Yes I would rather go to a local establishment where you can get better quality food but as far as "casual dining restaurant chains" go, do you think Applebees is decent or would you rather go someplace else ?

I never had a problem there, and I love their boneless chicken and salads, so I'd gladly go there.

It's useful in a pinch for stuff like chicken tenders and fries, but that's about it. If I lived in a place that had tons of great mom-and-pop places, I wouldn't even consider giving them the time of day.

I got a gift card for Xmas and I havent been there in a while. The only problem I remember was too many families/annoying children.

I like it okay. It's nice when you're tight on money and you would like to take some friends to eat.

Haven't been to one in maybe a year now but never had much of a problem with them outside of moving on from stuff like burgers, chicken and simple stuff like that to more, well I don't know what to call it but it was ciabatta sandwiches, Asian Orange chicken noodle bowls and stuff like that.

I don't think it's bad. They have decent items.
However, I wish they didn't get rid of their Chocolate Glacier dessert.

It's not amazing. I eat at Applebees every now and then.

Not at all. It's decent for moderate dining out. Now the true subject of ire should be TGIFridays, have never gone there and escaped without indigestion.

It's not the worst thing ever, but the big problems with places like it and all the other national chain "casual dining" places have to do with what they put into their food. Lots of those places make extensive use of MSG and other additives, many of which act to keep your stomach from informing your brain when you're full.
Still, I like that I can go there and get a spinach salad, I like that I can VERY cheaply get a side of rice and beans with bits of sausage in it, and I have made a habit of going to a local one with my brother on NFL Sundays due to the specials they have (25 cent wings, $1 sliders, cheaper drinks).
However, now that I'm in Jersey City and directly outside Manhattan, I don't have nearly as much of a reason to go. Too many better options, many of which aren't that expensive, in the surrounding area.
By the by, of all the major national casual dining chains, I'd say Chili's is the best.

You know what to expect when you go there. No surprises. Not spectacular food, but predictable and safe.

Of the chain restaurants, Applebees is probably the last place I'd go. I'd go to Chili's, TGI Fridays, hell I'd even try to find a Bennigan's before going to an Applebees.

Applebees is so "meh" that it's usually always within walking distance o a superior restaurant making it a bad choice usually.

It's not bad, but living near other (and better) restaurant establishments definitely nerfs the experience out. If a friend was taking me there, then cool I guess, but I prefer our UNO Pizzeria's, Buffalo Wild Wings, and (since I live so close to Maryland), The Greene Turtle. That one is my personal favorite.

Much of what has been said is true. My biggest problem with your TGI FriChiliBee's type joint is that it has so utterly lowered the standard for American cuisine. Everything is homogenized and uninspired right now, and for so many people, that is the de facto "dining experience" to which they compare everything else. From a culinary standpoint, it is extremely disheartening.
As someone said, it's safe and predictable. Which, in and of itself, isn't bad, but unfortunately has few positives beyond that in most cases when approached from a macro examination rather than a micro examination.

Not a bad place to eat, but based on experience and what Hall Pass taught me is this: not a place to pick up chicks.

Everybody I know hates it, I've never been there so I wouldn't know. I can't imagine it's awful though, seems like another restaurant to me.

It's alright. There are better options, but if I'm with a few friends and they're in the mood for Applebees, I won't argue. I like their nachos. Not a bad place to eat, but based on experience and what Hall Pass taught me is this: not a place to pick up chicks. Unless you're from Ireland.

They have some good food but not a place I would go out for dinner on a constant basis.
