Without getting into the religious side of it, it's tragic situations like this that should make you want to celebrate Christmas.

hey guys, I was having a discussion with a co-worker today over text msg about the tragedy in Connecticut. I mentioned I was out Xmas shopping, and she lit into me, saying that I should be ashamed for myself for even thinking about Xmas shopping at a time like this. She said that we need to just cancel the holiday this year due to the tragedy, and it would be wrong to be merry when those families are suffering. I don't know what's more ridiculous, that she said that to you or that you listened to her.

This seems pretty similar to when the shootings at the Dark Knight Rises happened and people were calling for the movie to be called off.
I agree the situation is sad but I don't agree with cancelling something because of it.

No offense, OP, but your friend seems like an absolutely insufferable, attention-seeking soap-boxer.

Families suffer everyday. This was on tv though. It's a shame, but what are her plans this year? Seriously-ask her She likely has plans for a large celebration. I'm guessing she's one of those 'do as I say not as I do" types.

I tend to look at situations like this: Not giving a psychopath who (presumably) wanted attention by celebrating Christmas and continuing to go about your holidays is probably the best way to support the families involved. Give your thoughts and prayers to the victims, but don't let a maniac stop you from celebrating the holidays, it's probably what he wanted. So basically... The Grinch method.

Thank you guys so much for your advice. I am sorry to be that way. Thing about her is, she is, to use a TV Tropes phrase, a soapbox Sadie. I am no longer going to listen to her.
Again, thanks for listening.
Merry Christmas

Yes it's still ok. Yes what happen in Conn was tragic and very sad. There is no denying it and my heart does go out to the victims. But it's not a reason to take the holiday from all the other kids all over the world.
To me that is more selfish to take away then to celebrate. Because if you stop celebrating that pscyho basically wins. Because instead of celebrating you stop in the account on him. which means the guy even dead is getting more attention then he already is and does not deserve that kind of thrill of taking away the memories of the other little ones all over the world that you can not get back. Take away some kids first Christmas's or the thrill the kids get Christmas morning is a thrill at any age you can't replace. because you only live each age once. This is one holiday a lot of kids look forward to and if cancel a lot of them may not really fully understand why.
I look at it like a death in the family or other tragedies. I was always told that even with the grieving to always keep moving forward. Because the dissected would want you continue to live life. We didn't stop after 9/11 and that was a hard thing to deal with for everyone but we moved on because other wise the bad guy wins. Nobody ever once that.

Stop celebrating Christmas over something that a lot of people will quit talking about as soon as the next sensationalized story comes out? Whatever floats your boat.....

Around 450 people have been murdered in Chicago this year, over 300 in Philadelphia. Ask if she was thinking about cancelling Christmas for them.

I understand grief... but that's just plain stupid. How is canceling Christmas going to make anything better? What does Christmas even have to DO with any of this? How is staying sad and depressed gonna help the families of the victims?

Your friend is just trying to prove she's sensitive. If she really felt that way she would donate all the gifts she has bought as well as any she receives. But I bet she wont. She just wants to look like she has a big heart.

I would of told her to shove it as soon as she mentioned it. I cannot stand people who over do morality just to make themselves seem noble.

Sorry to say this, OP, but your friend's being a complete and utter dumbass.
There's a HUGE difference between acknowledging and mourning over a tragic event and actually being insensitive, and celebrating Christmas is obviously the former. It's not healthy for those not literally impacted by what happened to sit for hours on end in front of the TV and wring their hands over a steady feed of bad (and repetitive, in some cases) news- at some point you have to get on with your life.

Someone who stands on thier soapbox(Stands on a box to get at a greater height) and use tragedies, media etc to spout thier views and push thier cause. EX, Seth McFarlane gets on his soapbox with Brian on his viewpoints every few episodes. OR South Park often gets on their soapbox for their stances. OR A crazy ass boxer that in training punches bars of soap.

I hate people who pretend they're more adversely affected by tragedy for purposes of playing the 'hey look at me I'm more adversely affected by tragedy than you are' card.
Say to your co-worker ' oh well I was planning to treat you to a five star weekend in Vegas this Christmas, but I'm glad you've told me you're now too upset to celebrate it, so I gave your prize to my cousin Jim. I know that's what you would have wanted :-)'

The shooting is undeniably tragic and horrible. A couple of questions that I would ask myself:
1. Does it change anything about the birth of Jesus? 2. Does it make me feel less inclined to spend time enjoying the fact that I have a loving family?
Pretty easy decision for me.

I think you HAVE to celebrate Xmas. If you personally feel you want to, that is.
My Ex-GF is an EMT in Newtown. Last night I called her to see how she was doing and she was on the way to the EMS Xmas party. Of course no one really wanted to go, but they had to keep things going on as normally as possible. I'm not sure how most people feel, but personally I'm happy they didn't cancel the "party"
