Looking back at the Obama vs. Clinton discussion earlier in the thread, here's where I think the two differ. I do think both have buttloads of charisma though.
- Obama is an amazing stump speaker. He can really inspire you if you listen to him. He says all the right things at the right moments. He takes a more pathos approach.
- Clinton's an amazing debater. He won't inspire you through a stump speech, but he is amazing at persuasion. And backs it up with a lot of facts that are simple enough for Joe/Jane Average to grasp while also sounding really impressive. He's more of a logos approach.
Basically, Obama is a lot better at speaking from the heart while Clinton is a lot better at speaking from his head. ...No, not that head.
Anyway, this was a pretty fun (and civil! though I'm sure there were a lot of nasty posts deleted I never saw) thread. Good show all!

I'm now 0-4 in presidential elections.
Time to fire some of my employees to pay for my tax increase. I'll wait until just before Christmas to tell them though. Maybe Barry can give them jobs.

To be fair to Scarecrow, he is right to an extent. As far as the economy goes, Bush does get a bad rap over things that weren't really in his control. He had two bubbles burst on him which he really couldn't have done much to prevent. The Dot Com bubble started it, and the housing market (which was a Clinton era policy) wasn't really in his control either. He was the inverse Reagan, Reagan had a ton of lucky things happen that he had nothing to do with that boosted the economy, Bush had the exact opposite occur. Thing is, I don't believe the president has a ton of control over the economy, I think it moves where it's moving pretty much regardless. His big problems were foreign policy, and the flimsy justification for going into Iraq. That's why I think the republicans basically conceded the 2008 election. Thank you for seeing my point. The way I see it, foreign policy isn't really different between political parties. They just go about it in different ways. Republicans are more aggressive while Democrats are more sneaky. Look at Libya, besides air strikes the US didn't send any forces in, they just armed and funded the rebel army. Well, Bush can't get off the hook completely, it's just that the big mechanizations weren't his doing. Ever since the Republicans adopted Reaganomics as their official party platform, the deficit has done nothing but skyrocket. Statistically, it doesn't help the economy better than any other policy, it increases the deficit (thanks in large part to Republicans actually refusing to decrease spending in their pet areas, like defense), and increase the rich/poor gap. The economy was already improving by the time Reagan instituted it, because the biggest enemy of the economy (the OPEC oil embargo) had ended with very little effort by him. All he had to do was continue a Carter policy. Taxes have almost universally gone down, despite a lot of candidate's claims to the contrary, over the last 30 years, but we still have had recessions and booms. That should be evidence enough that that fiscal policy doesn't help. As far as foreign policy goes, what worried me about Romney was how much of a bulldog he was being regarding everyone. The US doesn't want bad relations with China, and they certainly don't want it with us (we are a lot more important to them than they are to us). To me, it seemed like Romney was in danger of being a warhawk, and would continue the trend of unmonitored military spending without direction or supervision, which isn't helpful. We don't need another war, and it seemed he was most likely to get us in one.

I'm so happy as a wrestling fan that linda lost. 100 million dollars on two failed bids and outspending the guy 4-1 (and still getting handily beat). She literally tried to BUY the seat and when anyone spends that much money of their own money on a freaking senate seat, I don't trust them at all...and I think most people feel the same way. R or D. She was clearly power hungry and in a big way.
I know the wwe says they went pg for advertising and mainstream and all that stuff but it's clear she decided to run for office (the first time) years before she ran. You just don't spend 50 million dollars all of a sudden. Clearly she wanted it for a long time and I'm sure she decided as soon as she lost the first time, she would run again...which of course meant wwe certainly could not have blood all over the tv and stuff.
I'm not saying they have to go back to the attitude era, they don't need to, but clearly they have to be edgier because of the 3 hour raw and how much programming they have. You can't keep high ratings with being so stale and not being a bit edgier.
The bottom line is they have to get at least a little bit edgier and they can now for sure because I can't imagine they would spend yet another 50 million for a seat they clearly will never win...plus she says she will not run again the next time. Of course with the mcmahons, who knows if she is telling the truth.

Obama heel turn? What's more heelish than drone strikes and wiretapping? As a lefty who voted for him, I really can't argue with the drone thing. I'd have a lot more respect for my fellow liberals if we had challenged him on killing American citizens without trial, murdering indiscriminately with robots. No way would Bush have been able to get away with such things without criticism. I hope this becomes a big issue in the Democratic primaries next time.

So... Obama's still president, the senate's still blue, the house is still red, and anyone who compromises/does anything the other team might like is still called a traitor.
Now that the reset button has been hit, what's next?

I don't know much about how the Senate and House of Reps work, but I would hope that they start to work together, despite the partisan divide between the two. If they can get past petty bickering, they could bring America back to its former glory.

I think it's pretty cool that Tammy Baldwin became the first openly gay person to be elected to the U.S. Senate.
