I was reading through the thread about Smarks in the WWE Current forum, and I got to thinking about something. Do hardcore MMA fans have the same schizophrenic mentalities a lot of fans have to their product that we wrestling fans have? I feel like there's a lot of self-loathing on the internet towards smarks and the so-called IWC, and towards people who embrace the current product. Naturally, most sports have fans like that, but it seems stronger amongst wrestling fans. Now, I don't follow MMA, or like it much, but I've always been curious if online MMA fans have the same kind of tendencies about stuff like this, the general nature of the business, or is it more divided along the lines of fighters people love or hate? And if not, do you think people might come out like that if MMA's business starts to go down in the future?

MMA fans seem to judge each other more on whether or not they are a "real" mma fan based on when they started watching... If you have only been watching since the UFC has been super popular you are looked down on by some of the guys who have been following the Japanese stuff, and the Brazilian Vale Tudo stuff for a million years.
This isn't all fans mind you, not everyone who has followed it for a long time resents all of the new fans or anything, but you know how internet tough guys work...

I've heard it said that if you call the Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonner fight your "favorite" people will almost unanimously look down their nose at you as either a bandwagon fan, or someone who doesn't know a good fight when they see it.

And the guys who only like the knockouts are constantly fighting back and forth with the guys who appreciate the ground game... Anyone who says anything positive about the UFC heavyweights will be called a Dana White nuthugger by anyone who watched Pride, who in turn are called Fedor Fanboys... The moral of the story is that arguing on the internet is like the Special Olympics...

ARGH! I don't and I'm a huge MMA fan. Was it the greatest fight ever, no. Was it wildly entertaining and would people want to come to the sport after seeing that? YES! That's why some folks need to get their heads out of their collective asses. Not everything needs to be a grapple fest to be great, the casual fan wants to see finishes and slugfests. Confession, my favorite fight in the past 18 months was the fight between Jung and Garcia in the WEC, not anything close to a technical classic, but highly entertaining. The other problem I have with MMA fans is the tough guy image people have. Wear the shirts, talk about your wrestling days in high school and rag on people who just don't get it? f*** YOU GUYS! It's assclowns like you who want to try to make the sport more elitist that kill it at the casual level.

It's hard to compare, since one is a legit sport, and the other is a worked one. A lot of the IWC thing comes from wanting bigger pushes for guys who are better "wrestlers". In MMA, you make your own push by kicking the other guys ass. String a few good wins together, and you get a title shot.

It's all about profitability and if a good fighter is stringing wins together with a large fanbase, more people will want to see him get the shot over a fighter with a small fanbase. Think a Yushin Okami in 2006-07 situation, the guy won 4 fights in the octagon and by all accounts should have gotten a fight against Anderson Silva, after all he was the last guy to beat him. Instead he had to fight Franklin to get that shot because Rich was more marketable and more money could be made from a Silva/Franklin rematch than a Okami/Silva fight.

It's assclowns like you who want to try to make the sport more elitist that kill it at the casual level. SOOOOO.....SO many of those type of guys around where I live. They wear the TAPOUT gear and ALL of them...every last one I have had the misfortune of speaking to...ALL of them believe they're more badass than ANY UFC fighter you could name. They all have their favorites, and they all, like wrestling fans, have the performers they hate. But rarely have I ever heard a pro wrestling fan rant and rave for five minutes about how they could whip Batista's ass....or kick in John Cena's head. I've had that pulled on me quite a few times, mainly if I mention either Fedor, Brock Lesnar, or Anderson Silva. Bear in mind, most of the guys I've spoken to make Roy Nelson look like Cody Rhodes. So yeah. Forgive me if I have a narrow image of the douchebags that wear that gear around here. Its weird, but you...you approach these guys as a fellow FAN of MMA, and they treat you with scorn and contempt if your favorite fighter is not THEIR favorite fighter. And they're serious about it, is the thing. Wrestling fans....we'll give each other s*** about liking a certain wrestler, but I don't see it to the extent that the UFC/MMA crowd takes their love/hate of certain wrestlers. Then again, when it comes to WOMEN'S wrestlers....it's a totally different story. ;D

A lot of it is simply the medium and not the content.
.... I am not sure what I just said, actually. I just think people believe that being negative on the internet makes them badass in real life.

