After Paul Heyman's spotless mic skills on Monday's RAW, I got to thinking about his first run in the WWF when he replaced King as commentator alongside JR. Watching old videos of them now I realise how brilliant the two were together; there was a great clash of characters, their (at times) real anger towards each other emphasised the arguments they had in relation to storylines, they played off each other fantastically when it came to comedy and they always brought focus back to the talent.
But at the time, I hated Paul Heyman.
Not the "I wanna see this guy get his commupance" kind of hate, I just didn't wanna see him on my TV screen. For years I thought the only bad thing about Wrestlemania 17 was the fact that Heyman was on commentary. I think the reason looking back was that him replacing King was the first big change I experienced in wrestling; my younger self was used to tuning in and catching up on the action with JR and King, and suddenly King wasn't there anymore, and no-one explained why. Instead there was this shrill man who was rude to JR and stuck up for the bad guys in a way more irritating way than King.
Now I can appreciate Heyman and his talents (and I'd do a dance for joy if he replaced any of the commentary team) but back then I really couldn't stand him.

HHH's heel run in 2000, only because I was a youngstah who loved all of the faces.

Definitely agree on Heyman's commentary. I thought he was good, but I believe JR and King to be the definitive announcing duo. Sadly King was never the same when he returned, and Heyman was sorely missed. I loved how he got under JR's skin.

Bret Hart during the New Generation era. I was like...9 years old and I dug the stupid 2nd job gimmicks.
Cruiserweights on Nitro. I was a huge Hogan and nWo mark. I couldn't get enough of them. I know this made me part of the problem.

WCW. I was a total WWF mark in the late 90s. Also, HHH's heel run late '99 and into '00. I hated him so much - IOW I was worked.

Edge for most of 2006-2008, due to still being a mark.

Technical wrestling in general, I just wanted to see people beat each other up and jump off things.

Technical wrestling in general, I just wanted to see people beat each other up and jump off things. This. My cousin and I thought that Bob Backlund was boring as heel, same for Dean Malenko. We actually called guys like Malenko the "boring wrestlers".

I've come to really enjoy Austin's work in retrospect, but as a kid, I loathed him and always sided with Vince.
I was a weird kid. At Mania 2000 I was pulling for Big Show.

Actual Matches
I was so caught up in storylines and non-match moments that i didnt give credit where it was due. I was in pure 100% mark mode and Thats part of the reason why i dont blame WWE for cutting back on the Wrestling aspect on Television. Younger fans dont care about wrist locks and chain wrestling. Alot of them that i come across dont really care for the "storytelling" aspect of professional wrestling. And although Vince Russo comes off as a retard who knows nothing about wrestling, hes kinda right that people turn away from the television as soon as a rest hold is applied. I really didn't start to appreciate in ring work until 2003 when i saw Michaels vs Jericho at Wrestlemania. It hit me then that Pro-Wrestling takes unimaginable skill to accomplish. But once you get that appreciation for it, there is no turning back. Even after you "Pop" your Kayfabe.

Thuganomics John Cena. I hated him when I was younger, but compared to today's Cena I consider him the lesser of 2 evils.

Technical wrestling in general, I just wanted to see people beat each other up and jump off things. Same here. I was more into the storylines and backstage drama than the actual wrestling. It wasn't until I went to a house show when I was in high school and saw Ricky Steamboat put on a ten minute clinic against Haku that I really started to appreciate the technical aspects of the sport.

Wrestling. Raw is just a boring-ass two hour commercial for a way too expensive PPV that happens far too often. Mr. Perfect beating some random jobber wasn't a 5 star match, but it was a match, it advanced Perfects character and usually a storyline with bit and pieces of commentary.

Technical Matches
Like others have said as a kid that doesn't really draw you in. I was more into the storylines, big pops, amazing reactions and results than anything. I never appreciated how much skill it took to be Shawn Michaels or Bret Hart, I never appreciated the dangers these guys went through to pull of a spot when 1 wrong move could end them for good (well sans the huge stuff), things like that you don't appreciate until you get older. After cutting off wrestling for a long time I got back into it last year and looking at the older matches, what we have now, just it all comes together in full circle, you really love that stuff.
Amazing Promos
Back then as a kid sure you knew what a good promo was sorta but you never really appreciated it until you check out someone like Heyman. Back them put Heyman and the Rock in a promo and Rock can come out with 1 line and blow the roof off, sure it'd be great but in general you'd say Heyman was better much later. It wasn't really about that then. You just saw Rock destroying Heyman with one line and that was it.

So much stuff. I always thought Foley and HHH were just taking time away from rock and austin.
Most of all, Macho Man. When I was a kid I would change the channel when he came on. Wake me up when Ultimate Warrior wrestles
