I was watching last night's Conan where Ashton Kutcher namedropped Koko B. Ware in his interview and I've noticed, despite his jobber status, Koko B. Ware is one fondly remembered individual.
In fact, that was my main argument in the whole "Koko's in the Hall of Fame?!?!" issue. I think I've heard more random Koko B. Ware references in mainstream shows than any other wrestler (well, Hogan and Rock excluded). Dude made an impact. Seems like the late-80's WWF (1985-1989) made stars out of everybody in the roster...no matter where in the totem pole. For some reason, I don't see Triple H or Orton references in my future.
JYD and Jake the Snake are also up there for me. References on SNL, Always Sunny, etc.
...and Andre, of course.

I'll second JYD, he was mentioned in neighbours and on Oops TV (they're both highbrow shows so don't worry if you're not familiar with them).

Andre got a reference on freaking Supernatural a couple of years ago. One character was talking about how everyone's heaven was different, he had found a way to jump into other people's heavens, and he had visited Andre's.

Andre got a reference on freaking Supernatural a couple of years ago. One character was talking about how everyone's heaven was different, he had found a way to jump into other people's heavens, and he had visited Andre's. There are times when I'm seriously tempted to say Andre could be the most famous wrestler, ever. It seems everyone, even people who've never watched any pro wrestling in their lives, has a vague inkling of who Andre the Giant was. The only other guys who've even come close to that are Hogan and Rock, and I'm not sure if either of them has reached that same status. Back onto the main topic... I've found Sgt. Slaughter gets brought up more than a lot of guys in non-wrestling contexts; the GI Joe connection probably helps. Hacksaw's another guy who a lot more people seem to be familiar with than one would expect for a guy who was never treated like a BIG star during his prime.

Not just because he recently died, but there were quite a few "Macho Man" Randy Savage mentions everywhere wrestling is brought up. I believe his role in the first Spider-Man brought his name out of hiding, and it's been used ever since. Plus, even the most delusional, casual fan knows what Randy Savage sounds like.

In my opinion.....
Hulk Hogan is without doubt the biggest name in the mainstream. This is followed by Andre the Giant.
Other names that are recognised a lot I think are:
Jake the Snake Roberts, Macho Man, Ultimate Warrior, the Undertaker, and Shawn Michaels.
The Rock is obviously a huge name. But only for people of a certain generation and younger (IMO). My parents (who are 50ish and have no interest in wrestling) would certainly never have heard of The Rock. Same goes Steve Austin.
In the UK, the name Giant Haystakes is near the top of the list and the British Bulldog is pretty high up to.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever heard a random Undertaker or Shawn Michaels reference on mainstream TV.
The Warrior and Hacksaw mentions reminds me of the "How I Met Your Mother" episode where Lily and Marshall dress up as them in anticipation of going to WrestleMania.

Steele was mentioned on Seinfeld about Jerry's girlfriend having man hands, "it's like dating George the Animal Steele"

I am a fan of Randy and Jason Sklar's podcast, Sklarborough Country. It's a sports/comedy podcast that sometimes references 80's wrestling and they have made mention of many names from the past including The Von Erichs and King Kong Bundy on multiple occasions. I think Bundy gets his fair share because he was the a-typical fat guy wrestler and of course the Von Erichs get a ton of mentions when someone wants to shine the light on the darkside.

That is why the 85-92("Rock n Wrestling") generation is more relevant (and has out lasted the the "Attitude Era" guys). Nobody remembers Savio Vega or D-Lo Brown(except us of course) but they sure as heck remember the "Bird Man" and "Honky Tonk". Savage and Hogan still have bigger status among casual fans than either Rock or Austin, and will be more fondly remembered as the years go on. Don't even bring Triple H or Orton into the conversation; they will be forgotten as soon as they retire. Just something about that mid 80s/early 90s era that really captured a generation of kids and even adults.
BTW....I must of heard "Macho Man's" name being dropped a bunch of times. Two of the top my head; one was on Family guy and the other one was during a comedy show where some guy was doing impressions of him and Hogan.

Steele was mentioned on Seinfeld about Jerry's girlfriend having man hands, "it's like dating George the Animal Steele" Kramer also went on a riff about Killer Kowalski once. In addition to Savage, "Ravishing" Rick Rude gets a mention by Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar.

I'm not sure if this counts as an "old school name", but on The King of Queens, Doug tells someone something along the lines of, "Don't make me Cactus Jack your ass".

I've heard an Undertaker one at least once off the top of my head. It was on the Daily Show in the early 2000s and Jon Stewart had on someone who was of the opposite political side as him. The audience kept cheering Stewart and booing the other guy. Stewart posed at one point and saidsomething like, "What is this I'm Steve Austin and he's the Undertaker?" or something like that. Can't really recall any with Shawn Michaels though other than shows he has actually been on like back in 1995 or so when him and Diesel were on a Nickelodeon special.

I know I've heard Gorgeous George mentioned more than once.
Also, even in the US, El Santo is pretty well-known.
