post-apocalyptic Tokyo and fight (and hire) demons.

Started playing Hexyz Force in the PSP a few days ago. It's... pretty bland.
Well, aside from the Persona games, since I plan to get them anyway, any recommendations for JRPGS for the PSP?

Ys Seven Ys: The Oath in Felghana Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions (if you can deal with the slowdown during a lot of animations; the new translation is worth it IMO) Lunar: Silver Star Harmony Brave Story: The New Traveler Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII No, I don't work for XSEED. *accepts mysteriously pile of cash* >_>;
