Oh God. OK I retract my somewhat defense. I forgot how horrible that was. Yikes...from the pronunciation to the delivery--the long ramble in the middle--it was like he didn't plan anything out, got there, s*** on the mic and then tried to save it with "I hope you die in a CAR ACCIDENT" and the crowd started booing him. Oh man--and Matt nearly died in a car accident the week he was fired in '05!There's all kinds of wrong with that. Actually, it was Shannon Moore that was in the car accident. The accident occurred on March 21, 2005 and Shannon was released July 5, 2005. Matt was an a**hole for saying that to Edge after Shannon's car accident. Plus, Matt used Shannon's car accident as a cover for the tire slashing incident. Yea but Matt did make a post about how he almost died afterwards lol

What "tire-slashing" incident?

What "tire-slashing" incident? Another reason why Matt got fired was because Edge's tires got slashed the night after he showed up after a RAW houseshow and management had told him to stay home. Management was convinced Matt did it after Joey Abs, Matt's former friend told them he hired a hitman to kill Edge. (He was angry because Matt stole his girlfriend and started sleeping with her again after Lita dumped him.) Matt's behavior had been erratic and that incident was the final straw. Matt claimed he could not have done it because he was with Shannon the night he got into an accident but its Matt,so who knows...management decided they would rather just fire him.

Also, Matt 'screwed the pooch' again by involving himself in another backstage love triangle.

So, since I'm old, I'm going to say Lex Luger. Luger: "Hey guys, I'm going to win at Wrestlemania!" McMahon: "ORLY?" You can't fail much more than that... That was definitely just a stupid rumor. I don't want to run the topic too off-rail, but I thought this was a rather legit story that was backed up with numerous confirmations (and not terribly hard to believe given Luger). When was this debunked?

When was this debunked? A few people's shoot interviews, including Luger's. They decided Hart was going over the minute his pop was much louder than Luger's at the end of the Rumble.

If it's been mentioned, ignore me, but a lot of people cite poor promo skills. a good booker would work around such limits if they really had it in mind to push a guy. You play to the wrestlers' strengths. A good wrestler would work to improve himself in every way if he wants to make it to the top. A good booker can also look at someone with no mic skills and say, 'He's a good worker, I'll play to his strengths and make him a solid mid-carder since he can't define his character and make the audience care for him enough to get to the next level." If a guy doesn't have it, and if he won't work to improve his shortcomings, why would WWE want to push him to the top. If he's Andre the Giant, yeah, sure, he gets over on the impact of his size alone. But most wrestlers who come up way short in one department cannot make it as main eventers over the long haul.

Surprised no-one's mentioned Billy Gunn. They really pushed hard for him both during his Mr. Ass and 'The One' phases, due to him having such a great look and the huge popularity of the New Age Outlaws.
But he never improved his mic skills and his conditioning let him down badly. Mr Ass turned into Mr Gassed within about five minutes.

They did him absolutely no favors after he won KOTR. He and Chyna feuded with X-Pac/Road Dogg for a month over the rights to DX......And lost at Fully Loaded. Then he feuded with the Rock, a hideously one sided feud during which the Rock absolutely buried him on the mic. This culminated witht he Rock beating him pretty handily at Summerslam. From there, he drifted. Had a match against HHH for the title on Raw (a pretty solid match IIRC) before eventually reuniting with Raod Dogg sometime in late Sept/October

And a guy who really wants to be at the top should know how to speak in front of a live crowd. In most cases, that should be expected of a main event level talent. That's what I think really held guys like John Morrison and Shelton Benjamin back. Athletic, but couldn't cut a promo to save their lives. Guys like Randy Orton and Jeff Hardy may not exactly be The Rock, but I've never found any of their promos as cringeworthy as Morrison's. Orton I get, but Jeff Hardy? His promos are as cringeworthy as they come.

I think it's time to add Evan Bourne to the list.
Cena backed him, and according to reports Steph liked him, and he gets suspended twice in less than 3 months.
