I tell them it's like watching Friday Night Lights, or any other show about sports. WWE airs shows ABOUT the people in these 'wrestling leagues' called RAW and Smackdown. It's just like watching a movie like "The Mighty Ducks". That wasn't a REAL hockey game they played, but not knowing whats going to happen next brings the suspense, and it's fun. Admiring the creativity on the screen, the athleticism, and the pretty darn good acting (considering most of the programming is live television, or at least done in front of a live audience), is totally ok, as is being a fan of your favourite performers. Sure no one is supposed to get hurt, but it happens more often than you would think, and there's no offseason. Not fer nothin, but this ain't ballet, Cole! Woah sorry I don't know what came over me

especially, to ufc fans i just say "when ufc can fill an arena faster than wrestlemania with as many ppl, then ill give what you think the time of day" Hardly a fair retort. UFC hasnt had the popularity boom that wrestling had in the 80's, nor has it had the longevity of the WWF/E. As someone who prefers MMA to pro wrestling, I just tend to disregard about a large majority of "MMA fans" for their opinion on pro wrestling just as much as I disregard them for their opinion on MMA. Go on MMA boards around the net, and see why. When you see a 15 year old kid who listens to Hollywood Undead and wears TapouT clothing questioning Georges St Pierres "warrior spirit" because he hasnt finished a fight recently, then his opinion on pro wrestling is hardly worth dignifying.

I try using logic.
A co-worker watched wrestling for the first time. He seen Jeff Hardy jumped over a ladder and leg drop Edge on an ending of Smackdown. He talked about the spot and says, "Thats fake right? And I said, "What?". He then said, "Thats fake. The Guy on the ground didn't look like he's in pain". That annoyed me because he completely ignored the twist of fate on the ladder before the move. Instead of answering his question, I BECOME THE ONE who asked the questions and the main one that shut him up was, "Have you ever jumped over a fifteen foot ladder and land on your ass on top of someone??? You would think that would hurt both of them, right???". He didn't know how to respond so he just said "Oh" and walk away.
Aside from that, I just tell people to watch Japan or CZW.

When someone says "Wrestling's fake. Why do you watch that crap." I always say "So is every other show on TV." This is my standard response. It's like asking someone why they watch "The Office". "You know those characters don't actually exist, right?"

I normally just say, "You're telling me this as if everybody doesn't already know." and just generally try to make them feel stupid for it. What's funny is that these people always bring up the mythical "that one person they met once" who totally believes wrestling is real. People LOVE to make up stories of all these people they've met who supposedly believe it. Amazing that with all the wrestling shows I've been to and all the fans I've encountered, I've met less people who believe it than some of these non-fans. I actually used to know a fellow who believed it was real, he wasn't really all that bright though but he was a really nice guy so I would just act like a mark too whenever he was around.

too many people are emotionally invested in sports. a game of chance that they have no control over and foolishly live vicariously through (my opinion)
some people might do the same for wrestling
but wrestling is different, because it's a live-action drama about human conflict. so, to me i'd rather suspend my disbelief for a couple hours each week watching that, than be miserable half the time when my favorite sports team didn't perform well enough to achieve something for me

I used to go on a tangent about my injuries and such. But now I just don't care.
for those who don't believe, no explanation is good enough for those who do believe, no explanation is necessary.
there's no point in trying to convince others.

I sit down when they are watching anything and point out where it's clearly fake. Repeatedly. For the whole show.
Usually results in someone eventually pausing it and just going SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP

I got into an argument recently with someone about this. I said, "Movies are fake too, you like them?" And the person responded with, "Not the movies I watch." I've noticed that the people who make this claim are usually really stupid.

I challenge anyone who says its fake to a fight, wrasslin' style. I fake a punch and then take a bump and, while standing up, I blade and start talking like Dusty Rhodes. That usually ends it right there.
