The jokes are bad enough. It's the audience that makes it unbearable. A thousand people screaming in riotous joy just because somebody made a Star Wars reference. You must hate the Internet, then. Married with Children had the best laugh tracks. The show was fantastic early on but the audience made it special. You know... I've got to agree. Most of the time laugh tracks feel like some asshole tapping on your shoulder to annoy you but in Married with CHildren, for some reason it never bothered me.

How in the hell did they get a copy of my reaction to The Big Bang Theory?

I'm surprised by the reaction to the show on the boards.
Do we take nerd jokes too personally?

I love this show, but no laugh track/audience is weird.

I have always wondered that, as it does seem to be the people who are being parodied in the show tend to be the ones who dislike it so much, as the main stream audience clearly love it. I find it funny because I find it funny, but equally, I know a show like Modern Family is very main stream loved, but I think it's unfunny trash

Hardly watch the show, but what I have seen gives me the impression that just the mere mention of nerdy activities is their idea of humour. I recall one gag that basically went down like this...
Penny (I think?): "What are you doing?"
Sheldon (I think?): "Playing Super Mario 64 on an emulator."
*laughter*

Doesn't mean they really take Al's anti-women rants seriously, it's just funny.

The audience responses in general annoyed me because they were overenthusiastic and predictable. I just used Al's rants as an example.

I'm surprised by the reaction to the show on the boards. Do we take nerd jokes too personally? I don't think it's that hard to believe that some people here might not like it because it's just unfunny and not because they might "take things too personally."

Someone told me those laugh tracks are like 60 years old so the people laughing are probably dead. If true thats creepy.

I find it funny because I find it funny, but equally, I know a show like Modern Family is very main stream loved, but I think it's unfunny trash I don't really know if the 'nerds' are the ones who hate the show so much. Nerd culture is so popular right now that I wouldn't think it would matter. To me, the jokes just aren't funny. They say things in the cadence of jokes, but they're not actually jokes. Just referencing someone playing an old video game isn't funny. That's not a joke so why is the audience laughing? Take this clip for example: youtu.be/vfFd_wOQsGQHe walks in, says his mom found his old video game console and the canned laughter kicks in (in this video its blanked out, but you can hear where it was supposed to be). Now, I love a good nerd joke, but that's not even a joke. That's just someone saying something. The example of Brodie in Mallrats is a character who was a great parody of a basement-dwelling , video game playing comic nerd - but was actually a funny character to watch. I like Modern Family a lot, but I like it more when they break the 4th wall less. The talking heads I can stand, but the looks to the camera or Jim Halpert style shrugs I can do without.

I've seen this thrown around a lot but how is it any different than Stupid Jock Blackface, Vapid Teen Girl Blackface, Rich White Republic Blackface, and every other stereotype played for laughs on every other show? It's just another group.

Incidentally, a Canadian friend of mine actually takes issue with that claim, mainly due to the grossly insensitive misuse of that term.
