I love the site but don't disagree with you, OP. It is a bit annoying. Also, looking through some Nightmare Fuels entries...wow, these are like the most easily scared people ever. I remember reading one recently where a troper described in detail how a movie scene made him/her, and I quote "vomit out of pure shock". The movie in question? The Incredibles. Out of curosity, where is that thing from? I keep seeing it now.

So TVTropes is in one non-ending Dethroning Moment Of Suck? .....no......It Just Jumped The Shark, and it's slowly becoming The Wesley of the internet. {Spoiler}YMMV {Spoiler}I'm going to hell for this...... They can still recover, hence why I don't think it's Jump The Shark thing. That and I love the "Crowning" tropes.

TV Tropes boils down to a bunch of folks making up cute lingo with a whole lot of awkward innuendos.
It's basically the E! network for geeks.

If you want some specifics: knowyourmeme.com/memes/are-you-serious-face-seriously#.TpUT_N6XusoIt's actually one of the funnier meme origin stories, IMO. Staying on topic, I was actually really into this website back when I was about 13 or 14 and it was in its early stages. Then I lost interest and completely forgot about it. A few weeks ago I saw the site mentioned on this board so I thought I'd check it out. I really wanted to get into it, but there each term referenced about ten other terms, so defining things feels like a scavenger hunt.

I already thought TV Tropes was pretty bad, and then I watched This Troper.

I like the site for the most part.
BUT I will say that the "dethroning moment of suck" page for nostalgia critic has some of the most whiny and ridiculous things that I have ever read don the internet.

What they should do is simply make a list of every trope, offer a description of what it is, then offer a list of examples.
The site is WAY too self-referential.

What they should do is simply make a list of every trope, offer a description of what it is, then offer a list of examples. The site is WAY too self-referential. And now that you mention it, that runs counter to conventional web site design - a web site should be easily navigated to what you want as conveniently as possible. That's also why I don't mind the "Wikipediazation" of TV Tropes - it makes it more accessible and useful instead of being a cesspool of jargon. If the site's administrators would crack down on the self-referential problem it would become a far more useful websitefor identifying tropes that do in fact occur in fiction regardless of who identified it. Just because it doesn't want to be formal doesn't mean that it can't have standards.

That kinda reminds me of how TV Tropes once had an infestation of TGWTG fanboys/girls, which accelerated my estrangement from TGWTG. On a related now, anyone ever notice that most article examples consist of anime and/or video games? There's something telling about that to me.

I hate it, because procrastination is no longer the thief of time - TV Tropes is.

I used to love going on there, and getting lost for hours. Scared the hell out of myself at 3 AM reading Nightmare Fuel entries.
My problem is that, after a while, you realize how exaggerated everything is described, particularly on pages that are more subjective (Nightmare Fuel, Crowning Moments, etc.), to the point where it just becomes self-parody and takes away any value originally possessed by the subject.

I hate how people use them assuming everyone knows what they mean. You sound like a Confused Outsider. Oh great, looks like we've got a Deadpan Snarker on our hands.

I used to absolutely love the site for periods I had 24 hour duty and had exhausted every webcomic, this forum and others. I still read a few here and there but as you pointed out, after a bit meanings get stretched VERY thin and it isn't as fun to read.
