On the weekend I had a drunken encounter with a fellow WWE connoisseur who amongst many other things lamented that 'Wade Barrett is crap'
My kneejerk reaction was to disagree as I've always considered myself a Wade Barrett fan but does he have a point?
Obviously it's all a matter of opinion but I'd say Wade was definitely the best non Daniel Bryan rookie from NXT Season 1and of course he was the leader of The Nexus and on their debut they really were the most awesome thing to happen in The WWE in a long time.
I'd also say I have a personal fondness for Wade because he's English and I'm English and he was the top heel in the company when I went to my first WWE event of Raw in Manchester in late 2010.
But if I put all that aside the only redeeming quality I can think of is that he looks bad ass without being a beefcake.
He's quite good on the mic but he tends to just spout the generic heel speel and in the ring he's really nothing special I don't think. The only good match of his that I can think of is his Summerslam match against Daniel Bryan but he doesn't really have a bad match with anyone so that's a moot point really.
When are your thoughts? am I getting this all wrong?

I don't think it's generic heel spiel from him at all. Since August his character has been primarily concerned with making a much money possible from the WWE and has been dead set on doing whatever it takes to whoever is in his way to get tot he top of the card. It's the most realistic way to portray his excellent Bond-villain characteristics and had lead to entertaining television with anyone that he's paired up with.
I think he's great.

Barrett is awesome. It does seem like Nexus aside WWE doesn't have much interest in giving him anything decent to work with, though.

Very good on the mic (a British accent honestly helps him sound better than he is, too).
Pretty good in the ring, but nothing revolutionary or super-exciting.
Considering he's still a rookie in WWE-terms, he's really good. I don't quite buy him as a main event guy, but he could be there in a few years.

Nope
Great on the mic, good in ring prescence and he's really underated in the ring. Although he doesn't have great matches, he very rarely has bad matches.

There's been a steadily growing opinion that Wade is one of the worst in-ring guys in the entire company.
I don't agree, yet.

I think he's great on the Mic and his character makes sense etc. But I personally find it all so boring, especially the in ring element. He seems like a good intelligent guy though so I hope he continues working near the top of the card, I can't bring myself to begrudge him that.

Is Wade Barrett rubbish? Hardly. Sure, his dialogue is a little standard (I hesitate to say generic; I mean, he's no Alberto del Rio ), and while good for a big man, he isn't putting on any barnburners, but it works for Wade; Wade's strength lies in having enough aura and charisma to carry a little a long way. One could compare him to Evolution-era Batista in that regard.

To me, in-ring ability only goes as far as the angle you're in will allow you take it; if the match doesn't have any "juice" it's not going to be good, and Barrett hasn't had any "juice" to his matches for a while, IMO. But during the "free or fired" era, I thought he was definitely one of the best guys they had, overall, even if his in-ring ability wasn't the best in the world. I mean, is he Daniel Bryan? No, he's not. But he's the sort of smug jerk that can make the crowd hate him during his matches just by his mannerisms alone, IMO. So, no, I don't think he's rubbish. I actually quite like him.

I am yet to be impressed by him. Nexus leader? Seriously? He was PHENOMENAL. Nope. Boring as hell, average at best in the ring and, other than an accent, brings nothing on the mic. Just by being the first guy to really get over on Cena, he seemed interesting but, that faded fast.

Not sure how popular this opinion is, but I think that aside from Punk, Barrett is the best superstar on the mic currently. Also while he may not be the best in the ring, I can name quite a few who are worse than him. So no, he's not rubbish.

The material he's given to deliver on the mic is a detriment, because he's very good at that.
In-ring, I agree with the general sentiment. He doesn't seem like a guy who does "big man offense", but he doesn't really have much do him aside from them telling us every single match that he used to be a bare-knuckle boxer. So what? He's stock WWE and he's not that great at that, either.
I want Wade Barrett to be a main eventer. I like him, but I want him to be awesome. He's not there yet.
