If celebrating Christmas is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

that's just ridiculous. if you stop celebrating and spending time with family just because something horrible happens you'd never celebrate anything. they're unrelated events and not celebrating christmas just because of the tragedy in conneticut is reactionary and a silly form of insane troll logic.

I guess we shouldn't have celebrated any Christmases since 2001...........Or 1941 for that matter.

Shitloads of people die every day. Yes it's horrible that so many young people in one area died at the hands of one bastard but at the end of the day people are always going to die.
If we take OP's friend's advice and apply it then we can never celebrate anything because there's always going to be something tragic going on in the world. Enjoy life.

If we didn't have fun in our lives we'd fall apart.

Yes it is. Not celebrating Christmas wont make the Newtown situation any better.

In a society which seems to be shunning Christmas more and more these days (for example, lots of stories in New England about school holiday festivities - mainly concerts - being eliminated due to scant complaints from offended parties) it won't surprise me if it's really gone in the next several years and replaced with a colder and purely commercial "holiday season."

Seriously? Okay, yeah... it's sad and all. But dammit, the world keeps turning.
Last year, my parents were supposed to come up for Christmas. It works best for them to come up here as my fiancee and I both have jobs that are never closed... so it's tough for us to get a bunch of time off in a row at the same time. Well, about two days before they were supposed to be here, my mom calls and says she just can't make it. Her back had been bothering her for a while, and she was just in too much pain to make the trip. We had no money, and as I said... it was impossible for us to make the trip there.
Plus, she said she was going into the doctor to get a scan to see what the problem was. Well, about a day after Christmas, we found out she had stage-four lung cancer... and the problems in her back were due to the cancer burrowing through her spine. Fortunately, her spinal cord was untouched.. but there was a definite hole though her spine. She is a HUGE Christmas fan, and it really killed her to be in too much pain to do any decorating around the house... didn't even get to put up her tree. She spent Christmas in the hospital, and on top of it, got some shitty news on top of it all.
So, that was last Christmas. My dad also badly needed hip replacement surgery, but due to her chemo and everything.. it got pushed back to this summer. So it's been very very rough.
But now... where we stand. My dad is back on his feet and doing well.. and my mom, well... her last visit, they said she is down to just one small spot of cancer in her lung that hasn't grown. All other cancer in her body, including her back, is gone.. all that's left is some scar tissue. She is out of her back brace, back at work, and if her next visit at the end of this month goes well.. she'll officially be in remission. She's feeling great, was able to decorate, put the tree up, and now that there's absolutely nothing stopping their visit... it's a HUGE deal for all of us that we're gonna be together this year, since after last year.. there was really no telling if she would even be around this Christmas, let alone be up for company.
So yeah..... some random asshat ruined Christmas for a bunch of innocent people. It's sad and shit.. but, from where I stand, I have plenty of reasons to celebrate this year and that f***wad 's actions have zero bearing on my own.

I think the holidays will, understandably, have a pall on them. Quieter, closer to loved ones. But the only people who have actually lost their holidays are the families of the victims. We can be sad for them, we can mourn with them, but the general public does not need to take their burdens on as their own. The best way to help them heal I think is to move on with our lives, celebrate as appropriate and in our own way and give them their peace.
Just how I feel.

I hated Christmas long before this so yes, it's not ok.
Just kidding, it's absurd that any sort of tragedy maybe barring something like nuclear would drive people away from traditions that are hundreds to thousands of years old.

The explanation was already given, but it started when people in the late 1800s or so would literally stand on a box of soap (or more accurately, a wooden crate where many containers of soap were shipped in) and spout their sanctimonious BS.

It is ok to enjoy Christmas. Since the tragedy, I have kept those people and their families in my heart. If anything from the tragedy can have an effect on Christmas, just let it be telling your friends/family how much you love them!

I don't celebrate Christmas and I never have. This time of year annoys me to no end because of the overboard. My favorite phrase this time of year is "bah humbug!"
But while the events in Connecticut were horrific, not celebrating Christmas because of them is just plain stupid. Horrible things happen all over the world with lots of people dying everyday. No matter how bad off you are, there's a really good, if not outright certain, chance that someone in the world's got it even worse.
If anything, the shooting should make everyone think of how precious life is and celebrate it. Show your family, friends and loved ones how much you appreciate them and spend time with them. If you want to, donate toys to the families in Newtown. If anyone's going to need to have a happy Christmas, it's those people.
