Songs. Thought this might make for an interesting thread with some different perspectives - post up what you think to be your favorite bands' most overrated and most underrated tunes.
I'll start with KISS's most overrated
I totally get its place in Rock and Roll history - but I'm beyond sick of the song at this point. The studio version sucks and it would seem that radio stations think that the live version is the only song KISS has in their entire catalog.
IMO they have a ton of underrated material, but I'll have to vote this as the most underrated.
I know a lot of people, fans and non-fans alike, aren't a big fan of their 80's stuff - but the first time I ever heard KISS it was their Animalize '84 tape. This was one of the ones one it, and it and "Tears are Falling" I feel are among their most underrated songs. In the case of this one, it's just catchy all around - great music in the verses, catchy pre-chorus and even catchier chorus - just a great tune.

The obvious choice for Nirvana, this and Come As You Are is all I ever hear on the radio. I know Grunge has died out, but they are still popular.
Never hear any Nirvana fans talk about this one, I love it to bits. It deserves way more credit.
--
I have no idea why this got so popular besides the lyrics, there are so many better songs on The Wall I wonder why this one and Comfortably Numb get's all the credit.
Yeah, I get it's a very long tune but so is the two other really popular songs by Floyd, (Echoes and Shine On You Crazy Diamond.). This one seems to be left out in the cold while Echoes and SOYCD get a lot of credit. This song is a fantastic piece, the only thing wrong with it is that Ron Geesin wouldn't stop playing the bloody horn. But it's so rich with all the build ups, every part doesn't sound the same but that's what makes it so unique.

Beach Boys.
Overrated:
Yeah, it was a big hit but it's nowhere near their best car song.
Underrated:
Perhaps the happiest song ever and so many great chord changes. So many, that this song has no key!

Interesting Topic Orange, here's my thoughts on a band that's near and dear to my heart. The Goo Goo Dolls
Overrated
I've never really dug "Slide" that much. Billboard said it was the 9th best pop song from 92-2012 because of its chart performance. I almost wanted to say Iris was overrated but I've never heard anyone say anything bad about that song.
Underrated
I love Long Way Down. Is it a pretty simple rock song at its base? Perhaps, but it's just a great song that no one remembers from A Boy Called Goo because of how big "Name" was for the band.
I like this, I may do some more of these.

Rush,
Overrated: Malignant Narcissism, I thought this song was really overhyped back when Snakes and Arrows came out.
Underrated: Kid Gloves, I love this song.

The Whole 'A Boy Named Goo' album is great. My favorite underrated song is 'Ain't That Unusual' or 'Naked'

Porcupine TreeOverrated: Lazarus, The Sound of Muzak, Even Less (short version) Underrated: Mellotron Scratch, The Moon Touches Your Shoulder, The Sound of No-one Listening TSoNL is a rare b-side, so I understand that one being more obscure (I didn't even hear it until I got the Signify vinyl last year). Incredible instrumental that feels like you're traveling through time or something. Mellotron has this really nice harp plucking that leads into an appealing vocal harmony at the end. As far as The Moon Touches Your Shoulder goes... ^My favorite live song ever recorded, by anyone. Loved the relaxing, dreamy vibe of the song as it was, and then there's this weird guitar effect in the live version that just sounds cool. Once it hits that powerful head bopping solo, that seals it for me. Nobody ever talks about it. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png)

For the Beatles, their most overrated are I Wanna Hold Your Hand and She Loves You. Pretty much everything they did got love to the point where it can't be called underrated, but I'd say Rubber Soul is an underrated album in comparison to their others, with Think For Yourself and Run For Your Life decent songs that never get air time even on classic rock stations.

Ok, how about another one of my favorite bands, Coldplay?
Overrated
Yes the piano riff is cool, yes everyone can play it. Doesn't change the fact that this is the song that everyone knows the band by and that's a damn shame because it's not their best work. It's one of the few Coldplay songs I change station to avoid.
Underrated
My dad loves this song, my dad hates Coldplay. So that speaks volumes to me. Everyone forgets this was the lead single for Viva La Vida, not the title track. The ending of this song with the really cool rhythm changes and just a speaking voice is really cool and gives the track a haunting feel. I can't say enough good things about this track.

Coheed and Cambria
Overrated
This is by no means a bad song, but I do feel like its one of the band's weaker songs on a fantastic album. It also makes me sad that it seems to be the one that most people recognize them by. I know quite a few friends who turned down a chance to listen to more C&C songs because they didn't enjoy this one.
Underrated
Honestly, you could choose just about any song that hasn't been released as a single. I opted for this one since its one of my favorites.

So many, that this song has no key! Holy crap, a Beach Boys fan! I wholeheartedly agree with you. That entire album (Sunflower) is underrated, 'Cool Cool Water' has always been a huge favourite of mine. Their entire late 60s-early 70s output is a goldmine of underrated genius.

Anyway, while I'm here - Boards of CanadaOverrated - Roygbiv www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT0gRc2c2wQ (still a good song, but definitely not their best) Underrated - Sixtyniner. 'Twoism' is an incredibly underrated album as a whole, easily deserves to be up there with their more famous albums.

For my money, Queen's most overrated is this:
It's probably their most famous song, but I can't understand why it's such a timeless classic. To me, it lacks something that prevents me from enjoying it.
And for underrated, I choose this:
This one tends to get buried under the rest of them. It's got a great rhythm to it and really gets your blood pumping. Being part of Highlander's soundtrack helps.

Overrated - Trash, Animal Nitrate, Metal Mickey Underrated - Savoir Faire, He's Gone, He's Dead, Simon, Heroin (the Head Music era b-side, not Heroine) which category would FILM STAR fit into? The fact I'm being asked a Suede question on this forum means I'm amazed, and I thank you for that! But I actually enjoy Filmstar, I remember a ton of Brett Anderson fans ripping it as the worst Suede song ever, but I truly enjoy it. It is very simple riff wise for Suede, it is practically chug rock, but it has (probably accidentally) amusing lyrics, great production (Coming Up is guitar sheen done right) and it sticks in my head. One of those where the verse is better than the chorus though. Plus, when I'm incapable of playing any Suede songs I can always stick to the powerchords of Filmstar.
