Regulated or something? Not to get political but I just saw where they followed the president shopping and took pics and reported what he got his kids for Christmas. They're a pain in the ass generally and have caused a lot of shit over the years-does anyone not have the power and just muffle them?

Anything for the people who would rather take pictures of Princess Diana's crash rather than attempt to help her out of the car.
But yeah, in America, I think they're protected by the first amendment, so I don't think anything can be done in the US.

The thing they don't tell you, is celebrities love the paparazzi. Sometimes, they have their agents call them to tell them where they will be eating, shopping, or partying, and at what time so they can be seen at the right places wearing the right clothes and taking care of their kids and stuff. Sometimes it backfires and they are made to look foolish to the general public. But the good outweighs the bad in their eyes, which is why you don't see too many celebrities taking an active stance against them.
Think about certain people you never see scandalous photos of. Brock Lesnar, Rob Zombie, Michael Cera. These people don't have their agents call the media when they leave the house, so they get to live pretty private lives.

Because it's perfectly legal to take pictures of someone when in public.
And besides many celebrities get free publicity for going out and eating a hamburger. What could be easier? It's just shows them how popular they've gotten.

The thing they don't tell you, is celebrities love the paparazzi. Somehow, I really really doubt Obama appreciates his kids finding out what they're getting for Christmas by watching TV. That's some real bullshit. I'm really big on keeping Christmas presents secret, even after the Santa Clause thing is over with. I would completely flip out if that happened to me.

And with all of that, I highly doubt the paparazzi give a shit. They're the scum of the earth.

As long as they're not doing anything actively harmful or malicious, they're protected by the First Amendment in the US.
They can be sued for libel, character defamation, and other things. And they're sued (successfully) quite often. But I don't think they've ever been arrested unless they're stalking or actively harassing or causing harm their target. The Princess Diana thing is a very extreme example, sadly.

The issues surrounding paparazzi are being discussed in the UK just now with the Leveson Enquiry. The enquiry is mainly about the phone hacking stuff but general media practices are being called into question as well.

Then again, they are not normal children. They are the children of the President of the United States. If my dad was always on the news, I would have watched it more often myself. Another thing that I hate about the paparazzi is that they will snap pictures of people on their private property. I do like that some of the places where they are the most active have taken the approach that if you use a telephoto lens to take a picture of someone you have broken the law.

I hate that when I follow gorgeous women and take pictures of them it's called stalking and I end up with a restraining order but when the paparazzi do the same thing it’s not only perfectly legal but they get paid for doing it.
Which is a stupid way of saying I don't really understand how it is legal, I don't even like being caught on camera at football matches.

I am gonna say Obamas kids don't watch the news all the time to see him on TV. I am sure at first they may have, it was fun to see dad on TV, but now they'd be f***ing sick of it.
And would rather play with the dog or hunt for the treasure Lincoln buried in the White House.

Well, either way...the potential is there. And it's not even the sort of thing that is interesting. Why on Earth does anybody care what the President bought his kids for Christmas?

Why on Earth does anybody care what the President bought his kids for Christmas? Advertisers, companies, retailers, etc. For years, Alan Greenspan would have the label on his bottled water removed because he didn't want to appear to support any brand. Imagine if you're Mattel and you have proof that the President of the United States buys your products for his kids? They'd probably send them a bunch of toys and use it for publicity ad naseum. I've heard plenty of actors, musicians, and other celebrities say they hardly buy clothes, food products, etc. that much because companies will just plain give them a ton of stuff.
