I recently found this amazing system and have been playing it for the last week. Currently re-playing Final Fantasy I. I know this is simply a smaller version of the Gameboy Advance, but I really like the feel of the system. This is a thread appreciating the Gameboy Micro. Any of you other FANs have the last system to bear the name of Gameboy. This is the one I had, the Famicon anniversary edition system.

It's a cool concept and a sleek look.
The only reason I didn't get it was because it didn't also play the pre Advance Game Boy Games I already had.

That's a cool design! I never knew about the Gameboy Micro, at first I thought you were talking about the Gameboy Pocket. I've got a GB Pocket around here somewhere, as well as a GBA SP. I have no f'n clue where my SP is though and it's starting to bug me, because it's an awesome system. I just never had many games for it, but this place in town still sells GBA games and I saw a few that I want. Unfortunately, the DSi doesn't play GBA games. I hate how they removed that feature.

yep i have one, found one at work for less than £10. now worth £50 even if 2nd or 3rd hand.
decent battery life for a handheld, graphics dont suffer for the smaller screen and is perfect for playing while on the go.
i should try to hunt down the final fantasy games on the gba, only way i'll really play them.

Why did Nintendo drop the Game Boy name?

Why did Nintendo drop the Game Boy name? The DS name took over. Perhaps a rephrase is needed then; why did they drop Game Boy for DS?

Perhaps a rephrase is needed then; why did they drop Game Boy for DS? DS was selling like gangbusters, and money talks. Game Boy had a long lifespan, and with DS having the GBA slot to start with, it helped ease the transition.

probably just wanted a fresh start for the new generation of handheld consoles.
didnt know final fantasy 1 & 2 were re-released on the gba, not having played a single version of the game... now i know what to look for on ebay/games stores/2nd hand stores.

That system seriously has the BEST d-pad ever made. It just feels....perfect.
Why the hell hasn't Nintendo replicated that d-pad in anything since?

Any of you other FANs have the last system to bear the name of Gameboy. This is the one I had, the Famicon anniversary edition system. Same one I have, the Micro has the very best D-pad ever made, and some of the best face buttons. It is a great little machine. Perhaps a rephrase is needed then; why did they drop Game Boy for DS? From what I have read, Nintendo didn't expect DS to take off like it did and that they would have had a Gameboy Advanced successor. When the DS became a smash, they went full force with it, and when a new machine was in the works, they wanted to keep what was working.

When the DS became a smash, they went full force with it, and when a new machine was in the works, they wanted to keep what was working. Pretty much this. Nintendo didn't use the Game Boy name because the DS was considered a pretty risky move, if it flopped they didn't want to damage the Game Boy brand. But DS eventually exploded in popularity, and now carries significantly more strength then the GB brand

Yeah, Nintendo was originally adamant that the DS was not the successor to the Gameboy and was going to be a sideproject type deal but it took off so they just ran with it.

It's a cool concept and a sleek look. The only reason I didn't get it was because it didn't also play the pre Advance Game Boy Games I already had. I recently got myself a GBA SP so I could play the old-school Game Boy games. I originally left them at my parents' place so my nephew could play them but the contrast on the original Game Boy I had got so bad that the games were unplayable. So I took them back and found an SP to play them on. But yeah, I've had a Micro for like 5-6 years now, when Wal-Mart was getting rid of a ton of them for like $40. I don't have a ton of GBA games but the Micro does get quite a bit of use. For such a small piece of hardware from that time period, it kicks ass. It has a great clear screen and just feels natural to play...unless you have giant hands. Then I'd imagine that would be an issue.

Dude, Mother 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. One of the few games where the ending got me legitimately emotionally.

It was a real interesting piece of tech. But whenever I played my friend's GBM it just killed my eyes with how tiny the screen was. Also felt a little awkward to use with controls that small. I already hate Nintendo's tiny D-Pads, so that didn't help much.

I own one and I never play it. I use my SP or DS instead. I am 6'5" with large hands, they do not agree with this system. I do think it is really cool though.

I always felt like the Gameboy Advance's design was like the bastard stepchild of designs for handheld Nintendo systems. Every other one (Gameboy, GBSP, DS) was designed to either mirror the home consoles or to just look sleek or solid. But the original Game Boy Advance looks like some kind of cheap knockoff system. Check them all out. Although, someone remind me if this came out during the N64 or Gamecube era. If it's the latter, everything would make more sense. Funny, since the Gamecube also gets the least attention and praise among the home consoles. Of course, that's if we're not including Virtual Boy .....
