That is ridiculous. What he did is sick (having those images) but the punishment does not fit the crime. That judge is equating it to murder.

I am fine with it as possessing the stuff makes him complicit in its creation. If there is that much material in his possession, then he created a market for every one of those actions that were depicted.

I get the logic. 454 images/files times 5 years per file gives you 2270 years of jailtime.
I DON'T WANT TO DEFEND IT.
BUT.....
That's 2 Millennia worth of jailtime with as sentenced "No possibility of Parole". Prison isn't simply supposed to be punitive. Prison is supposed to be at least in theory rehabilitative. We're assuming that a man of 26, with NO criminal record, no history of violence or molestation, is somehow so dangerous that not only are the crimes he committed horrible; but he must be permanently removed from society (Or at least for the remainder of his natural life).
I believe that everyone deserves the CHANCE to change. Following the leter of the sentence says that this person is incapable of that and must essentially not only DIE in prison, but must spend 20+ lifetimes (Assuming 80 years in a life) to adequately punish him.
Edit: Moved the Modified portion to a seperate reply.

I hate child molesters, I HATE them, but there's 0 reason for this guy to be in jail for life. The 5 year maximum, plus years of counsiling would be sufficiant in my opinion.

Very hard to decide how I feel about this....
On one hand he had an awful lot of child porn....
On the other hand life for a non violent crime doesn't sound right to me at all....

Nah, that't not a lot, that's roughly only about 200 MB of porn. I know folks with 50gig+ more. Of course, that's all legal porn.

I have no problem with this, so long as the actual child molesters also receive life sentences for their crimes.

Castration and a lobotomy would have been enough punishment.

The man needs serious help, not lifetime imprisonment. Definitely worth an appeal, at least. He SHOULD spend time in jail, don't get me wrong, but it's not something worth a life sentence.
The people who deserve lifetime imprisonment are the sick f***s who kidnap and rape the children to make the kiddie porn.

Also makes me wonder, if it was just one giant .jpg would he only have gotten charged once. The legal system confuses me. Do we have a lawyer on these forums?

He's in possession of it which makes him just as guilty as those who have made it.

I agree with the quote that it's less punishing for the crime and more to set an example or make others feel same, and that's not what it is suppose to be about.

I have no problem with this, so long as the actual child molesters also receive life sentences for their crimes. I agree with this. As a victim of sexual abuse as an adolescent, I have no sympathy whatsoever for anyone who would do something like this. Fortunately, the person who abused me is now dead, so I don't have to worry about him hurting anyone else. However, had he taken pictures of what he'd done, they'd likely still be in someone's collection, and there would be no closure for me. (or his other victims.) For me, the scars started to heal through years of therapy; true closure finally came when I got the phone call from my friend saying "George is dead." I can totally understand other people who take longer to heal, or the ones that never completely do, but for me, knowing that he was dead closed the issue. Like I said, pictures or videos would have only prolonged things for me. So I think that the punishment fits the crime. Child pornography only facilitates child sexual abuse. You can't have kiddie-porn without a child being involved; you can't involve a child in a sexual situation without harming the child in some way. Sexual abuse stays with you for as long as you live. It's happened to me, and I've learned to deal with it. Some people never do. The piece of shit that hurt me is dead, and he never took any pictures. The pieces of shit that do take pictures keep the horrible memories alive for years to come. That is unforgivable, IMO. Knowing other victims like I do, some of them would rather be dead than ever have to live through that again. These f***ers who get prison time less than life get the chance to "start over." The victims never do. Anyway, that's my two cents on the issue. Lock 'em up, throw away the key. Hundreds of children were abused so that this sick asshole could get his rocks off. Whether he touched them or not, he shares part of the blame. F*** him.

I agree with Cactus Matt. Also, and maybe this is generalizing, but if someone possesses child porn, I can't help but think that it's only a matter of time before they eventually molest a child themselves.

Simply put, when a crime of action (Molesting the same children he had pictures of) had a lesser sentence than the crime of passivity (Posessing the images), that was the time to realize that something was broken.
Am I saying that this hump shouldn't be in jail and was completely innocent of any crime? HELL NO! Lock the bastard up! BUT.....don't let the (theoretical) guy that actually TOUCHED the kids get a lighter sentence thanks to a technicality in how the laws were written.

This is total bullshit. Is rehabilitation not even a possibility for someone who didn't even take the images themselves?
