Good for Tom... err Laura.
Better for her to finally be herself than to continue living a lie.

Brave soul. Only familiar with the band through seeing them open for AntiFlag nine years ago (they put on a memorable great show) but something like this takes guts. Props.

Was really surprised by this but I'm very glad for her. Coming out as gay or bisexual is hard enough but to come out as transgender takes even more courage.
I hope the best for her and I will always love Against Me!.

So how would I fill in the blank for this lame joke?
"If I said you had a nice _____ would you hold it Against Me!?"

This gives me an opportunity to improve my terminology. Transgender is where you're born as Gender A, but associate more/feel more comfortable as Gender B Transsexual is when you have the surgery, to make yourself Gender B from Gender A. Is that correct? Anyway, I don't know much about the band, but good for him for coming out and opening up. I hope he can feel comfortable with himself going forward.

Also, a slight correction to the article. She's not the only major-label musician to come out as trans. Keith Caputo, the singer for Life of Agony, came out in July and is presumably already transitioning. Also, Jethro Tull's keyboard player came out back in 2003. Also, Genesis P-Orridge, but who the hell knows what gender, if any, fits. I do wonder how the transition's going to affect her voice, but that's pretty much the only thing I'd question. Good for her.

Oh so, I get it. Against me! Was his penis, and how much he hates it. How does this affect the vocals?

Good for her. There are a couple of examples out there (Mike/Sarah Kirsch from Pinhead Gunpowder goes on the list, too), but Gabel is very easily the most notable out of all of those musicians.

Whoa. I had no idea. Doesn't change my opinion of the band at all. My favorite punk band hands down. Good for her.

Also, I'm very, very far from the first person to post this online, but the lyrics from "The Ocean" are especially poignant now. These were the first thing I thought of when I read the story:
"And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman My mother once told me she would have named me Laura I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her One day, I'd find an honest man to make my husband We would have two children, build our home on the Gulf of Mexico Our family would spend hot summer days at the beach together The sun would kiss our skin as we played in the sand and water And we would know we loved each other without having to say it"

Also, Mark Free (lead singer of Unruly Child) had what they call 'gender reassignment surgery' in the early-mid 90's and returned to singing as Marcie Free. Their last album was released in 2010 (I heard it was quite good).

i don't think ill ever refer to a him as a her. Cant wrap my brain around that mentality of being so pc that you should call a man a women. From what i understand from the article, they are referring to him as a her and he hasn't even started any treatment yet, just made a decision too, I'm no doctor or geneticist but i don't believe a hormone replacement coupled with a surgery effectively alters ones gender. I do support people having the opportunity to live as they like as long as it isn't a threat to society and this wave of transgenderism does not pose a threat to anyone, but im not going to call a bannana a peach.

If it has no bearing on you whatsoever, why would you object to calling someone what they would prefer to be called? Especially if they're willing to spend good money for it?

Love him/her. Very happy that he can be comfortable with who he/she is.
One thing that doesn't make sense (to me) is that if he isn't attracted to men, why is he becoming a female? I'm pretty uneducated about being transgender/sexual so if someone can explain it to me...please do. If my comment comes off as ignorant, I apologize.
Either way, I fully support his choice and won't stop loving the music Against Me! has made.

Not a fan of the band, but glad to see Tom be comfortable enough with who she is.
I also applaud her wife. I can't imagine that being an easy transition and she's tremendously supportive of her spouse. I can't say I'd blame her for leaving the marriage if it gets too weird down the line but I get the feeling she'd still support Tom as a friend.
EDIT: To the above post, it isn't about sexual attraction necessarily. Some people just feel more in tune and identify with the gender they weren't born as. Plenty of transgenders that are all sorts of sexual orientations. One of the people I know that's m-to-f transgender is also bisexual, for example.

Because he just fells he fits more a woman. His attitude, his action, his way of thinkin, still is of a woman. i'm kinda the same,i think my life would fit better ,or be better if i was a woman, but not to the point of having surgery, but i still like woman I guess you could say he is a lesbian?
