My song is in, and my fingers are crossed. Not exactly the best time for me to be in my first sing-off of the competition .

Glad to have got through, that was definitely one of the toughest categories of the game. Also delighted with my perfect score for the Janet Jackson song, I feel like I should go out and buy her whole discography or something to thank her haha.
Best of luck to the two in the sing-off!

From the guy who ranked Cyndi Lauper 4th out of 4: (Seriously, and she's even one of the artists I nominated for the Finals sing-off one season) Remix 'EmDonna Summer- I Feel Love (Patrick Cowley Mega Mix) www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSTf0B-9laQLove the original, and like the remix. Two positives can’t make a negative, right? Let’s hope we still feel that way 15 minutes later. Totally felt like several minutes of filler here and there. I’m not at a rave, and even if I were, I know of several head-nodding, psycho-inspiring, monotonous beats. But, at the same time, there are plusses in this remix. Howeve, there are also a few slots where monotony becomes a little much. I’m all for the mind-numbing techno insanity. Just not *always* feeling this one. Philip Steir ft. Steppenwolf- Magic Carpet Ride www.youtube.com/watch?v=85qr_W4AGEEMy first reaction when I saw this was, “Whaaat?! This has potential!” And well, yeah, it far surpassed potential. This is some killer stuff! This should be on DJ Hero! (It may be already, I dunno.) But yes, this was AWESOME! Also, this is from the movie GO?! I’ve seen that movie plenty of times and I LOVE IT! I didn’t really even recognize it as being from the movie (what in the world is wrong with me?!), but then again, it’s been a couple of years since I’ve seen it. “Magic Carpet Ride” AND GO?! Too much rule in that! Eliza Doolittle- Money Box (Jamie xx Remix) www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f8aSFHtTMMCatchy! I dig it! I could listen to this multiple times. And I probably will now that I’m hearing it for the first time. (Post-rankings comment: it's just so unlucky that the two songs above it were just chosen this round--great set of three songs right there!) Depeche Mode- Never Let Me Down Again (Split Mix) www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ng9zziTJXEI know I used the word “rules” with another song earlier, but seriously, this song rules. 1. Philip Steir ft. Steppenwolf- Magic Carpet Ride 2. Depeche Mode- Never Let Me Down Again (Split Mix) 3. Eliza Doolittle- Money Box (Jamie xx Remix) 4. Donna Summer- I Feel Love (Patrick Cowley Mega Mix) Ensemble ChoreographyA Chorus Line- One www.youtube.com/watch?v=XelEnue5hbkOk, that was seriously great. Didn’t expect Chorus Line, but that’s what we got and a big thanks for that. Angel Taylor- Like You Do www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKN-2YEYb-4A good upbeat track and it’s easy on the ears for sure. It’s maybe a little bit lightweight here in the final four, however, and may risk getting lost in the shuffle if other picks are stellar standout picks. BoA- Energetic www.youtube.com/watch?v=qE05Bv1e_foAs a choreographed ensemble, this is amazing. She has terrific charisma and even draws my eyes toward her over the full ensemble. The song itself is a little bit lacking for me, but it grows on me each time I hear it (ended up playing through it a 3rd time). Definitely one that falls into that “mood piece” category for me. Like the previous pick, I think timing with this song really governs how I react to it. It is a good choice though for the round. Janet Jackson- Rhythm Nation www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAwaNWGLM0cYeah yeah, I know it’s a classic and a go-to kinda pick, buuut I – LOVE – THIS – VIDEO – AND – SONG! And my goodness, we haven’t even heard from Janet in the game since Season 1, I don’t believe. Winner (not just for this category, but probably for the entire round). In fact, during the process of selecting categories for the round, I’m pretty sure that this exact video was what I had in mind when choreographed ensemble was floating around discussion. 1. Janet Jackson- Rhythm Nation 2. BoA- Energetic 3. A Chorus Line- One 4. Angel Taylor- Like You Do A CapellaThe Blanks- Superman www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1GPTCbAtHUDefinitely better than the original. Oh wait, I don’t like 3 Doors Down anyway. And also, it took me a full minute to realize, “Wait! That’s Ted!” I love the Scrubs reference there. It all comes so clear to me now that I know what you did there. Haha! I love this in its own little way. Cyndi Lauper- Fearless www.youtube.com/watch?v=zf1ySye4Y5gOne of my favorite unique voices in all of music. With that said, I felt this didn’t necessarily offer anything hair-raising. Perhaps that’s the curse of my having heard so many Lauper songs and performances anyway. It’s DEFINITELY an appealing song choice and performance to me. There’s no knocking that. But in terms of a capella standards, it just seems to be what it is: a delicate well done performance, pretty straight-forward and a little bit repetitive (although on the flipside, that DOES demonstrate some flat out amazing control on her part). The Ohio University Leading Tones- Brick www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLFfmoPEPcILove this song, and love that it didn’t come across as *too* glee club tacky. This could’ve been a wreck, but this song just holds up no matter what people do to it (so long as it’s not just an off-key butchering of it). Yeah, this works just fine for me. I was hoping for none of that Sing-Off knockoff stuff in the round, but this definitely works for me in a big way. Didn’t know this existed—good music prowess there on your part! Beyonce- Best Thing I Never Had www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhWkrqUnUiUSimply put, this girl’s got pipes. Also, totally unfair that you used this music video for the backup to this song. Hitting judge weak spots with that! I didn’t expect this pick, but I totally enjoyed hearing it pop up. Nicely nicely put together. 1. The Ohio University Leading Tones- Brick 2. Beyonce- Best Thing I Never Had 3. The Blanks- Superman 4. Cyndi Lauper- Fearless -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, and one other thing. I lol'ed so hard at how this came across (reading the last line, imagining it said as dry and unenthused as possible): Four people. One dream. The quarterfinals of FAN Idol. Let's get to the results.

