I know we've talked about this before, but its a topic that never seems to die. Anyway, I just heard it again today in one of my classrooms when we were talking about the XFL of all things. Anyways, someone piped up, "Yeah it was owned by the guy who does the wrestling. You know the fake wrestling." I was tempted to pipe up too, but since even the topic of the XFL was barely on the radar in the class discussions I felt I had to let it pass.
How have you responded? Has anyone ever gone Edge on someone? I wish I could find the video (its no WWE copyrighted), but when he owned that one news woman was great. For people who don't know the conversation went something like this (not exact):
News Woman: We all know wrestling is fake, but how does it feel to perform at Tribute to the Troops and make a real connection with these soldiers.
Edge: Actually, I was out for last year's Tribute to the Troops because I had a broken neck from wrestling in this fake sport.

Wrestling is real. All that nfl, nba, mma crap is fake as hell.
honestly, I hate it when people call out wrestling for being theatrically, fake. yes, storylines are fake, but explain the pain and blood, " huh dur, they wrestle on a mattress dur they put ketchup on their face"

When someone says "Wrestling's fake. Why do you watch that crap."
I always say "So is every other show on TV."

Someone recently told me that they were all safe, because they knew how to fall off a ladder.
I responded that she was absolutely right; they know how to safely fall off a ladder. Landing, though. Landing is a different story.

I've actually had someone try and tell me they use... get this -- STRINGS! That they don't even touch the mat or eachother, like a puppet almost, and then they edit out the strings on the computer before they put it on TV. I didn't even know what to say, I was literally dumbfounded, I ended up telling her something like, "You might be right, can you look it up for us and then tell me if it's true." Needless to say, she never got back to me.

I can understand someone calling it "fake wrestling" to make it clear as to what it is when talking to someone misinformed who mixes up wrestling, amateur wrestling, boxing and mma (believe me, these people exist), but as a derogatory insult, like saying "wrestling sucks and it's stupid because it's fake", I have a problem.
Are movies, theatre plays and circuses fake? They're choreographed, athletic and dramatic shows that you enjoy for what they are, why do you need to point out that the fights are fixed? Preplanning it makes it a good show. And it's so hard on the body, these guys are hurting themselves day in and day out even though it's fixed. There's a lot of stupid stuff going around in wrestling, but as a whole, you have no choice but to respect the business and what the guys put themselves through for your enjoyment.
Unlike any actual pro fighters, they don't have months to heal up and train between fights.

I believe the strong 'it's fake' opinion of the general public is a continued reaction to the uncompromising, fierce protection of kayfabe that the industry had in the past.
Since wrestling would never admit for many years that it was predetermined, naturally the public would feel deceived and lied to. People don't like being lied to, so many hated wrestling for 'being fake.' Regardless of how real the violent stunts are.
I believe it'll go away in a couple generations.

Wrestling on a mattress and using ketchup? The oldest cliches I've ever heard. It's not easy to walk on a mattress/trampoline. Second, blood capsules or ketchup capsules, they actually believe that people stick some on their skin and it's scripted where they'll be hit.

I love how wrestling is right up there with politics as a subject the dumb masses talk about as if they're experts, spewing ridiculously stupid fallacies which somehow they believe to be real.
Similar to the armchair football fan who doesn't know any of the players of the team he 'supports'.
