"PUNK, YOU'RE BIG NASTY BASTARD AND YOUR MAMA SAID SO!" Punk, im gonna beat you, CUZ IM BIZZAH! (or if he's a big Jack Tunney fan): Punk, your actions lately have been heinous. Therefore, i have come to the decision that i must face you one on one. Furthermore, Paul Heyman will be banned from ringside or risk permanent suspension.

Honest question: if the monster schtick only lasts so long, why could ECW pull it off? Smaller roster, maybe? Mike Awesome and Taz were both huge.

Forgive me if I say I really do not get all the Ryback hate on the forum. Sure, his gimmick is blatantly cut out of the mould of Goldberg-but so what? Just about every wrestling character is a redo of one that we have already seen a million times already. I get the impression that all it really boils down to is that he is gettign a mega-push instead of a FAN darling like Daniel Bryan or Ziggler.

Taz would go out thre and choke people out or just suplex the hell out of them. Awesome was a monster that could still fly with the best of them. Awesome also had absolute wars with Masato Tanaka as well as having a far better finisher then Ryback.

Yeah I appreciate the quoting but the "change" is a giant musclebound hoss? In WWE? Ehhh...

It always irks me when people say CM Punk is part of the future of wrestling. Him and Cena are practically the same age and they're both banged up.
CM Punk is the present. Not the future.

Not trying to bitch about Punk here, but he's not really so much 'the future' as he is 'the now'. 34 Years old and already on top (even if it's the HHH heel sort of on top). Same thing with Sheamus.
He's the present, the now. Bryan might be 'The Future' if he ever becomes 'The Now' and feuds with 'Now' guys like Punk, Sheamus, etc..
Ryback isn't the kind of guy who can carry a company entirely by himself, but I'm of the mind that WWE shouldn't be carried entirely of the back of one guy (which is what has been so frustrating about Cena's time on top. Not even guys that management loved, like Orton or Batista, were ever presented as a true "1B" to Cena's "1A". They just cycled in and out every now and then.).
That's why it's tough to annoint someone "The Future". Because for someone to be The Future, they've got to be someone who isn't established yet. And we all know how good WWE has been at establishing people lately (not at all).

Ryback's just 3 years younger than those guys himself.
I think the OP meant Punk was the future more in that he's an evolved version of a pro wrestler. He's soaked up all the good stuff from the last 3 decades and spun it all through his own personality. He understands the importance of and excells at promos and character-work, against the whole 'nila midget indy gawd label, and still kills it in the ring.
Ryback is a wrecking ball, CM Punk is an artist, and artists are the ones that push a medium forward.

With regards to who will be "The Future", probably no one currently on the midcard or upper, considering their ages relative to Cena's, unless Cena retires suddenly or steps off his perch.

The Future of Wrestling probably hasn't even started training yet.

John Cena is the prototype (no pun intended) for what a top star should be. Big and strong enough to be the superhero, but small enough in stature to believably play the little man, underdog, face-in-peril role when needed. Unless Ryback was willing to drop some of his muscle mass, while still training to improve his strength, he can't really play this role.
The future top star should ideally be someone like John Cena, although it isn't absolutely necessary.

I get the feeling that quote was more from Ryback than someone from the back. If you read interviews with him, he seems to have a real appreciation for the past, and an attitude in which he truly BELIEVES he is the future. Whether or not he turns out to be right can only be debated with no definitive answer right now, but I absolutely love the attitude and drive he has.
Remember the wwe 13 video with Punk, JR, and Austin? Austin was saying that there were only a couple guys in the current locker room that he felt had the drive to be a top guy. They need more people with that kind of drive.

I've been quoting With Leather's Brandon Stroud a lot recently, but it's just because he's so damn right all the time. Here's his take on Ryback quoting Owen Hart in his weekly "Best and Worst of Raw" column:

What's so wrong about being a big muscular guy? It's wrestling. There's always a place for guys like that and it's not a bad thing. Ryback being over is great. Another popular wrestler. Who cares if he's a big dude?
Unless it's one of those 'change is great unless the change doesn't involve these handpicked people, then it sucks."

I'm pretty sure Ryback was only scripted to quote Owen Hart because WWE wants to get Owen's name into people's minds as they want to put him in the Hall of Fame in 2013.
