How did the world react? I imagine the entire scenario caused a lot of rage, or were people sick of Hogan even back then?

I was not the only little Hulkamaniac who felt the world had ended that night.

If you were a Hulkamaniac, the world nearly ended the night he dropped the title to Andre. He was still at the height of his popularity (hence the insanely high rating that show got) and the reaction of the live crowd was pretty much shock and disgust. Even as a kid I was pointing to the TV and screaming Hogan kicked out. It was a huge deal. A four year run ending like that, especially Hogan's, was a big moment in history.

The weirdest thing is that on the next Saturday AM programming, they didn't talk about anything that happened at all. The announcers references that the event happened, but said that Jack Tunney had banned any public comment on the events of the Main Event show that week for some reason. I remember Jesse Ventura being annoyed by this, and trying to talk about it, but being censored. I wonder what that was all about......I'm sure the Saturday AM stuff taped before the Main event show aired, but you'd think they could have put in some kind of commentary/reaction.

That crowd was PO-ed. For a mark, it was the worst ending possible. Looking back, it was a stroke of genius.

I like the concept of DiBiase buying off an evil twin of Dave Hebner... I just dunno why they added the random part that it was someone who had plastic surgery done to make him look like Dave instead of just saying he had a brother.

I was in high school and huge into it. There was no internet...and most of us were just starting to catch on how it really worked. No where near like today, though, where there are pretty much no secrets.
It was shocking that Hogan lost the belt. He held it for around 4 years I think. And it was Hulk friggin Hogan. Add to that the way he lost the belt...and the fact that Andre was stripped and the tournament was held...it was HUGE.

For some odd reason, my brother and I did not watch it. I remember we were staying with my grandmother next door and i assume we watched Mr. Belvedere or something, while my parents were away seeing my other grandmother in a hospital and my mom told me that she saw Hogan lose the belt on a tv there. I thought she got her facts messed up because how could Hogan lose?
Of course she knew enough about wrestling through us to know the difference. I remember utter disbelief and confusion. Looking back now i would see it coming, well maybe his loss, but not the ref switch, but it still holds up well today.

If only title changes nowadays were as big a thing as back then. Hard to imagine title reigns being measured in years as opposed to months or even weeks.

Not only that, but Earl was one of the refs during the Wrestlemania tournament, with no mention at all of the whole screwjob. Of course Danny Davis reffed for many years in the WWF after being the "evil ref." So I guess there was precedent.

I was all about it because I was never a Hogan fan to begin with. Even at a young age I saw him as a hokey, mugging, attention junkie. What I didn't like was that they showed the match in it's entirety on every single show, and that match was a stink bomb from start to finish. The only thing of interest was the aftermath.

The booing was ENORMOUS, as I recall. The reaction to the title being stripped was big too-the title had never been vacant before, and a tournament for the title was a HUGE deal. Crazy speculation as to who would win.
