hey guys, I was having a discussion with a co-worker today over text msg about the tragedy in Connecticut. I mentioned I was out Xmas shopping, and she lit into me, saying that I should be ashamed for myself for even thinking about Xmas shopping at a time like this. She said that we need to just cancel the holiday this year due to the tragedy, and it would be wrong to be merry when those families are suffering.
I LOVE Christmas, and I really want to celebrate. I made a donation today to a charity set up for the victims, and I have been praying every day for the victims and their families. Is it wrong of me to want to just have a good time with my family and enjoy Christmas with them?

Is it wrong to still celebrate Christmas? Honestly, no. It's tragic what happened in Connecticut, but the world shouldn't stop because of it. It would actually be much more selfish to take away the holidays from the millions of others because some psycho had to ruin it for a few. And cancel the holiday? Your co-worker sounds like an idiot. Besides, it's probably what that bastard would've wanted.

Your co-worker sounds like one of those people who likes to get up on a soap box and preach when a tragedy occurs because it makes them sound important.

Two of my friends told me today that ESPN consciously made an effort to not use the word "pistol" when referring to the pistol offense a team runs. That's just a bit much, don't you think?
You would have to be a robot to not have an emotional reaction to what happened in Connecticut to those children. But as usual, people go too far in trying to react to it. No, you shouldn't feel bad for feeling happy and enjoying this holiday. Your co-worker is being ridiculous.

Agreed. Celebrate Christmas all you want. If anything, the tragedy that happened should make you appreciate that time with your loved ones more.

If holidays were canceled every time something tragic happened somewhere in the world, no one would ever have a chance to celebrate.

You're damned right it's still ok to celebrate Christmas. Just keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers. I'm sure that sick scumbag would get his jollies in Hell knowing what he did ruined peoples holidays. Screw that.

Families suffer everyday. This was on tv though. It's a shame, but what are her plans this year?
Seriously-ask her

And, as unc40 says - your friend is a soap box-er, and it sounds like she's a super annoying one at that. Trying to guilt you for something you had no control or part of - she should be 100x more ashamed of that then you should be for wanting to go Christmas shopping.

The actions of a madman are not going to ruin my Christmas. Neither is a soapbox preacher.

Tell her she should be ashamed of having a good time any day of her life because terrible things happen all around the planet 24/7.

Why should I let the actions of a psychopath ruin my good time?

Of course you should celebrate Christmas.
Unless your friend was personally effected by this or a similar tragedy in the past they sound like a sanctimonious idiot and she's in the wrong (for trying to to make you feel bad) not you. It's the same sort of thing as the idiots that respond to any trivial argument with "why are we arguing about this when millions are dying in Africa?".
Plus did she react the same way to things like natural disasters? Did they make similar proclamations about not celebrating Christmas after the floods in Thailand last year? Or react in a similar way to any of the Tsunamis and earthquakes in recent years?

I swear every single message board or comment section has had a variation of "Why are you talking about Logo Design/Indycars/Baseball/Wrestling/Roller Coasters when children are dead in Connecticut?"

Why in god's name should people not try to enjoy Christmas? It's a day to cherish your family and loved ones, and make people happy. The woman who told you Christmas should be cancelled is just some self-righteous goon on a soapbox.
I'm a father myself, and my stomach sank when I read the news the other day. I cherish my little girl, and she's an innocent child who still needs to think that the world is spinning like normal. How do you explain cancelling Christmas to kids, and why on earth would you want to rob them of a fun and happy day in the first place? Those poor kids deserved so much better from life than what they ended up with, but it's absolutely wrong to let it negatively effect all the world's surviving children.
Bottom line - celebrate Christmas, hug your family, and try to remember how lucky you are to have them. And most importantly, make people SMILE.

I don't think anybody out there is denying that this whole Conneticut incident is sad and tragic. However I don't see why we shouldnt be allowed to celebrate Christmas if we want to. So anybody telling me to stop enjoying christmas can get lost
