Looking back is it that bad...
I enjoyed the show. This was one of my first Wrestlemanias and it had a great theme. The ending was cheesy and confusing a bit but I could just imagine them doing the same thing with Cena in Hogan's spot, running into to defend a friend and winning the world title in seconds and pissing everyone off in the process. PG era madness at it's best so looking back now I'd say it wasn't so bad although some people think it was one of the worst Manias.

I have a lot of affection for this show and I think it has a lot to do with it being the first PPV I watched as it happened. If you like Hulk Hogan, there's a pretty ok narrative about him struggling and failing to win the tag belts and then finally saving the day at the end of the show. This kinda requires you putting aside all the ramifications and implications of this beyond one show on one night, but viewed through that lens it's a satisfying show I think.

I enjoyed the roman theme and outdoor setting. At least its look was memorable.
About Hogan winning the title at the end, I feel it was the only way to end an otherwise woeful event. They were backed into a corner with Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna. If Yoko won, it would be seen as anti-climatic, if Bret won, it would halt Yoko's monster push. Though personally, I don't think Yokozuna should've had that push in the first place, at least not as fast as he did, considering everything that has happened afterwards.

It was a decent enough card but people don't realize back in 1993 this would of been great.
Two giants battling (Taker/Gonzales) you had Hogan trying to take down the Evil Money Inc and you had the Monster Heel of the WWF at the time get toppled by the loveable hero and baby face.
I definitely think sitting there and watching it live would of been better than watching it 15 years later.

Heenan nearly falling off a camel then Macho Man lifting Brain's toga while giving the toothy grin and thumbs up is all I allow myself to remember from this event.

I think it's absolutely that bad.
If you've only seen the event once, I can see remembering it more fondly. It probably has the coolest setting/over-all presentation of any Wrestlemania, and when making a first impression (especially if you had the impressionable mind of a child at the time) that goes a long way.
But the card itself is awful. The poor finish isn't even in the show's top three problems. It's a largely inconsequential event full of either unsatisfying endings (Michaels-Tatanka), letdowns (Luger-Perfect), head-scratching bores (Ramon-Backlund), matches that never shift into second gear (Steiners-Shrinkers), matches that look incredible on paper but then don't happen (Kamala-Bigelow...yes, I'm still bitter), and showdowns that may seem cool but their sheer length result in abominations (Taker-Gonzalez).
The goal of most Manias is to show a sports-entertainment spectacle that's unforgettable for either storylines culminating or the "THAT ONE INCREDIBLE UNFORGETTABLE MATCH" mentality, but Wrestlemania IX doesn't have much of either. With Wrestlemania 13 you can always go back to Bret-Austin and Wrestlemania 27 has the 15 good minutes of Triple H-Undertaker (or Cody-Rey and Punk-Orton, or Zach Ryder singing "Friday"), and as bad as Wrestlemania 11 is (and it really, really is) the roster was depleted in such a way that there wasn't a whole lot else you could do with the show.
There's no excuse why a second, third or (and my God have mercy on your soul) fourth viewing of Wrestlemania IX is as brutal as it is. As much as I love Crush-Doink, it has to be a bottom 3 Mania.

I actually liked that Razor-Backlund match. It was a nice exchange that could have gone on a few more minutes. And the crowd getting behind Razor seemed to set up his face turn in the coming months.

One thing that really helps this show for me, and I know this is really odd, but how they point out the sky getting overcast around 2/3 into the card. This is around the Perfect and Gonzalez matches, setting up a sense of hopelessness that reaches its apex when Yoko steals the title from Bret.

It was Super cartoony, but unique. No really GREAT matches and the Main Event and it's end were kinda grabage even though the fans in attendance seemed to mark for it.

I like the setting and the way the announcers wore togas. And I enjoyed the HBK/Tatanka match and the Steiners vs. Headshrinkers. But it was a really sub-par show, hardly worthy of the Wrestlemania moniker.

I think adding King of the Ring really changed how this event all played out. With a sudden stop gap between Mania and Summerslam some stuff had to carry over.
One poster commented on how, by the far the best match on the card Steiners vs. Shrinkers never shifted into second gear, then laments how Bam Bam vs. Kamala was nixed, really???
Yeah, Tatanka shit the bed and ruined his career, a decent match with Steiners and Headshrinkers, Razor shifted his career into another gear by beating a vetern, Doink gets the one up on Crush, Money Inc keeps the belts without hurting Hogan, Perfect is a way better heel than face, still sets up his match with HBK, Taker could have gotten 56 lifetimes and never dragged a decent match out of Gonzales and Bret was backed into a corner against Yoko.
I don't think this card would have gotten shit on as it did if Hogan didn't win at the end, which all your bitching can't erase it the fact it was by far , far, far the largest pop of the night. Who else was on the roster to make it better?

I really don't know what to say to that, incredible on paper? How so? I think it could've added a lot because Kamala was a fun character at that time and Bam Bam was a miracle worker in the ring.

Exactly. Kamala was fun, Bam Bam knew how to play to a wrestler's strengths, and in that sort of a setting it could have been a blast. Those two character had never really crossed anyone similar to each other, so it would have been the type of once-in-a-lifetime first encounter that Wrestlemania is made for.

I miss the Wrestlemanias where you could have midcarder vs. midcarder matches and the crowd didn't sit silent/s**t all over them. Kamala/Bam Bam would've been interesting for me on that level.
I wish they'd put Santana/Shango on the main show someplace, instead of being just the dark match. (Just because Santana won it - woulda been nice to give him a 2nd WM win before he left the company a couple months later)
The Razor/Backlund match was also an interesting one. After basically debuting in the main event (with Flair, Savage and Perfect at SurSer, then wrestling Bret for the title at Rumble), he gets a mid-show match at Wrestlemania. And it worked. As Heenan screamed afterwards, "He outwrestled the wrestler!" A match like that would've been (and currently would be) seen as a major demotion for a character......yet it wasn't, as his greatest days with the WWF were still ahead of him.
