I heard that etiquette-wise, you're supposed to tip 10%.

Yeah, I always leave a tip at buffets if the waitress brings my drinks and refills. Waitresses depend on tips for much of their income.
And if you don't tip, you run the risk of them remembering you and doing something nasty (like spitting in your drink) the next time you go.

Whenever I eat out, I always make sure that the waiter is tipped at least of couple of dollars. To loosely quote Eddie Guerrero during a conversation with Chris Jericho, for you or me, a couple of bucks may be nothing. For the waiter/waitress, it may be the difference in whether or not the light bill gets paid that month. That's the way I see it, at least.

Yeah, I leave a few dollars at buffets, but not as much as a regular tip (so, about 10%). And I usually just throw my change into the tip jars at ice cream shops unless someone does something really fantastic. Like this guy at the Ben and Jerry's... I asked if it was safe for someone with a nut allergy, since the scoops were probably the same, and he was like, sure, we can fix that. So he goes off, gets a trowel type of thing, scoops the top of the ice cream out of the way to get at untouched ice cream at the bottom of the carton, and scooped my ice cream from there. That guy got a tip as big as the price of the ice cream. I didn't expect that kind of awesomeness at all.

I never leave a tip at a buffet. Simple as that.

I don't tip them as much as a regular waiter, I'd imagine buffet-workers get a real hourly wage, but I gotta give them something for them work.

As for the buffet, you may get a few cents. You are a busboy, not a waitresses.

I tip Chinese buffets all the time. The Chinese got it going on when it comes to portions. Lots of food. Joe: Hey, who didn't throw in? Mr. Orange: Mr. Pink. Joe: Mr. Pink? Why not? Mr. Orange: He don't tip. Joe: He don't tip? Whaddaya mean you don't tip? Mr. Orange: He don't believe in it. Joe: SHUT UP!

This is probably not going to be easy to explain or understand, but when I go to a buffet this is how I tip:
If it's a girl serving the table, refills, clearing plates, etc. I will always tip. But if it's a guy serving the table, I don't leave a tip. Something about leaving a tip for a waitress means more to mean than leaving a time for a waiter.
But when I go to a normal restaurant, I tip both, but tend to leave a little more if it's a girl.

Yeah you're right. You do decide but most Chinese buffets also have menu items. I think you would still get alot even if you didn't order the buffet. You don't have to get the buffet. That off buffet menu exists.

Hide the tip underneath the plate so the busser gets it. They get paid crap too.

That guy got a tip as big as the price of the ice cream. I didn't expect that kind of awesomeness at all. So you ordered an ice cream with nuts in it despite a nut allergy? No, of course not. The sucky thing about food allergies (aside from their inherent obnoxiousness) is that they can get more sensitive, or triggered more easily, with each subsequent exposure. So early on, I had to actually eat nuts for my throat to start closing up. Now, just getting a bit of the allergen is enough. So if a scoop was used to scoop out nut-containing ice cream, and then it was used to scoop out my nut-free ice cream, I could still have a reaction. Even if a clean scoop was used, if a nut-tainted scoop had been used earlier, those allergens may still be on the top level of the ice cream. So what made this dude so awesome was that he understood all of that without me having to spell it out, and then proceeded to actually go in with clean utensils, scoop all of the potentially tainted stuff away, and get stuff from the bottom that he knows wouldn't have been touched before. Fantastic service.

If she gives you a drink and plates/silverware then yes you have to tip. I didnt tip when she did that one time and then she asked for the tip and I was really emabarssed. . OH f*** NO. If somebody ever asked me for a tip I would raise so much hell that they would likely lose their job. Getting shafted on the tip is part of the job. I've been there, it sucks when it happens, but you still smile at the customer and whatnot. You never ask for a tip. That's total bulls***. I went to this one chinese restaurant around thanksgiving and on my reciept it said 10% and then showed the total cost plus the tip same for 15%

Regardless of whether or not it is expected, I don't tip unless I am trying to look good for a date, or the hot waitress. That's it.

They provide the drinks at my local Chinese buffets. So I tip. But I don't usually tip as much as I would as a regular restaurant.

I usually leave a tip at Chinese Buffets particularly the Mandarin in Toronto because the waiters/waitresses fill your water glass once every 30 seconds!
In Vegas at the M Buffet, Rio Seafood and Main Street we left a couple of bucks each.
