Did Vince actually answer that question? I believe he said Chef. Vince likes Chef and Cartman. I'm surprised Vince didn't try and get Isaac Hayes to sing Mark Henry's theme and give him advice on being sexual chocolate.

Was there ever a reason given why Golga carried that Cartman doll around? Maybe John Tenta explained it on here, but I couldn't find anything.

this thread has finely demonstrated how far apart they are in acceptance and popularity. Yeah and thank god for that. If wrestling embraced mlp,I think I would rip out my eyeballs. The south park phenom in wrestling is one of my favorite things to watch on old shows. It's such a fascinating crossover.

I'm glad to see this thread partially devolved into a MLP war. Business as usual.
But yeah, even as the too-young-to-watch-South-Park-but-dammit-I-tried age I was back then, you could make a pretty good parallel comparing the obscene popularity of BOTH South Park and Wrestling then vs. now, where now they're both considerably more niche. Which one's fallen farther probably depends on how you feel about South Park getting more political, but I digress.

Here's what I could find on Wikipedia. Doesn't really explain why Cartman though. Maybe it was (being at the time) the big ratings-grabber: the episode where they speculated "Who is Cartman's dad?" Led people to think Golga was a suspect.

IT actually made sense given the popularity of wrestling and South Park with kids, teens, and 20 somethings at the time. Even WCW from very late 1997-1999 had those signs. Is it just me or does it seem like in the Attitude Era there were much more signs in the crowd in general.

I think it might be that people are just more courteous with their signs and not trying to constantly get them over. Look at most of your Raws nowadays panning the audience at the start and there's still a ton of signs.

They've killed Kenny" t-shirts, it's most mainstream known and accepted than ever. Since the 90s, it's very recently won several Emmys, is still a critical darling and hasn't suffered ratings wise despite the influx of new media. "South Park" hasn't "fallen" in any respect compared to wrestling and there's absolutely no argument to the contrary.

There is no doubt that like Wrestling and South Park both peaked in the late 90's and early 00's. Yes South Park still has its audience and critical acclaim. And South Park even grabs headlines with controversial episodes once in a while. BUT its no where near as popular as it once was. South Park was doing double its current ratings and was just freaking everywhere. Wrestling still has its audience and as seen with the Rock and John Cena match can get mainstream exposure once in a while. But Wrestling now isn't what it once was back in the Attitude era. Ratings and buyrates were a lot higher and the mainstream exposure isn't there as consitantly as it once was. All in all Wrestling and South Park followed the same path as far as popularity in the last 15 years. Peaked from 97-01 and despite declining have found their audiences and still carry on just not as big as they once were.

But 'South Park' has become big in so many different other ways that wouldn't have been possible during its initial huge craze. It's maintained much more of a cultural relevancy, from sparking the Scientology hoopla to getting Kanye to acknowledge the "gayfish" episode to the pessimism episode, people still largely care what "South Park" has to say. Look at 'Book of Mormon,' which won the Tony last year and is the biggest Broadway hit in eons, which wouldn't be possible without "South Park." Outside of the return of The Rock and Punk's promo, when is the last time anything in wrestling has had any sort of regular mainstream acknowledgement or acclaim?

Was there ever a reason given why Golga carried that Cartman doll around? Maybe John Tenta explained it on here, but I couldn't find anything. I remember asking John a question about that a LOOOOOOONG time ago --- along the lines of if he had spoken to Matt and Trey about the character or if Vince just ran with it, and from what I remember, it was done without any involvement from the South Park guys. Maybe just free publicity.

Ohmigod, that would have been hilarious! I think the main reason for them using Cartman was because he was the most popular and most quotable character.
