ok so since we know wcw passed on the chance to kill off wwe (a fact wwe flatly denies) but we all know it could have went either way......
what would wrestling be like today if wcw had won the war? would they have left wwe alone and made their version of the invasion a bit more even and had wwe continue as it is today?
would we be hearing dave penzer say 'this match is for the wcw IC championship" ?
any thoughts?

I'd like to hear this story. When did WCW pass on killing WWE? seriously? this is a story i got straight from more than one person in the biz when i asked at a signing. i believe its in a couple of wwe dvds ( the it could have gone either way situation) they were blowing wwe out of the water for almost 2 years so why's it sound so far fetched?

To be honest, I think wrestling may have gone back to being territorial once WCW went out of business. Which, it would've...

On one point here......
There's a massive difference in a company resoundingly beating the other financially and having the ability to purchase them.
If WCW was so much of a burden and shame to Turner Broadcasting, and was so mis-managed...what's to say that if WCW would even have the oppertunity to buy the then WWF?

If you subscribe to the SS97 was a work theory... there's a side theory which involves Vince knowing he was on the edge of bankruptcy. Out of loyalty to Bret for so many years of service, he told him the truth and that if WCW got wind of it, he would not receive the same offer so he should take it as soon as possible.
Basically, the only reason WCW wanted Bret was to hurt the WWF. If they're going bankrupt, you can offer Bret chump change after the fact.

Yeah Turner would have done anything for WCW with those ratings. Even parts of 97. Turner would have done it to hurt his competition in cable more than anything, but he loved his wrasslin.

Ignoring the exaggeration....
the business as you know it would be dead. WCW was an unbelieveably shitty business. As "wrestling" goes and as a business goes. It would have gone belly up or been "cut" off by Turner Broadcasting either way. Maybe it would have bought them some time, but why would anything about that company change?

I think wrestling in America would be all but finished within years if WCW won the war. They would've absorbed the WWF, but the mismanagement and bad business/booking decisions would have still ultimately bled WCW dry. WCW would still suffer the same fate with the AOL/Time Warner merger, and wrestling would relegate back to the tier of roller derby and monster trucks as niche sideshows.

Idk what would have happened. I agree that the business as we know it would be completely different. I'm sure at some point WCW would shut down but who knows what would happen. With the internet, we could have/had a new age territory system of sorts or maybe a company like ROH would have popped up still but been on USA or something. It's times like this I wish I could view alternate realities.

So I've yet to see this mythical story about WCW "passing on" killing WWF explained. I'm curious to hear it and what wrestlers have told you it's what happened at signings.

Not to pile on about how crappy of a business WCW was.
I went to Starrcade '97. This is probably their biggest show ever, if not, their biggest angle ever. We went down for the onsale and stood on line to get great seats, and we did.
3 rows off ringside, you know how much the tickets cost? $100. lol. This is their biggest show ever and they don't know how to price it right. I think ringside cost exactly the same. Now, obviously, from a fan perspective, this was great because WCW shows and Nitros and whatnot were dirt cheap, but c'mon, how could this business ever possibly survive, with what they paid their talent and their lack of house shows and whatnot?
The best WM tickets on TM go for 10 times that, and this isn't exactly the greatest or hotest WM of all time.

That time WCW passed up on putting WWF out of business was amazing. Such a noble and humble idea to just let the WWF steamroll over them. It was like they weren't even trying!

WrestleMania, at it's worst, has ALWAYS been a star studded, main stream media spectacle that has grown over the years to become a staple in the entertainment industry. Starrcade was a big end of the year show that, save for maybe 4 or 5 times, was never properly treated as such outside of maybe one match. MAYBE one match. And comparing ticket prices for a Starrcade in 1997 to a WrestleMania in 2011? WAT.
