Just a thought I had while watching some Rocker matches.
Why is it that Shawn went on to be a legend and Marty went on to be the name used for the tag-team member that fails after the team breaks up?
Was he just not very good? Was it just the randomness of booking? Did he have heat? Did he have "personal demon" problems? Fickleness of the fans maybe?

He was a good wrestler I thought. When they split, I also thought their speaking abilities were mostly on par. Marty had even less control over his demons than Shawn did.

Shawn had issues, Marty had way bigger issues. Plus, he had a bunch of legal problems at the time as well

He was given numerous chances, and screwed every single one of them up.

He actually turned down the heel push. Shawn being Shawn made the most of it.

What's often ignored is that Shawn had just as many demons as Marty did, but the WWf turned a blind eye to his problems. Not to mention that Marty mentioned in a shoot interview that someone important from the office told him point blank that they saw more in Shawn than in him and that they were going to push Shawn.

In ring I always enjoyed Marty more during their tag team run and after the split. However, I do believe that HBK had a better upside.

Actually, I felt Jannetty could've been given a big push after his match with Angle on Smackdown. He could've made a great addition to the US or IC title scene at the time.
Of course that's when they actually had wrestling.

Not that it counts for anything, but I always liked Marty more than Shawn. I was a big Jannetty mark when i was a kid. He had a lot of in ring talent, and he had a handsome pretty boy look just like Shawn. As mentioned above, he had a lot of problems; for one, he was very immature and irresponsible.

Of course that's when they actually had wrestling. He actually got rehired to a new contract on the strength of that match. And then promptly got arrested over a domestic dispute and released again. Which pretty much sums up why Jannetty's career went the way it did, in spite of all his talents.

Both had their problems...one managed to parlay it into a career.
The other used it to self-destruct his.

The lesser spoken of reason that still has merit, Marty never graduated from his Rocker persona so he instantly came off as the lesser of the two. Shawn evolved the Rocker gimmick into HBK. Marty clung to the Rocker look with a vice grip and came off as if he couldn't let go of the tag team. When he faced Shawn at the Royal Rumble 93 that was the time for Marty to evolve himself. Instead he became twice the Rocker to make up for Shawn's departure. The goose was cooked from that point.

Yeah...no. Jannetty's problems were alot worse. As in 'Can't leave the state due to parole' worse.

I think it is a mixture of 'personal demons' and the difference between Marty and Shawn's personalities. Shawn was willing to play the political game in 1991 when Marty was starting to get frustrated and was trying to get he and Shawn a job at WCW. I think Shawn himself sort of turned on Marty in real life around this time. Marty was great in the ring, but he didn't really have Shawn's incredible charisma. Shawn also had a little bit of size on him. Shawn seemed to be very hungry to move up the latter and had a lot of drive. I don't think Marty had this same passion to get ahead. Did I mention personal demons?

Every time he was about to step up and get a push, he got fired, happened in 1992, 1993, and 1994 and the funny thing was all these incidents that got him fired all occured around Febuary of those years, must be a bad month for Marty.

Shawn Michaels' demons were kept backstage, Marty Janetty's demons were there for all the world to see.

Did I mention personal demons? There is no doubt looking back now, that Shawn had more charisma and a slightly better look. As great as Marty was, I don't think he would of been able to pull of being HBK. Shawn also had that little extra arrogance that made the HBK character so great.