"I Feel Love" Felt like the song wanted to take me on a journey, but each time it got out of the driveway, it had to go back home because it forgot something.
"Magic Carpet Ride" I don't know how much this mix really adds to the original, but I've got a soft spot for this remix.
"Money Box" The beat is really jarring in a really good way. I'm liking this.
"Never Let Me Down Again" I liked the epicness of the intro, but I got a lot of the same feeling that I did from 'I Feel Love.'
Money Box Magic Carpet Ride Never Let Me Down Again I Feel Love
-----
"I Hope I Get It"/"One" Can't argue with that iconic kick line. Oh, excuse me: DAT ICONIC KICK LINE.
"Like You Do" Have you ever wondered what Colbie Callait would be like if she were black? Well, you have your answer. Nice piece of pop music, and great use of
"Energetic" The song's okay, but I think I would've rewarded you had you taken a risk and gone with some actual K-Pop. BoA has learned what other Southeast-Asian-pop acts coming to the US market have learned: You never go full Utada.
"Rhythm Nation" Say what you will about her or her family, but Janet made great pop music. This is Exhibit A.
Rhythm Nation Like You Do I Hope I Get It/One Energetic
-----
"Superman" This didn't wow me out of the gate, but it was pretty good.
"Fearless" This DID wow me out of the gate. Cyndi can sing.
"Brick" Me likey.
"Best Thing I Never Had" I'm a little torn because it's not really an acapella performance (someone just edited out the music), but the girl can flat out sing.

Well, the time has come and passed. Finishing in 4th on FAN Idol VI due to non-participation is: {Spoiler}smokinvokoun. vokoun, it has been a pleasure to judge your songs, but you did not give me a Sing Off song for this round. For that reason, you're gone. Top 3 theme (or lack thereof) coming once I update the song list on the front page!

Now for the Top 3 category: THREE STYLE! Much like the opening category at the beginning, you will be picking songs of your own choice. For this category, you will choose three of them and send them in to me. Then, I'll bunch them together and send them off to the judges to determine who is in the finals and who will be in the last Sing Off. So, get to it!

