I dunno about that... It may not have had the fanbase, but I think people knew about it at least almost as much. Yea I mean, you've got to consider that while ECW wasn't as big as WWF or WCW it was still the number 3 company during the hottest time in wrestling history. Everybody knew about ECW, most just didn't watch it because they had no way to do so. ECW was technically an indy fed in the sense that they had no major financial backer, but they were an indy fed with a PPV deal, syndication, and a ton of notoriety amongst fans. And later had a show on national TV. So yea, they were indy...but they were absolutely huge compared to the indies today. I'll put it this way: When I was in the 5th grade (1998) I had a ton of friends that were wrestling fans. We all knew about ECW, who the top stars were and what kind of violent matches they had. We even knew stuff like the fact Raven was ECW champion before coming to WCW, and that Cactus Jack and Steve Austin wrestled there before. To put it in perspective, how many 10-11 year olds do you think sit around at school talking about ROH? Or even TNA for that matter?[/quote] TNA maybe. I'm just saying they weren't a threat to the big two. They were like the Ross Perot of the three.
