Slightly off topic, but I'll always remember homeroom of my junior high school, where all the kids that were even allowed to watch South Park and/or WWE (Strict household I lived in), they always brought in these printed out sheets of paper with South Park characters dressed as wrestling names. Never really got that trend or what it was about. The internet circa 1999 is filled with WWF/WCW/ECW wrestlers in South Park character format, they're still floating around on the net today. Kenny's Krib! That was one of the biggest WWF/wrestling-related "fansites" around in the late 90s. That, and Mirror Images.

Funny thing is that the South Park/Pro Wrestling thing is still appreciated today. Dolph Ziggler's Twitter Avatar is a South Park Caricature of himself. I used to go on Kenny's Krib at least once a week!

Yeah, when South Park was at it's peak popularity wise it was all over wrestling. Billy Gunn and Road Dogg always wore South Park t-shirts in late 1997/early 1998. Golga had the plush Cartman he'd always be carrying around. Hell, even in an AOL chat with Vince McMahon someone asked Vince who his favourite South Park characters were. The Attitude Era and South Park truly were a match made in heaven. I wonder how they got away with that without getting sued by comedy central. Of course, im sure CC saw it as free advertising, but if they tried it now,,,

Which begs the question: why did they wait until 10 years after it was a relevant satire to do the WWE South Park episode? They've actually answered this. With South Park being one of the first shows to embrace the internet early on, they had plenty of emails (their FAQ still has records) from '98-'01 asking them to do a send-up of pro-wrestling. Trey and Matt stated wrestling already makes fun of itself, which is true. With how self-aware that era was, there really wasn't a whole much they could do. That's why the did the episode at wrestling's cultural lowpoint so that, instead of satirizing wrestling, they could make the episode about that part in boys' lives when they're younger and get super into it. I think it was the right call.

Ah...the late 90's. Attitude WWE, South Park (without the social messages of today), Jerry Springer & Rap Metal (Limp Bizkit, Korn, etc.)
We were an angry bunch, weren't we?

Alright, maybe I went a bit overboard with the MLP comparison, but all I was trying to say is that it was a pretty big deal at the time. And yeah, it was probably annoying back then seeing it everywhere, but I still think the constant barrage of FiM references on the net is more annoying.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go bash my head on the wall for getting a facepalm (one of my least favourite memes, period).

The Attitude Era and South Park truly were a match made in heaven. They wore South Park shirts before they were readily-available in stores. They had their air-brushed versions with random catch-phrases on the back. "Look Mom, No Curse" (Referring to the "Armstrong Curse" that Road Dogg had somehow avoided.) "Road Dogg 4:20" (No need to explain.) "Look At...My Ass", (Complete with arrows pointing down.)

I remember going on those old geocities pages to find South Park versions of wrestlers, then I'd print them off which would take 30 minutes and put them on my school books.

Alright, maybe I went a bit overboard with the MLP comparison, but all I was trying to say is that it was a pretty big deal at the time. The comparison is rather apt in terms of how both art styles are not hard to emulate and customize, but this thread has finely demonstrated how far apart they are in acceptance and popularity. Now, as far as other Attitude Era signs go, you'd be hard press to get through a show without "I'd rather be in ____".
