I give this thread about five more hours. See, now that's just trying to push things in a direction that they haven't gone yet.

There's nothing really layered about the character at all. She's "crazy" which consists of her turning her head to the side like a dog that's a little confused, make googly eyes and skip; and then sometimes throw a comical hissy fit where she lashes out at random ring side equipment.
I think she can do more than that, but that's all the 'layer' there is to this character right now. That and being a bit of a ho.

I was a bit nervous coming into this thread, but it's much more tame than I thought it would be.
And on AJ's character. I really like it. Her and Ziggler work really well together, and they're actually taking time to explain her motivation for what she does, rather just going with "well she's crazy". It's not as good as AJ/Bryan, but much better than AJ/Punk or AJ/Cena.

Its more tolerable now that she's heel.
Before she was like a fan fiction character come to life.

Her character is pretty annoying, and most of the guys she's been paired with have had little to no chemistry with her. I think her and Dolph work together well though, and it's nice to see a Diva get so much attention and time.

I think they use 'lol, she's crazy' as an excuse for slapdash booking where they can just get her to do anything they like, whatever furthers the story, because AJ's crazy. Deus Ex MachinAJ, if you will. It's amazing how much can change in a year... This time last year, she was the designated jobber for Beth Phoenix and Natalya, so much so that a heel turn for Kaitlyn was taped, but never aired. Now, she's getting the strongest female push I've seen since Stephanie McMahon first shacked up with Triple H in late 1999. I find it harsh though that some are saying the only reason she's getting the push is because she's f***ing someone in power... Now that's something that gets overdone any time a Diva people don't like gets more TV time than the rest. In terms of her acting, I can understand everyone having different standards, but it doesn't bother me because I'm not expecting Oscar-winning acting from wrestling. Most of the male roster ain't much better, let alone most of the other Divas, so I guess the only reason why AJ's being held to a higher standard is because of her expanded role. I agree that the character is an absolute hot mess, but now they have at least got the alignment right. How was I supposed to cheer someone who'd toy with a man's emotions, only to chew them up and spit them out the very moment they don't reciprocate in kind? I wish she'd wrestle more too, because she is probably in the upper half of the division for her in-ring ability. So in the end, AJ's pretty much in the right place at the right time. WWE want a female to push to the Twilight/50 Shades of Grey demographic, and AJ's gotten the nod through residual overness from the Bryan thing carrying her over the line. It may not be the best role for her, but it is what it is, so I guess all we can do is keep riding it out. I will say one thing, though... The pop that Bryan could get if he said "AJ, shut up" again could be massive. ;D

In regards to the OP, yes and no. I say no because while she isn't exactly Julianne Moore, she isn't all that bad an actress, especially by Divas standards; she has some pretty good on-cue crying, for example. Not to mention, her character's fairly... realistic. Think about it: She starts out fairly normal - friends with Kaitlyn and Daniel Bryan. She crosses over, gets with Bryan, and that's when things start to go downhill. She gets sort of warped trying to keep him; changing aspects about herself so that he'll like her as much as she likes him. It fails, he dumps her, and she basically fractures. After that point, she's basically reduced to a genki sexpot, but for a reason - this is what she thinks men want, and it sure as hell doesn't help that most of the crowd eggs her on in doing this. She latches onto every single guy after Bryan who's remotely nice to her - Punk, Cena, even Kane - all the while, mugging for the crowd and being as over the top as possible to get as loud reactions as possible. Hell, even now, she's probably in it for the attention, and not only is Dolph giving it to her, the crowd's giving their share too, for the PDA and for her desire to cause as much harm to Cena as possible. She is the quintessential famewhore, for lack of a better word; jumping from the highest platform she can tolerate in the hopes that it'll be the most viewed video on YouTube. And yet, here's why I ultimately say no: I hate that the spunky AJ who actually wrestled since she was a wrestler, is now essentially playing a member of The Godfather's HO train. Instead of a Divas division with Eve, AJ, Kaitlyn, Natalya and Naomi, wrestling and being involved in at least halfway decent storylines, were subjected to pretty much a 2 Divas division and these craptastic storylines involving AJ. Everyone involved in this thing could be doing so much more and be being used so much better. They could be doing so much more with the time they've spent on what is essentially an aimless series in the saga of "What's AJ Gonna Do Next?" As entertaining as the character has been, she would have been much better utilized in the Divas division - if they ever utilized the Division itself.

