The thing I despised about Raw last night was the seemingly millions (and millions) of references to sports teams. I don't live in America and I don't watch any American sports nor do most people outside the States so all the references are completely lost on us. Last night seemingly every segment the Rock was involved in had him talking about playing for the Miami whatevers and Cole trying to get heel heat by wearing the shirt of a rival team. It alienates any viewers outside America who don't give a flying f*** about American sports and even Americans who *gasp* don't actually watch sports.
Even that video tribute for him seemed to have as much american football footage as WWE footage.
I can live with it if it's just a throwaway mention but so many heels rely on it to get heel heat and last night Rock mentioned his 'football' or basketball teams over and over and over and even doing some stupid hand signal about it throughout the show. Stop going on about sports. It's bloody annoying.
Sorry I just had to rant.

Not exactly my favorite thing for them to do either, but since WWE is an American company, they'll keep doing it anyway.

It's not stupid because us non-Americans don't care, it's stupid because, surely, the 98% of the viewing audience that don't support the Miami Whatsits or the Opponents of the Miami Whatsits don't care about these shirt-wearing shenanigans.
But it generates noise in the arena on the night, I suppose.

It's a great way to get a cheap pop or cheap heat; it always works. I just don't think they're going to stop doing it. When I watch English TV, I don't always know what they're talking about, either.

Well it is an American show so things like that will happen from time to time. I'm not saying I care at all about the Miami Hurricanes. I'm just sayin'.
Plus if you don't understand something, I think there's a few Americans on the board who can help.

Im fairly sure the hang gesture was an imitation of the University of Miami Hurricanes logo, the college at which the Rock played football. Cole breaking out the Celtics jersey was an obvious attempt at heat given the Heat/Celtics series in the NBA. Theyre playing to the crowd, not the television. Oh, and Im English.

Yes. It always amuse s me people complained WWE lost it's wrestling when I simply dont think it ever had a world. Well, outside the big book of heel steretypes of course.
Most of the references are lost on me, but I find it so hard to care either way at the moment.

It's an American company with primarily American workers that was having a show in an American city with a patriotic theme. It was a birthday party for an entertainer from Miami, who went to college in Miami and the show took place in Miami. They're not going to worry if the alienate a smaller portion of their audience for that evening. It's the University of Miami's hand-sign. The school's nick name is "The U" This is their logo

Plus, we're learning new things! Next time you see someone do that gesture, you'll know they went to The U! Broaden your horizons, people!

Sometimes you have to play to the crowd even if it bugs the TV audience a bit. If you don't then why should we the fans bother going again to see RAW the next time it comes around.

Hot crowds make for better TV, and last night the crowd was on fire.

As been said, they were playing to the live crowd, not the TV one. So Cole wearing a Celtics jersey during the playoffs, and eventually getting a Rock bottom and PE popped the crowd. I hate when they try to do soccer references in England, since I don't care, but you have to play to your live audience.

I don't care for faces using the local team to get a pop...but I tend to find heels trashing the local team for heat funny.
I think I just like hearing the crowd boo loudly =P. Almost always gets the job done, here in the states anyway.

Do they ask the wrong person or just do something without knowing anything about it

I'd love to see WWE try a sports reference at a Glasgow house show.
Someone coming out to a Celtic or Rangers top would incite a riot.

If the WWE had a shred of common sense, theyd just send someone out in a Scotland jersey. I never got why they didnt do that with England, just have people come out in England shirts. The 3 lions is always appreciated.
