I love the Simpsons in their prime years (Up until about 1999ish) it was some of the best TV known to mankind and I will say it will be hard to find many shows better than prime Simpsons episodes.
It is sad to that for the last 12+ years they have become a shell of their former selves (Although the occasional good episode does pop up and the movie was very good). Although while I haven't watched the show regularly for 8 years there would be something sad about a world without the Simpsons.
And honestly not that I would miss the show in its current form BUT it would be sad to see the show go out due to a pay dispute rather then the creators and producers of the show wanting to pack it in. I am honestly shocked that they didn't go off the air sometime in the early to mid 2000's. But here we are in the year 2011 and they still want to make the show. Almost 22 years and its still going.
I think the best thing for me would be for the cast to do one more season beyond the current order and call it a day and end on a mega epic series finally that they could have a year to write and build up to.

I've been saying for years that they should cancel The Simpsons, along with Family Guy and South Park, and replace them with 3 or 4 specials that air throughout the year. They've all just been mined way too deeply to get anything resembling consistant season-long quality. I disagree about Family Guy and South Park. I don't even watch much Family Guy but I know it has its place and a following. Not sure Seth Macfarlane needs all three of his shows though. As far as South Park goes, they never have a bad episode IMO and both South Park and FG have sustainability as their characters allow for a lot of wiggle room to change to suit whatever statement they want to make politically/culturally/etc. Simpsons was more based in its own universe with slight nods to real world events, but more survived on the strength of their characters and relationships and really have played most interesting scenarios and gags and it just feels like they're dragging it along for the sake of it. I'd be interested to know how their viewership compares to ten or so years ago. I mean I never hear anyone talk about the Simpsons anymore.

Like many people have said but way overdue but I'll be damned if the show doesn't get a epic series finale. The Simpsons were a huge part of my life and the old episodes was probably the greatest comedy that has ever been written. I watch the old episodes from time to time and can quote anything from the old episodes. IT NEEDS A FINALE!!!!

All the people saying ''Finally'' will still watch the finale. Don't lie.

On The Simpsons needing a finale: The only way I can see the show working a proper finale and still be funny would be to play it as a tragedy. I can't even imagine another way to cap off a series with such an offbeat sense of humor.

All the people saying ''Finally'' will still watch the finale. Don't lie. I've wanted it to end for a couple years now, but I'll be damned if I miss the final episode of one of my favorite TV shows. No matter how bad the last few seasons have been. I'll still watch and I'll still shed a tear knowing how old I am that there will be no more new Simpsons episodes

Not yet ... but they should randomly mention Osmodiar I think he did show up again briefly in a random episode. Forget the context though. checking the internet, apparently it was the crayon in Homer's brain episode. Ozmodiar showed up and said that cartoons don't need to make sense or something during the animation festival. So apparently they already used that joke

All the people saying ''Finally'' will still watch the finale. Don't lie. Well of course because most of us grew up on the show and loved the older episodes with a passion and still do. I just wished the show quit while it was ahead before it became a joke. It's sad that there are more unfunny episodes then funny episodes of a show that could of been considered the greatest TV show of all time. It's also quite sad that a 12 year old cousin of mine refuses to believe there are funny episodes of this show. I also would like to post this since I have a excuse to post this.

It will be a shame as I honestly prefer the Simpsons over any of the other similar cartoon shows. (excluding South Park which is very different and funny)

*shrugs* I think it's gotten better the last season. It went through a dull period, but I think it's picked up. There has been a huge upswing in quality the last 3 years or so. THey have moved back to character driven stories and character development and moved away from every week being "Gee, isn't Homer wacky?" Which is when the show went down, down, down. Now it is so much better, and people who haven't watched in years still rag on it with no foundation.

I looooooooove the Simpsons but the last seasons have been terrible. Every episode focused on a lame side character nobody cared about and EVERY single second they'd do something so random/out of nowhere and try to make it funny. I don't think Family Guy was even that bad.
If it does end I think it's for the best. Let the show rest in peace.

Sucks for anyone who still watches but it's been dead to me for years, and its cancellation wouldn't make a difference in my world. It means that in syndication your chance of seeing episodes that are good doesn't keep dropping XD

Well, it's good to know that the show might finally come to an end, as the show's producer, Al Jean, potentially sees no reason to end it on his own terms, just solely so he can still get a paycheck. I'm not disparaging Jean, but that was the way I felt after writing a review for "The Scorpion's Tale", where there was that anti-crankiness drug that causes senior citizens to have their eyes fall out.
But, there have been plenty of long-running shows that did not get a proper conclusion, and the possibility of "The Simpsons" joining that group doesn't make me feel good, even though I stand by the belief that the show began sucking midway through the 10th season. For a show lasting this long, they at least deserve the chance to have a big final episode.

I'l go ahead and say it right now....I still remember the first "First Run" episode I missed.
Homer's Phobia- The Episode with John Waters.
Personally I think that a 45% paycut is BEYOND draconian on Fox's part. It's less than they were making BEFORE their last raise in 2004. As it stands now they make, on average about 400k Per episode. Per character that comes out to about $15,384.62 PER character for Castelleneta, and more per chracter for each cast member. (Oddly enough if broken down this way, Yeardley Smith and Julie Kavner make the "most" as they ONLY voice Lisa and Marge in every episode respectively. Mind you Kavner voices ALL the Bouvier women, but as they only make occasional appearances....you get the comparison)
I also agree with another point....The Movie would have made a GREAT finale.

It has gotten much better over the last few seasons, but its still no where near the quality it was during its glory days. If the best thing you can say about a once amazing series that went through a very long lull in quality is that its now "adequate" then is it really worth keeping around? Not too mention I just feel story ideas have been picked clean. Every so often they come up with something original, but 9 out of 10 times the plots just feel like a rehash of another episode from 10 or more years ago. I don't care how much focus you get or how much new blood you bring on board on the creative side, that's not gonna change. The show has just ran its course. Outside drastic concept changes (a time jump maybe? Bart and Lisa as High School teenagers?), there is just no way to make it relevant again.

Homer is trying to survive the zombie apocalypse along with Bart and Lisa after Marge and Maggie are killed during a shootout with a power-mad lunatic. Or should it be Clancy and Ralph Wiggum?

Another thing that keeps pissing me off......
The CONSTANT Retcons.
While I do understand the internal continuity means that Bart is ALWAYS 10, Lisa is always 8, etc, the constant shifting of the timeline really irks me. Marge and Homer went from High-Schoolers in the 70s (74-75ish) to COLLEGE Freshmen/Newlyweds in the 90s (Specifically Late 90s).
JUST going off of that, Not even considering the other materials that have specific dates for the children's Birthdates, there's a little over 2 DECADES missing. Add to that the only consistancies that they've kept are Bart's Almost out of wedlock birth, and His and Lisa's Ages in reference to each other.

If Bart is always ten, that means now that he was born in 2001 (holy crap does that make me feel old). Considering the show had been running for over a decade at that point already, yeah it's gonna wonk up continuity a bit. They were messing with backstory even back in the old seasons; Homer's Barbershop Quartet has Homer become one of the most famous people in the world, but nobody has ever mentioned it before. And I'll be sad to see the show go. It's not as good as it used to be, but we still get some good episodes every so often.
