Not sure how to answer this. A good match doesn't mean much without a story behind it, but most of the WWE's angles are pretty shitty. So I guess the matches?

For me it's the wrestling. I like watching these guys/girls doing fun, amazing, athletic, entertaining things in the ring. I don't really care about storylines, but if it's a good one, I would probably enjoy it.
As you can tell from my post, I have no reason to watch WWE.

In the Attitude era it was mainly for everything else, right now it's solely for the wrestling since they have a lot of decent talent. The stories and characters are trash.

The wrestling: Obviously I haven't watched all that much lately.
I still stand by the main reason I got hooked on it: At one time, it actually kinda resembled a real sport. Wins and losses mattered.
That's why I watch older stuff. I can suspend my belief.

The Storylines
I usually fall asleep watching Raw each week now because of how much the stories suck and therefore how little I care about whats going on in the ring.

I too vote for the absurdity. Whether in in-match absurdity or outside the match.

The theater. So I suppose something different. There is nothing else in our culture like wrestling. A narrative that's been running nonstop for decades, that not only tries to tell stories but does so in the form of live performances, where real life can and does interject to influence the direction things go in. Well stated. I don't really separate the stories from the wrestling. It's all one big live performance unlike anything else on tv. I've watched long enough to have an appreciation for what they do.

The stories. Without them there is absolutely no reason to even pay attention to the wrestling. I know it's not real so I at least need some context to get me sucked in to what is happening, and the stories do that for me. It's why i cannot get into independent or japanese wrestling. The stories are so bland and generic and usually boil down to I WANT YOUR BELT or I AM BETTER THAN YOU. By the same token though, could you watch if you take away the wrestling? I'd definitely watch just the wrestling over just the storylines, as far as WWE goes. Their storylines aren't compelling enough to sustain viewership without the actual matches.

Other - Batista's cock...oh...read that wrong. But seriously, the storylines.

As far as WWE goes? I get by on just the matches since the storylines are kinda crap.
Wrestling in general? Good wrestling certainly doesn't hurt but good storylines are king. Extra points if the story is extremely over the top.

I think too many of you are over thinking this too much. Look at it this way, when you turn on a wrestling event on TV are you more drawn in by the in-ring action or the promos/skits/etc.? I like what a lot of you have been saying. But I'd figured the question was pretty clear and not nearly as deep as some have read it.

The options are worded wrong. The wrestling and the stories go hand in hand. The wrestling should tell the story, and that happens inside the ring. The stories that are mainly focused on things happening outside the ring are a detriment, IMO. If it can't be resolved with wrestling, it's pointless.

Thing is, there are certain things that are generally accepted to be 'good wrestling' (iow : highly skilled), that I personally can't stand. I know I've said it 1,000 times, but the "rapidfire-counter-to-indie-standoff" sequence will take me right out of a match. I don't care how much skill it takes to do.
And on the other hand, one of my favorite matches ever was a Satoshi Kojima vs. Kensuke Sasaki match that was pretty much just them taking turns trying to lariat each other's head off for the entire duration.