While we're waiting, we have a FAN Idol announcement. (I will probably repost this in the new thread when the Final 2 are set so that previous competitors can see this.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, here's the plan. The FAN Idol loyalists have been at it for 6 full and exciting seasons, and we've also had a large number of one- or two-season participants. This is an announcement of the new FAN Idol "spin-off" that is designed to give FAN Idol participants the chance to cool off and for the original game concept to rejuvenate itself.
No one likes getting eliminated and all that, I know. We've gone through a long stretch of FAN Idol competitions for a long time now, and we hope this will give everyone a chance to try something a little different and also bring in more players that normally wouldn't play.
Introducing ...
With Season 6 of FAN Idol coming to a close, the proposal is to help give this game a brief hiatus for a couple of months to let the newness build back up and the tensions to subside.
What we've been doing is a music-specific set of themes and topics. Now in Season 6, when this one comes to a close, the spinoff (Scavenger: World Series of Pop Culture) will open the doors for a full-on onslaught of pop culture fandom while Fan Idol enthusiasts have a chance to renew themselves and get revved up for Season VII beginning in the spring after this installment concludes.
I have scoured off-topic and looked at people who are well-rounded to potentially be a judge. Locked in so far are MGH and irontyger. Welcome aboard to those two! Also, we are introducing a co-host system which will also help when the busy-ness of keeping up with the game can take its toll on just one person. CageKing had shown interest in this earlier in the thread, so Cageking will be host as well. More details on how that will be done a little later.
The game will feature round-by-round themes in which contestants find their own preferential choices that fit the theme and then the panel of judges ranks each pick in each round. Eliminations ensue until there is only one winner.
An example of a round's "theme" could be something like, "Monumental Kiss." The contestants would find their best example of this in any realm of pop culture (TV, Movie, Sports, Music Video, internet meme, whatever) and they send Cageking and me--the hosts--the video links. Like in this game, I (or he) will anonymously send the clips minus the competitors' names to the panel of judges and so on and so forth.
We're going to feed contestants themes in the realm of sports, music, movies, tv, general pop culture, technology, etc., and some themes don't have to be medium-specific; that is, they could come from any realm of pop culture. Then, on the flipside, we could have something like "Great Sports Broadcast Moments" and that, of course, would be something pop culture medium-specific (in this case, sports, obviously).
Again, this gives the original game a cool-down period and give people the chance to come back strong in late March or early April when the SCAVENGER game probably will come to an end.
We hope to see you following the Fan Idol Season VI finale!

Songs are in. Let me tell you, it's pretty damn difficult trying to decide on which song you want to use by your favorite singer (female) on the planet.
I absolutely love all three of my songs no matter what happens. I'm just glad I got a chance to use them.
Good luck to Junkenstein and SRVS.

Update: I'm sorry, guys. Didn't realize I had my full complement of judges 4 days ago. Anyway, I have the votes and they are tallied. Here are the results for the semi-finals on FAN Idol. This round was all about free style... and I don't mean of the rap variety. Each contestant was to choose 3 songs whose artists haven't been used yet in competition. I'm not going to keep you guessing or anything since it's taken me so long to be so stupid. The person in the Finals of FAN Idol is: {Spoiler}Junkenstein, who scored 79 points! Now, Junkenstein didn't score the top song of the round; hell, his best song was 3rd of 9. However, he maintained consistency, getting 3rd, 4th, and 6th place in the round (Up, Up, and Away, 31 points; The Perfect Drug, 25 points; Northern Sky; 23 points) to grant him his place in the Finals. As for the other two... {Spoiler}J finished in second, with 77 points. J had a higher scoring song than Junkenstein, but was just edged in the other two songs (Don't Take Me Back, 32 points; Procreation Chick, 23 points; Teenage Wristband, 22 points) to put him in the Sing Off.
Sudden Rush finished in third, with 69 points. Rush had the top song on the round, but also had the two lowest scoring songs (Read My Mind, 33 points; Scar, 19 points; L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N., 17 points) to put him in the Sing Off as well. Here is the spreadsheet for the round: {Spoiler}

