So I work 40 minutes from my home and the only places near my work is a Mexican Restaurant and a Chinese Buffet that is strangely 90% staffed with white american women...I eat at the Chinese buffet about twice a week for lunch and have been wondering what they think of me considering I leave no tip...
Is it really expected to leave a tip at a buffet when all she does is sit me and fill my glass once? I kind of feel bad everytime I leave...Do you guys tip at buffets or any other situations that make you differ from the normal 15-20%?

I started a thread about this about 5-6 months ago. If she gives you a drink and plates/silverware then yes you have to tip. I didnt tip when she did that one time and then she asked for the tip and I was really emabarssed. So yeah its crazy you have to tip her if all she does is fill your glass once but I found out the hard way how it works. Just for the record I like the buffets where you pay before you eat and sit yourself, and get your own drinks and plates because those places you dont have to leave a tip obviously.

You shouldnt have to tip at a buffet.
Its the same with when I was in an Orange Leaf frozen yogurt place. It was self service and they had a tip jar. For f***s sake.

I'm gonna sit this one out this time since we've had this thread before and it didn't end up pretty. I usually leave a dollar or two whenever I go to a Chinese buffet, but definitely not like a regular restaurant. I have walked out of one leaving no tip before and it pissed the staff off. What do you expect when you fill our drinks once and then ignore us until you drop the check? We had empty drinks for an hour. I would hope places the specialize in buffets actually pay their employees more than regular restaurant employees though. If not, they're scum. That's all from me. I'm outta this thread and never returning.

I'm not tipping anyone for any kind of bad service. If my drink glass is empty for longer than 5 minutes, you get a dollar. If I'm waiting too long, you get a dollar. If you suck at your simple remedial job, I will tip you a dollar. There's no reason I should be coming out of pocket to support you when you couldn't even rightfully support one of my meals. That I paid for. With money.

If it's a completely self-service buffet, then no. If servers come by and fill drinks/clean plates then I would leave a couple bucks.

If somebody ever asked me for a tip I would raise so much hell that they would likely lose their job. Getting shafted on the tip is part of the job. I've been there, it sucks when it happens, but you still smile at the customer and whatnot. You never ask for a tip. That's total bullshit.

It all depends on the place. At the restaurant I work at, all credit card tips are paid in cash at the end of the night. Some places pay those on your paycheck though. As far as asking for a tip...yeah, that's bullshit. I never have, and never will and I get pissed whenever I've seen coworkers do it. (Which for the record, is only once.) That's gotta take some balls.

If they bring you refills before the liquid hits the ice, I say yeah.

I usually leave a small tip for Chinese buffets. Not the same as a full-service restaurant, but usually a couple of bucks, and a little more on holidays (we usually leave around a $5 or so tip on Christmas, for instance). Being a waiter is a pretty miserable and underpaying job so every little bit helps.

Buffet, I'll do a buck or two; maybe a bit more if they go above and beyond with refills and whatnot. Certainly not to the level of what I'll do for regular service though.

I tip at least a dollar for each person at the table. Which is usually 3 - 5 bucks. It`s considered a good tip by cheap buffett standards. One time my son got sick and puked everywhere, and the nice Chinese waitresses helped clean it all up. I left them each 10 bucks for their help.
If I go to a full service restaurant, I try to make the server`s night with a nice tip. 25% of the tab usually.

I normally tip no less than $5 usually....unless a server goes out of their way with exceptionally horrible service...which is not too often...

You take one for yourself, on the other, you write the tip and calculate the total. When I worked at Mimi's it just would go onto our checks. It might not be that way everywhere, though.

I always toss 2 or 3 bucks on the table just because I'm "out" and that's just part of the deal of being "out".

At the Chinese buffet I go to yes I do,at the pizza buffet I go to no,mainly because they had a sign saying not to leave tips.If its a place like Golden Coral I cant leave a tip because you pay first and I don't usually have cash on me.

As long as the waitress is at least bringing me refills, I'll tip. If I have to get both my own food and my own drinks, though, I don't. And unless the service is poor, I always leave generous tips. After all, the difference between a regular tip and a generous tip is often only a few bucks, and I consider that to be a small price to pay to help possibly make someone's day. That's what I do at places like Golden Coral or Sunny's BBQ.

I subscribe to the Mr. Pink theory of tipping. So, no, I don't tip at buffets.
