If she gives you a drink and plates/silverware then yes you have to tip. I didnt tip when she did that one time and then she asked for the tip and I was really emabarssed. . OH f*** NO. If somebody ever asked me for a tip I would raise so much hell that they would likely lose their job. Getting shafted on the tip is part of the job. I've been there, it sucks when it happens, but you still smile at the customer and whatnot. You never ask for a tip. That's total bulls***. I'm English and the last 3-4 times I've been to the States (NYC, Atlanta, Phoenix) we were ASKED to tip at pretty much every restauraunt we went in. Some would ask, others would write it on the receipt. I think it's bullshit too, IMO you tip for service, not to pay their wage. I don't care if you earn lots or a little, if you serve me well you'll get a tip, if you do the bare minimum, you're getting nothing. On the original topic, no I don't tip at buffets. At the Chinese buffet by me they'll take your plates but the majority of the time the staff are all standing around the bar doing nothing.

If they work hard, I usually give them a tip. But considering usually all they do at buffets is bring you rolls and refill your drink (occasionally), you're not really serving me. If i see them really trying to make an effort (usually cause I'm the one of like three people there) then I try to give them something, even if it's not 10-15%.

I tip for service, but I will sometimes do it for when the food is good or I like the place.
As for buffets, I do it when they bring food to you, like a churasceria, or if there's a waiter helping me.

For people who are all for stiffing the waiter, what do you expect them to do for a tip? What is good service to you?
I don't stiff people, especially if I return to the establishment.

If they do something to benefit me and help my experience at the buffet, they're getting at tip. Even something as simple as giving me my drink. End of.

This is probably not going to be easy to explain or understand, but when I go to a buffet this is how I tip: If it's a girl serving the table, refills, clearing plates, etc. I will always tip. But if it's a guy serving the table, I don't leave a tip. Something about leaving a tip for a waitress means more to mean than leaving a time for a waiter. But when I go to a normal restaurant, I tip both, but tend to leave a little more if it's a girl. Yeah cause what's a GUY need money for right?! I tip at Buffet's two or three bucks. Any place where I buy food I pay with my card and if there's a place on the receipt to leave then I tip.

Eh, I can't really rag on anyone for wondering the ethics of tipping at a buffet since I've wondered about it myself.
But needless to say, working in food as well, yes I most definitely tip at a buffet. I always give bomb ass tips though, delivery, dine-in, buffet, doesn't matter to me. I know how much an awesome tip means to someone working that sorta job, and as it's been said, it makes the difference as to whether or not they're gonna get bills paid, and if not, maybe it's helping them further save up for that new car or something nice for themselves. I think it's just generally a good thing to do. You get back only what you put in, and all.

I worked as a waiter for years so needless to say I tip generously any time I eat out. However... I'm not going to have this intense of a reaction, but I agree with the general sentiment. Anyone who ASKS you for a tip is just asking to get stiffed. That's just as rude as the customer not tipping in the first place.