It was tough to think of a 'gimmick' for these songs since my source for a lot of the random factoids I use is down today in protest of SOPA, so thank goodness for my girlfriend. GF's comment: "They're gonna think I'm a b****."
Scar It's... inoffensively milquetoastishly okay. Doesn't move me one way or the other. GF's comment: "It just wasn't memorable."
Northern Sky This isn't up my alley either. The melody is really nice, but it just didn't strike a chord with me. GF's comment: "This kinda reminds me of 'Pumped Up Kicks' because I can't understand s***."
Procreation Chick First off, I'm all for chicks in favor of procreation. Second, I'm all for songs with some funk in them, and this one's got some funk. Does the actual song cut off like this though? GF's comment: "This sounds like something they'd play over the end credits of a movie."
Read My Mind (Live at Abbey Road) I like The Killers. I like this song. I like that seaweed shirt. I like the fact that the drummer jizzed his pants at 3:42. Everything about this pick was enjoyable. GF's comment: "It sounds like a person... sang that song who can't sing and uploaded it to YouTube."
Don't Take Me Back That voice grabbed my attention right away, like Madonna and Gaga had a baby whose favorite thing to do when she grew up was sit down on a stool with a guitar and just sing her heart out. NICE pick. GF's comment: "That song was perfectly timed with my memory book of sadness and old broken friendships." *sobs*
The Perfect Drug When it comes to this song, I have SC/TCBS (Sweet Caroline -slash- Taking Care of Business Syndrome) - I want to hear the chorus of this song and nothing else. GF's comment: None, as she ran off to the bedroom because of the last song.
Teenage Wristband I was half-expecting Twilight cosplayers singing about Breaking Dawn in barbershop style, but I digress. It was okay. Had a nice 'end of the journey' feeling. GF's comment: None, as she's now at the computer waiting for her old friend to message her on Facebook.
L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. This is like the fifth song in this round that wouldn't sound out of place on the soundtrack for a random Diablo Cody movie. At least the guy can spell. GF's comment: *sad moan*
Up, Up And Away Nas, you were wrong. Between Cudi, Kanye and Lupe, hip hip is far from dead. GF's comment: "Stop asking me, I don't care anymore."
Siobahn Donaghy - Don't Take Me Back Kid Cudi - Up, Up And Away Splashdown - Procreation Chick The Killers - Read My Mind (Live at Abbey Road) The Twilight Singers - Teenage Wristband Noah and the Whale - Life Goes On Nine Inch Nails - The Perfect Drug Missy Higgins - Scar Nick Drake - Northern Sky
Closing word: I think what worked against half the song is that half of them seemed cut from the same cloth. Even though they were different, they felt different for the same reason... if that makes any sense. GF's comment: *Goes to YouTube and plays Jon LaJoie's "F*** Everything"*
I should probably go and say something to her.