Someone's pretty much going to have to become a counterbalance to her (most likely Kaitlyn) just so WWE doesn't get murdered over the unfortunate implications.

More to the point, for a good chunk of the last 6-7 months she's been one of the main focal points of the show, and there really hasnt been any logical progression of character. Sure, she's a heel now, but shes still a karazaaay chick who is unstable. Have her be obsessed with winning the diva's title. It at least opens up more possiblities for her

Instead of a Divas division with Eve, AJ, Kaitlyn, Natalya and Naomi, wrestling and being involved in at least halfway decent storylines, were subjected to pretty much a 2 Divas division and these craptastic storylines involving AJ.If there's anything truly regrettable about this year, it's the fact that we've essentially had only one Diva in play for the entire year in Eve Torres; I think AJ has been in ten-or-twelve televised matches this year, two of them against Vickie Guerrero. Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix were used sporadically at best in the first half of the year, and they're gone now. Layla came back from injury, won the Divas championship, and proceeded to more or less vanish until it was time to lose to Eve, and has been a jobber since. And no matter how much Michael Cole tries to push Kaitlyn/Eve as a big deal, it doesn't take away the fact that, up until this week, Kaitlyn has lost every match the two of them has had. People have talked about how dire the division was before, but this year may have been the worst year for the Division in a while. Kharma's gone. Beth Phoenix walked. Maxine, who I think had all the potential in the world, walked. Naomi wasn't even in action until this past Sunday, and that was just a one time thing. Layla and Alicia are more or less on the backburner. And AJ Lee, who may have actually had more television time than any of the WWE Divas combined, is having nothing to do with the division. The worst part is, WWE knows it. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they believed a huge part of AJ Lee's success is her not being "bogged down" in the Divas division. They know their Divas division is f***ed, and they won't do anything about it.

I hate her character too. More nonsensical booking when the obvious answer is right in front of them. Plucky underdog face of the Divas division.

Considering how quickly people condemn the idea of WWE doing anything long term, layered or clever, I find it a bit tough to swallow that so many people buy that AJ's character has been deliberately fickle all the time. I think they use 'lol, she's crazy' as an excuse for slapdash booking where they can just get her to do anything they like, whatever furthers the story, because AJ's crazy. You pretty much hit the nail right on the head. It's just lazy.

I agree that despite being featured heavily her character has barely progressed, that wouldn't be so much of a problem if she actually wrestled. The GM angle really messed her character up and now too much has happened for no logical reason in too short a space of time.
I think her acting is OK. Her body language is strong which means people in the back row can see what she's trying to do, wrestling isn't really the place for subtly. Her delivery is a weak point but I don't think it's completely her fault, she seems most natural when speaking a million miles an hour so I get the feeling she's been told to slow down and has taken that a bit too far. She's still better than many others though. In a similar way I expect she's been told not to acknowledge the crowd which unfortunately makes her character less realistic.
Finally I don't think it's fair when people say something like "all she does is skip and tilt her head". They're good trademarks that again helps the character and you make nearly anything sound stupid when you strip it down to just the core points (Daniel Bryan just says yes/no and kicks a lot, baseball is just men hitting a ball with a stick and running around etc).
So in conclusion her character is flawed but doesn't suck.

AJ makes me turn my tv off. Her character is beyond pathetic and lame. You can go to the local mall/comic-con/cos-play event and see hundreds of these types of girls running around and they are ALL annoying beyond belief. Like John Cena, I am sure IRL she is a nice likeable person, but the character is Gooker Award to the 500th power.
