As a counterpart to the good games that were too easy, this is the opposite which is good games that were too difficult for their own good.
My choice of course is God Hand. It's essentially an over the top brawler with an awesome customizable movelist, sweet music, genuinely funny and a challenging experience. However, at some points it was just too brutal and you required insanely twitchy reactions to get through some points thanks to having to dodge via the right control stick.

Another Smilebit game, Gunvalkyrie. I'm not sure it's really the controls or just the way the games set up but I'd love a challenge-free version ala JSRF. Beautiful worlds, would love to be competent enough to explore them and zip around and shit. (I know I suck at games)

Can we include games that are unintentionally hard from glitches? If so, Silver in Sonic 06 and the Silver battle when playing as Sonic. 'Nuff said.

WWF ATTITUDE/ECW HARDCORE REVOLUTION.
Far more customization options then WCW/NWO revenge and even No Mercy (you can't create your own set in regular No Mercy without mods) but the fact that it takes like thirty buttons pressed in order to do a simple powerslam ruins them,.

Trauma Center: Under the Knife could have used difficulty settings like the later games in the series had.

I'll never understand how I found Warzone perfectly playable (for hours and hours and hours and hours) and could never spend more than five minutes with Attitude, on either DC or PSX. Seriously it's so much clunkier.

Since the obvious choices are gonna be mentioned here, such as Battletoads, I'll nominate one of my favorites.
The Devil May Cry series, aside from Devil May Cry 2. Very solid action games, but the difficulty is up there with some of the toughest. You're not really getting your hand held and guided through these games, and there are no tutorials. You're given a sword and dual handguns at the start, and then basically a whole bunch of demons tossed right at you, and a short amount of time to figure out exactly what you're supposed to do.

It's actually pretty simple, just WAY foreign to anything you or anyone likely had experienced up through then. I sucked at Warzone. I could hardly pull anything off. I rented it once or twice and improved in that time, but was still weaksauce. I still sucked at Attitude, but I owned that so I eventually got it down. I had Hardcore Revolution too and by then I was raping the computer. It's just awkward. Not Primal Rage awkward, but still goofy and very atypical of how wrestling games were up until that point. It's very mechanical. It doesn't flow. It can take easily take you out of the game until you "get it." (not that it was all that worth getting )

Road Runner's Death Valley Rally and the original CastleVania. CastleVania needs no introduction
the Road Runner game was a good callback to the old cartoons and the high speed gameplay was fun, but Road Runner had terrible traction and you had to be very particular about where and when you stopped.

UFC 2010, they literally just throw you out to the wolves in career mode, with no stats or special moves, and expect you to have a Hall of Fame career. The game doesn't level up with you, and that really sucks imo. Thats also part of the reason why i tend to not explore the land in Skyrim. The training is either hit or miss, especially if you have a sparring partner that is a douchebag. The submission system is complete bull and the flash k.o. system is also another problem with this game. The fighting styles are not equal hence why i tend to not choose BJJ and Muay Thai heavy opponents.

TNA iMPACT
Really fun engine, but near impossible computer AI. Even Shark Boy is a world beater.

you have a sparring partner that is a douchebag. LOL @ UFC 2010. You're supposed to be helping me sharpen my skills, guys. But no, no, you bring in some clown that's trying to show me up to make a name for himself in training camp and make my training go as poorly as possible. If I ever meet someone named Rob Pearsall in real life, I'm swinging on him.