Closing word: I think what worked against half the song is that half of them seemed cut from the same cloth. Even though they were different, they felt different for the same reason... if that makes any sense. This is why the guy is so good at doing this and should be booked any chance he has to judge. He nailed it with that observation. He's keen ... and I don't mean peachy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here you go with some comments for the round: Missy Higgins- Scar www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKn7XAMNV-gLiiike it. This is a good artist to pick and props on uncorking a good one yet to be used in the competition in any season thus far. That’s the kinda out-of-the-gate pick that does what it takes to carry you through to the finale. Nick Drake- Northern Sky www.youtube.com/watch?v=y11X5WljnFAOooh, another cool niche pick. I actually first paid attention to this guy after buying the Garden State soundtrack. His sound is so unique, I think. This song isn’t my favorite of his, but there’s no doubt that it serves its purpose of giving us some Nick Drake flavor. I can TOTALLY see where this song would set in well as a personal favorite and supersede the influence of any competition or votes from said competition. Thanks for the bringing it to the table and sharing it with us. That’s what it’s all about. Splashdown- Procreation Chick www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZSe5RZ6M-wI love that we’re continuing the theme of unused artists. I totally dig this track. I love all the musical influences that bobble up and down throughout the song. What a unique pick in that regard! Creativity points for you! The Killers- Read My Mind (Live at Abbey Road) www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzUzEGIKjSQ*melts* What a great band! They just kinda keep growing on me. I was a latecomer to The Killers craze, but the first listens I gave them made them immediate winners with me. Cool version of the song here too. I’ve yet to hear a bad song from this band. Just radiates awesomeness; it’s not able to be summarized with an accurate description of how it all works, it just does. Siobhan Donaghy- Don't Take Me Back www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cYp8ejhCjcMusic education! Here’s one I’m not familiar with. Had to look her up, and now realize she’s one of the Sugababes. Didn’t expect that. Wow, a solid enough track and an artist I’m going to have to listen to more. I kinda wish I liked it a little more, as I feel it’s a good track, but I’m just not feeling it like I do the previous picks. It’s not due to the lack of familiarity; it just doesn’t hit me with that punch the others give me. Nine Inch Nails- The Perfect Drug www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3WxYSltHGcDoes this rule?! Umm, you bet it rules! I’m 100 percent behind this pick. No reason to rant and rave about it. I’d rather just hush and let this track rip my brain to shreds the way so many other Nine Inch Nails songs do . . . and I WELCOME IT! The Twilight Singers- Teenage Wristband www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EbF1L7D2BYSort of an unfortunately named band these days, isn’t it? I love Afghan Whigs. I try my best to resist my bit of regret that Twilight Singers are not Afghan Whigs, but there’s no denying that this band carves a notch right in my musical tree, and I love the unexpectedness of this pick. I can totally get behind this original flavor! This is a song that goes immediately into my playlist. Noah and the Whale- L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N (Live at Rak Studios) www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE4-5kDHFUELacks a little punch for my own tastes. I’m familiar with the band, but this is slightly lightweight for the round. Also, I find the whole spelling thing too gimmicky. It’s been done too many times already, and I don’t really get the purpose for it in this song except to execute a lazy rhyme. Kid Cudi- Up, Up, and Away www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRPpLGxGNZYBroken record over here, but it’s another one I like. It’s a different flavor than ANY of the picks thus far and that is going to help its cause. I’ll have to give everything a second or third run-through, that’s for sure. Well done with this choice! 1. The Killers- Read My Mind 2. Nine Inch Nails- The Perfect Drug 3. The Twilight Singers- Teenage Wristband 4. Splashdown- Procreation Chick 5. Kid Cudi- Up, Up, and Away 6. Missy Higgins- Scar 7. Nick Drake- Northern Sky 8. Siobhan Donaghy- Don't Take Me Back 9. Noah and the Whale- L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N

Song is in. I've certainly got my work cut out for me against a former champ.
Trying to quote things from my phone is a pain so I'll do it this way.
@tbk: Yeah I noticed too late that the end of "Procreation Chick" cut out like that that. The actual song doesn't fade out like that, whoever uploaded out just faded out the end for some strange reason.
@pegasus: "Don't Take Me Back". This one was hard for me. I literally love every song she's ever done, so just picking one was rough. For me her two albums are about as close to perfect, that a Pop album can get. This track is just a B-Side.

Alright. Here are the results for the Sing Off. Sudden Rush, you chose Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. J, you chose Just by Radiohead. By a score of 2-1, the person joining Junkenstein the FAN Idol Finals is: {Spoiler}Sudden Rush. Congratulations to you making to the Finals.
J, unfortunately, this means a very sad farewell. You did quite well to come this far, and you should feel proud to have ended this season on the podium. The Finals Categories will be revealed in my next post!
