Maybe so. I just don't think there's a prevalent right or wrong in this kind of scenario. PR wise it could definitely turn on Orton, but there are times I've been at shows where if certain people got put in their place it'd have been a Godsend. Could be that this guy's been bothering everyone around him all night and Orton shut him up, or just riled him up even more, could have been completely justified as well. I just don't think that because Orton's the talent, should mean that fans can just say anything they want and hide behind the fact that the talent can't really do anything about it. I think in this day and age there's a line that wrestling fans should avoid. Orton's not the guy to be policing that though. That's what security is for. If this guy had been annoying the people around him, one word to a security guard will get that quashed. I've seen it happen myself. Orton is the one that HAS to be above it because of the PR problems that can result from getting into a verbal argument with a fan during a show that cause problems not just for Orton, but for the company on whole. I agree that the fans shouldn't have free reign to do what they want, but the talent cannot play the cop in this case. Fair enough. I agree with you on a business level, but me being disconnected from that part of it I say let Orton call a guy a jackass if he's being a jackass.

If this was a independent show in a gym, I can see there being a lot more leeway, I just think the potential problems outweigh the reward of putting a verbally abusive fan in their place, no matter how offensive the words are. I doubt its the first time or even the worst that any of these guys have heard. It also depends on what was said. Reading reports it sounds like Orton got in his face and was threatening to "meet him after the show" and that sort of baloney and not just a simple verbal dressing down. IE That's just stupidity.

Notice how Orton always gets pissy with fans who cheer for his opponents over him? He was a real dickhead to fans on Twitter last year when they were mad about the Christian debacle. If it was anything like the reaction to that here then I don't blame him. Agreed 100 percent. That whole outrage was ridiculous.

Another patient for Dr. Shelby! Orton's a jackass. You don't even know what either he or the fan said... I don't know what was said, but Orton has to be above that kinda crap. If he's being offensive, just have him kicked out and we're not having this conversation.

He's the new 1996 Shawn Michaels. Is he going to make Tensai cry? Haha, that would be pretty funny. His face tattoo would smear.

My guess is that some fan may have said something about his family. That could make anyone break character.

People are blaming Randy for this yet.... when Punka acts like a dick towards fans people defend him?
For the record, threatening a fan is a dick move. If a guys heckling you or insulting you, laugh it off or insult them back. "I hate you Batista!" "I hate you too!"

Didn't Punk tell a fan to kill himself on Twitter?

My opinion:
If a fan is giving you shit and your gimmick is that you are a hard man wrestler then you should probably go and give it a bit to the fan. Kayfabe wise it makes sense.

WWE Officials: You got into a shouting match with a fan on live PPV? Orton: That's right. WWE Officials: When you're a babyface? Orton: Yep. WWE Officials: And got vulgar at a PG event? Orton: Yep, again. WWE Officials: Oh, that's it Randy. For this blatant unprofessional display, your world title match with Sheamus at Survivor Series will get one less video package for it. Orton: Tough, but fair. WWE Officials: And Sheamus will pin you after five Brogue Kicks, instead of the originally planned six.

Didn't Punk tell a fan to kill himself on Twitter? Yeah, some guy who went on a homophobic rant I think.

To be fair, Orton should be above a heckler, even if it's something said about his family(though I understand, if so).

Some of the responses in this thread have been brilliant ;D
As for Randy, after all these years performing in front of crowds he should be able to keep his temper in check by now and be a professional. He's not helping WWE at all by doing this.

Probably someone screaming at him about his alleged personal issues... But he's also just a tempermental hot head, which has been well-documented, so anything is possible.

Wonder what the fan could have said that would really get under his skin so much?
I mean he's not exactly new to the scene, he's been heckled and insulted a million times by now.
Maybe he insulted one of Orton's wives.

Really unprofessional behaviour.
But replace Orton with Punk in that scenario, and some people here would defend him to the death.
