Straight-edge stuff aside, could Raven (back in his prime) been out in the roles Punk has been?
A cerebral wrestler that manipulates his gang of followers to do his bidding with 'cultish' overtures?
Sure they wrestle in different styles but I think it would have worked, plus Raven vs Austin, Foley etc would have ruled.

I think WWE just never really gets certain wrestlers, Raven was one of those guys.
They see the potential in the big powerhouse guys and comedy guys and the good old fashion good guy, but its these fringe gimmicks they never seem to understand. Oh granted there's people like Undertaker or Kane, but looking back I think it all comes down to who they like...which I know is wrong but some people are just gonna be left out.

I think it could have worked. Raven has always been really good in the mic, and at the time he was in the WWE, he was in good shape and could have held his own against the top guys back then without looking out of place.

Absolutely. Raven helped make CM Punk in ROH and in the indy scenes (yes Punk was having success in IWA:MS but it was his early stuff in RoH that made him a relatively well known name) and there is a clear similarity between the two in terms of character and style. Whilst Punk is more athletic in ring, they both have a strong focus on psychology and character in their ring work and in their promos. Whilst there are obvious differences, i.e. the whole Straight Edge thing, their heel characters have tons of similarities, especially when it comes to the cult deal.
If the stuff about Raven and Shane McMahon is true I can kind of understand why Vince didn't really want to push him. Put Punk is a modern version of Raven and is having the success that character could have had if WWF or WCW had really gotten behind him. Not 'the guy', but definitely the no.2 or even the no.1 heel.

Jimmy Jacobs is the modern version of Raven, but I see where the comparison comes from.

Punks Nexus has a very "Flock" vibe to them IMO.

There's certainly some similarities. If you check out some of the Sunday Night Heat episodes from 2002, Raven's promo work and overall shtick is eerily similar to what Punk's done in his heel run - even down to the little things like boasting possession of the show.
I think it's clear that it could've worked, they just didn't pull the trigger for a few of the aforementioned reasons. According to Raven himself the "Seven deadly sins" storyline actually went down well with Vince, and that was looking like his big break - but it was a matter of one or two writers getting in Vince's ear and dishing out some dirty laundry until the whole thing was pulled. It would have had its obvious differences, but a Punk-like character taking over Raw about eight years earlier would have been neat.

I'm not sure Raven was imposing enough. I know Punk isn't a hoss exactly, but Raven would need to lead a stable of mostly smaller guys than him to really pull it off I think.
Saying that, Austin, Rock etc. weren't THAT big, so he might've got away with it. It'd have to be booked to perfection, though.

Yes, definitely. But Vince always saw Raven as "Johnny Polo", and Pat Patterson didn't "get" his character or the way he dressed.

It would have been interesting to see where Matt Hardy's career would have gone if the 7 deadly sins storyline was carried out. The final match ass kicking at the hands of Hardy that Raven was pitching would have been something else.

Absolutely, yea. Very similar in tone and delivery, at least when Punk's a heel, and since he's at his best as a heel, then yeah, this comparison works perfectly.