Same.
The worst of the IWC will act like they know it all, disrespect the talent, think they know more than the promoters, and never be happy no matter what.
The worst of the MMA online community or keyboard warriors as they say are the just as bad. They'll scrutinize and criticize every aspect of the show, they "lose respect" for fighters, credit never goes to the winner of the fight, only discredit to the loser. Every fighter is only as good as their last fight. They also act like they know more than the promoters as well.
I'm a much bigger MMA fan than i am a wrestling fan but the disrespect towards those who participate in the sport is worse on most major MMA forums than i see on most wrestling forums i go on.

Too many posters try to get terrible jokes over as some sort of internet meme, like Kanefused etc. It wasn't funny the first time and it wasn't funny the 1,000,000th time someone said it.

Based on personal experience, MMA fans can be broken down into several groups.
BJJ Nerd:
Replaces the original Karate Kids. He has taken 3 free classes of Jiu Jitsu and now feels that he knows more about MMA than you, and as a result, thinks that youre an uneducated gorilla for not liking fights that just involve stalling and nothing else because you arent intelligent enough to appreciate the intricacies of the ground game. Actively cheers against strikers saying that strikers are for the dumber fans who like brawling.
TUF Noob:
Named after the new wave of fans that the original The Ultimate Fighter series, these are the types that buy into every absurdly designed Affliction-knock off, as well as having TapouT merchandise coming out their ass. They think that Jiu Jitsu is for gays, anyone who likes Brock Lesnar is a WWE fan and therefore should go back to watching "that fake pussy crap", and their favourite fighter is Anderson Silva because Dana White says he is the best in the world.
The BJ Penn Fan:
BJ Penn has never lost a fight without a valid reason. He was screwed in the first Edgar fight, he was depressed and unmotivated in the rematch and would beat Edgar in a third math, GSP greased the 2nd time, BJ got screwed by the judges in the first GSP match, and he had a broken rib in the 2nd Matt Hughes fight. And he is a top ten Welterweight with a record of 2-3 at Welterweight.
The Historian:
Everything was better in PRIDE. MMA has passed its golden age. Heavyweights are garbage compared to 2004. I was at UFC 1, front and center, and I caught one of Teila Tuli's teeth. Ive been following MMA since Gracie fought Kimura.
The Bandwagoner.
Pre-fight: Fighter X is totally overrated. Hasnt fought anyone at all. How could anyone like this guy?
Post fight: Fighter X is the best ever!!! He will walk all over the champion!!!!

Hasnt fought anyone at all. How could anyone like this guy? Post fight: Fighter X is the best ever!!! He will walk all over the champion!!!! Excellent list, especially the Penn fans, that was hilarious. Also don't forget about the hero and the fighter... The hero is always complaining about how unfair it is that the lower card guys don't make enough money, Dana White (who is Satan by the way) makes too much money and should be providing health insurance for everyone who ever wrestled in high school. Also PPV's cost too much for the average fan, so the UFC had better stop putting all of these shitty no name fighters on tv or I won't watch anymore... Just don't point out that the fighters they won't pay to watch are the same guys that they were just bitching about not making enough money, otherwise you are on Dana's nuts. The Fighter either trains at an MMA gym, walks by an MMA gym on the way to school, or heard there might be an MMA gym opening in their town soon. For the purposes of talking on the internet they are the same thing anyways... The fighter likes to say things like "I trained with that guy he's cool.". This person also likes to bring up this training to add weight to unrelated comments. In the mind of the fighter you aren't allowed to comment about someone if you couldn't beat them up.

Ah yes, the fighter. How could I forget him?
"All you guys criticising Fighter X clearly need to get off your fat asses and go train. Clearly you know nothing about the sport, and have no respect for the sport (MMA is always referred to as "the sport") "
I came across a real life one of these guys on an MMA forum, he said he felt disrespected by a Taekwondo student who started at the same BJJ school as him in his TKD uni with TKD black belt. I was laughing my ass off.
Listening to people talk about "warrior spirit" is always fun as well.

I'm possibly the most casual MMA fan in existence. My favorite fight to date is Fedor vs. Rogers, and yes, that was my first Fedor fight.
But I think I can still say with complete conviction that Kimbo Slice was simultaneously a scrub and past whatever prime he already had.

How is that even possible? That is just ridiculous. That fight was one of the best I've ever seen in UFC. It was better than any of Brock Lesnar's fights.
