For example, in WCW, the NWO, as a whole, was the face of the company. Even though they got some face reactions, they were the "bad guys".
My question is, WWE always puts their money on building around a babyface. Would Vince ever give the ball to a heel, making them the top star? Maybe it could be built as the "dark days" of the WWE, where the company is ruled by evil forces. A lot of the imagery is black and dark. Faces like Orton become tweeners, never siding with one. Eventually, when Vince (or whoever is in charge) sees a face with potential, the dark ages are ended and a new era begins.
Actually, I really think this could work with Cena. Any thoughts?

The NWO is a good example of why you shouldn't do that as is the infamous Triple H Reign of terror back in 2003. Heels only draw money because most people pay to see a babyface beat them up. By themselves you've got a whole lot of nothing.

In 2003 RAW was basically the Triple H show. They were the literal dark days. True, but Brock Lesnar was still a small margin of hope on Smackdown. Also, Goldberg did some damage to Triple H. |

No, because heels in current WWE aren't designed to draw money. Not on their own anyway.

How about Shawn Michaels in the New WWF Generation Era (1994-1995)?
He didn't become a full-fledged face as the Heartbreak Kid until late 1995- and he was a huge building block for the company.

Doubtful. WWE is all about sending the crowd home happy, which means that a face will always be the center of attention.

The closest I can think of is Brock Lesnar. HE was really marketed when he was around.

I've thought about this often and here's what I have come up with: It is impossible to build around a top heel in the long term, at least nationally. A heel is by definition someone the fans want to see get beat up and lose. However, a truly top guy is someone who doesn't lose all that often, or if he does the fans want to see him get payback.
The NWA and later WCW tried booking around heels on a national level and all it does is produce a bunch of idiotic booking designed to somehow keep the faces strong while keeping the heels on top. It doesn't work. Actually at least the NWA of the 80s tried to keep the faces strong....Bischoff had no qualms about wrecking his top faces in the mid to late 90s.

It'd be really hard to do. The best kind of heel to do it would be a really charismatic one who kills people in the ring, but eventually people would cheer him and he'd get turned. So...I don't know.

Nope, nope and nope. The champions with the longest reigns (Sammartino, Hogan) have been faces and the company will always be built around a face. No major company in the US has ever been built around a heel champion; even when the NWO was the top dog in WCW they were tweeners who got face pops from a sizeable chunk of the audience.
