Post by EoE: Well There's Your Problem on May 22, 2009 18:57:21 GMT -5
I've just woken up after spending 9 hours playing Gran Turismo 4, the first time I'd played the game in about 2 or 3 years.
I'd forgotten how many freakin' cars are in this thing. I mean, they have an actual DeLorean in this thing. And a Jay Leno custom car.
This series of games was pretty much the only reason I wanted a PS3, but since I wanted something now, I went for a 360, which actually turned out to be quite excellent.
Anyway, back on-topic, what are your thoughts on possibly the greatest car racing game series ever made?

I mark for Trial Mountain, especially in Arcade/Drift Mode in the first game.
Also, I managed to get around Laguna Seca in 1:06 in a Suzuki Escudo in GT2.

Seriously, only an idiot couldn't win with that car. My little bro is an absolute freak for Gran Turismo. We own ALL of the GT games and 5 Prologue. The only one we won't be getting is Mobile on the PSP since we sold our PSP off. I also have a cousin Jeff who is freaking awesome at it too, but he went with a 360 too. He likes Forza alot, and my little bro likes it to but not as much as GT.

I really got into Gran Turismo 3. That one is probably my favorite (not including 4 since that's the only one I haven't played). But it's been quite a while since I last played it.
I tried GT5: Prologue the other day and I couldn't stand it. I don't know why, but I think it's because I've been spoiled by Forza Motorsport 2. I freaking love that game and it makes me miss my 360.

I liked the first through third GT games.
After that...the honeymoon was over for me.

I loved the GT series. Then I got Forza and it blew me away. And with Forza 3 set to announce at E3 it will stay like that

And this isn't me trying to be rude, or to call you out, or be some PS3 fanboy or anything like that. And if any of you who prefer Forza want to answer this go ahead. What is it about Forza that makes it better than GT? Every reason I ever read pretty much just says "It has car damage" (which rumor has it GT5 will have as well) or "It has Online" (which without a true high speed connection (and again GT5 also having this)). They both seem close to the same to me. If there something I'm missing somewhere?

I was intrigued by GT 4 back when it first came out, but I didn't like the whole fact that there's no real damage at all. I just don't like that about a racing series. You race, you crash, you get damage.

The online auction house It really has kept the Forza community alive It did have Farrari Lamborghini and Porsche but now GT will have those. The no damage thing kinda bothered me. Of course I never played GT prologue but GT5 rumored track list looks impressive. GT improved on the car count hopefully Forza those the same (Because those endurance races are boring as hell with only 8 cars) And more tracks would be awesome (Daytona, Le Mans has been rumored, Road America Spa just to name a few.....) And is GT5 going to have Weather and Night conditions like PGR4?

I bought a PS2 just to play the fabled Gran Turismo game...
The honeymoon lasted a mere two months, basically until it went down to looooooooooong races or to impossible brand-specific series.
I mean, I'm NOT spending hours letting the CPU "learn" how to win a 4 hours B-spec race. And I'm NOT playing the same Citroen 2CV race over and over again because I need to drive flawlessly otherwise I'll lose, as I start last and closing even a 2secs gap is a titanic feat.
Oh, and the "no visual damage" deal is horrible... what's that? Need for Speed?
So, yeah, visually amazing, many many cars [but the lack of Ferrari, Lamborghini and of licensed Porsche] is a bit of a letdown, not to mention the useless presence of two decade of Japanese cars...
But in the end the game gets waaaay too long and dispersive.

I remember reading about GT in an old Playstation magazine and it looked cool and I really wanted it but I didnt end up getting it because it looked like more of a sim and I'm more of an arcade racer fan and also the no vechicle damage thing was a major turnoff. Ridge Racer Type 4 was more up my alley even though I never unlocked all the cars.

I'm not particularly fond of the games, myself. But I'm not really into sim racers. The one I've had most experience with is GT2, I borrowed it from a friend a long time ago to try and get into it, but it just didn't do anything for me. The racing is all incredibly boring to me.
Not bad games, just not my cup of tea at all.

GT3 was the pinnacle for me. My only gripe is those endurance races. Why do they think anyone is going to enjoy those?
In that same vein, I never got into GT4, even though I do own it. I would enjoy the games so much more if there were, you know, races I don't have to plan my entire day's schedule around to have enough time to complete it, let alone win it.

My main problem with Gran Turismo is the opponent AI, or the lack thereof.
I don't know if it's any better in the newer games, but at least GT3 had the most robotic racing game AI known to man and that (along with the lack of damage or even the slightest hint of crash physics, enabling you to bounce off armco barriers, rock faces and other cars quite handily) killed quite a lot of the realism. At least in Forza you kinda sorta feel like you're... well, RACING.
