The Shamrock thread got me thinking. What was the purpose of his run? I know Severn was already trained as a professional wrestler even while trained as an MMA fighter, but was it to just to follow in on Shamrock's run? Play up their UFC rivalry?
I think Severn was only in there from the Spring of 1998 to about January of 1999. I think his last appearance was at the Royal Rumble.
If they really tried to play up his rivalry with Shamrock, they didn't really do a good job at it. They tried to pass it off as those two being heated rivals but were "forced" to team up for a tag match, but in the end, they just acted like any normal tag team. They didn't act like reluctant tag partners.
I know Severn was an added factor in the Owen/Shamrock feud. Severn being guest referee in the Dungeon Match. Same with Severn being in Owen's corner in the Lion's Den* Match at Summerslam.
So was there any reason why it didn't work out for him in the WWF? At least Shamrock had a good two years there. Severn didn't make it a whole year.
EDITED*

All I remember is The Rock legit made me think Severn could and would kill him if Rock ever strayed more than three feet from the ropes in their KOTR match.

I'm sure they would have loved to do more with Severn/Shamrock but neither guy would probably want to job.
Plus, there's something kind of odd about two real fighters fake fighting. It would make the WWF look really fake in comparison
I do kind of remember talk about a "fighter's stable", maybe there's some guys they tried to bring in but couldn't get.

He showed no charisma, no emotion, no character, no personality.
Boring.

He might of had difficulty adapting to the WWF style or left on his own merit.

I would guess he was brought in after the success of Shamrock.

wasn't he brought in because he was NWA champ and WWF was doing stuff with the NWA titles at the time?

Came here to post this. Badass tune, and one that needs to be re-used today.

didn't he want to shoot the rumble? Yeah he said he was going to do it since it was basically his last night, but Shamrock probably would have just gone out early and beat the crap out of him had he done it to one man.

For such an amazing fighter and decorated (real) wrestler, he sucked a lot in the squared circle.

He should have been someones bodyguard. He'd look good in a suit and be thought of as legit devistating. Having him be a vanilla submission wrestler who didnt like Steve Blackman wasnt so hot.

only good thing that could've come out of his run was a shooter stable (w/ Shamrock & Blackman) that was teased for a bit during summer 98, unfortunately nothing happened
funny how he debuted: generic title holding dangerous heel w/ Cornette as mouthpiece, squashes Savio Vega & a Headbanger, turns face when he accepts HHH's open invitation for the EU title and dumps Cornette, does NOTHING afterwars for a while until entering the KOTR tourney and feuding with D'Lo for a short while (after injuring D'Lo)
