One could argue that Goldberg was the last hope of a dying company and he wasn't enough of a draw to save it. Dude...it's WCW. A super mega ultra superstar wrestler extremeist sports entertainer that consisted of Hogan/Andre/Austin/Rock/Taker/Flair/Goldberg/Savage/Cena/Taz/RVD rolled into one couldn't save that sinking ship.

Bill Goldberg. The year Goldberg was handed his first WCW Title reign, his reign was amongst ones that saw Sting, Hollywood Hogan, Randy Savage and Kevin Nash as champs. The year John Cena was handed his first WWE Title reign, he was surrounded by stars with reigns such as Eddie Guerrero, John Bradshaw Layfield, Edge and Rob Van Dam. I love all of those champs listed, but which of those two lists had more star power? Cena's star rose in a time when a brand split made it possible for him to become a headliner. Goldberg didn't have that luxury. His star shone brightest in the midst of wrestling royalty. For those that argue that Cena gets more media exposure...who was the label his CD's were released under? WWE Records. Who produced all of his movies? WWE Films. How many of Goldberg's movies were produced by his wrestling company as a starring vehicle? Although, apparently Cena and Goldberg DID appear in Ready to Rumble together.

Goldberg is/was a much bigger star than Cena.

Another thing is that Goldberg was not THE top draw on WCW. Even on his undefeated streak he still took a backseat to Hogan and Friends, as well as Sting. Plus he had Austin and the Rock to contend with. And even the second tier main eventers in WWF like Undertaker, Mick Foley, Triple H, etc. He was a star in a boom period. But even in this down period, Cena is THE guy. Whether we like it or not. I'm sorry, but I completely disagree with you here. Regardless of the booking that company suffered through during their dying days, Goldberg was always the biggest draw for the crowd. From '98 onwards, who did they constantly chant for? Who had the most signs in arguably every arena they ran in? Goldberg was the draw from before winning the WCW belt all the way to the day they closed down. He was the guy who the majority of people paid to see. Go look up any promo from that period where a heel calls out a face, or lays down an open challenge. The crowd always chants for him. It's a true testament to how popular the man was that the "Goldberg" chant became a WCW staple similar to "Austin 3:16" of anything of the like just for how regularly it came up.

Speaking of Goldberg: allwrestling.com/news/40287/duane-gillberg-gill-goldberg-hated/Arda Ocal (@arda_ocal) and Jimmy Korderas (@jimmykorderas) of #AftermathRadio on thescore.com and iTunes chat with former WWE superstar Duane Gill, who is best known as "Gillberg" . Highlights: If Bill Goldberg ever tried to get in contact with him while he was doing the "Gillberg" gimmick in WWE. Also speaking about when he did the segment with The Rock and Goldberg on an episode of Raw in 2003 on the segment "Rock Concert II": "Goldberg hates my guts. He wanted to kill me. I remember the night I did meet him, the night we did The Rock Concert were I was dancing all the ring and all. They just wanted me to just stand there and tap my foot. So I had to explain to Mr. McMahon about what I wanted to do and he started laughing his ass off and he goes, "lets do it (laughs)."

Goldberg was the Ultimate Warrior of WCW's time on top. A shooting star of amazing flash and fury and no substance. Goldberg was great for Goldberg and for a flash made Hogan relevant again but other than that what was his impact. Without Cena, Edge never breaks out in the way he did. Cena made Barrett a credible main event heel right out of the gate, sure he's languished since then, but that's a different story. Cena vs. Punk cemented Punk. What was Goldberg's lasting impact?

Goldberg was the bigger star but comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges. Goldberg was white hot for a short period of time; Cena's has been the biggest name in the industry for years.

People that aren't into wrestling anymore still reminisce about Goldberg, the jackhammer, and the streak.
Will people talk about "you can't see me", the attitude adjustment, and "JBL is poopy" ten years after Cena retires?
I doubt it.

Cena by 1000 miles. Ask a non fan who goldberg is and they'll say "my dentist"
As them who Cena is and they'll say "You can't see me guy?" or at worst "Isn't he wrestling the rock?"

For those who say Goldberg was never booed. Bret Hart turned Canada against Goldy for the rest of his career. He easily got the same or worse than Cena has ever gotten.
Honestly, It's hard to say who was/is the bigger star because Cena has never really gone away to see if there is some lasting fondness for the guy or if the negative reaction he garners really is just people who want him to go away and never return. Coercively, Goldberg's star may have shined brighter, but it did so briefly and he never came close to that level again. Guys like Austin and Rock are remembered favorably compared to Cena. This topic may be the first time I've seen any preference for Goldberg over Cena, and it's still an uneven preference because we actually remember Bill Goldberg and how big he got. The average person has probably long forgotten the man and the average wrestling fan isn't likely to know enough about Goldberg to prefer his presence over Cena's.

Because everyone still talks about Bret/HBK and they were low drawing champions. Cena will be remembered for a long time, as Punk said, he' a dynasty, and after he's gone people will still talk about his time on top.

I know plenty of non wrestling fans who know who Goldberg is. Hell, my mother of all people...she who has never watched wrestling with me a day in her life and never really paid attention to my wrestling shirts...came to me one day and said she thought Goldberg was a nice guy due to all of the animal charity work he did. I know plenty of people that know him from his car shows on Speed. These same people have no idea who John Cena is and have never seen any of his movies. Even my wife...who HATED wrestling with a passion due to an ex-boyfriend and didn't know half of the wrestlers...she even knew who Bill Goldberg was. (She'd say Cena though. She loves that man. *sigh*)

Overall Cena but he never reached the heights Goldberg did. For awhile there on every Nitro the whole arena would be chanting for Goldberg all night no matter who was in the ring. But his time was brief. Cena has been on top for a lot longer and this feud with Rock has given him even more exposure.

Everything this. Goldberg was only big because of the streak, that's it. The second his streak ended, his popularity waned down and he was never anything more than an afterthought. To add onto your point about never cementing anyone, he literally never lost a single match in his career clean. Never. One more thing, Goldberg was booed a lot during his WWE run. He got booed in his match against Jericho at Bad Blood, he was booed at times during his match against The Rock, and even against Triple H.
