I kind of have an idea...
Basically...have Ted Sr. come on and say he's yanking Ted Jr's belt *and* his allowance if he doesn't start winning again.
From there have him keep losing matches (albeit by the skin of his teeth, not the outright squash-jobs he's going through now, just to show that he's busting his ass) and at the same time start showing increasing signs of him being broke, wrestling in street clothes, disheveled look, that kinda thing. Maybe even short vignettes where he's looking for part-time work. Of course the tricky part here is for the announcers to play it for sympathy instead of cracking jokes, bickering, and putting themselves over but hey.
At this point pit him up against a particularly smug bastardy heel. Maybe someone like Swagger (or maybe Tyson Kidd if they ever decide to build him up again). At this point he's still losing, but this time via the heel's cheating and general underhandedness rather than through any fault of his own.
And then finally after a while of near-misses, he wins the big one, maybe even a title match. Cue an award ceremony where Ted Sr gives him the belt back. Ted Jr. promptly knocks the belt out of his hand, grabs a mic, and starts cutting a promo about how he's own man now, and doesn't need his dad's money or his title, an act that should hopefully turn him face in the process.
From there he goes to something similar to DDP's 'People's Champion' gimmick. How things go from there depends on how good of a job he's done getting the fans behind him.
And so there it is. Probably been suggested before, probably highly derivative, but it's better than the big pile of nothing he's got now.
