..has warped our perspective on wrestling. For me, it's simply this. A guy that I'm a fan of was champion, and he lost to a guy I don't particularly care for. It's pure fandom right now. None of the extra-curricular stuff. I'm a Punk fan. Punk lost. I'm sad. Why this is such a hard concept to grasp, I'm not sure. I saw this post and was going to reply in that thread, but I felt this needed its own thread, and would make for a better discussion. This is my response: The month leading up to Sheamus beating Cena for the title in the tables match, I had no internet, and honestly, watching wrestling without visiting a forum felt..refreshing. I was enjoying it more than I would be if I were checking message boards and reading reports. Sure, I would occasionally still question a few things, but I also wasn't criticizing every little thing that I saw. It felt genuinely good watching wrestling again, just like the old days before the internet age. Then I get my internet back, and while I did miss discussing wrestling (and other things) with others, everything eventually went back to normal again, and the cynicism returned. What do you think? Are we better off watching wrestling without the internet?

Eh...I was blowing up over little things before I started checking things online.
When Austin beat Angle for the title a couple weeks after Angle had won it, I was insanely pissed off at how crappy I thought that was booked.
And I didn't even know what "booked" was at that time.

I really only go into overly smark mode when somebody I don't like wins, or hell even when I'm defending my favorites (See H, Triple). I avoid dirt sheets like the plague and only fantasy book when I really REALLY want to see something happen, and even then I try not to go into specifics. But to answer your question, I really don't look at wrestling the same as I did when I wasn't part of the IWC. It's like revealing the man behind the curtain, you can close the curtain but you've already seen what's behind it.

I had to come on here right after finding out the Rock won. I get this sort of sick pleasure out of watching people flip their lid over this stuff. I understand we all have our guys we root for, but wrestling is kinda like watching baseball. You got your favorite team or teams, they might win some and lose some, but chances are they're probably never gonna win the World Series.
It seems like the people here are San Diego Padres fans.

I would still be fairly pissed about tonight without the Internet.
There's a lot of bad writing/booking in the WWE right now. Cutting off views to a message board wouldn't blind me to that, I don't think.

I think that was a particularly interesting time in wrestling. Batista's heel turn. Randy Orton weaking havoc, Sheamus killing people, Ventura hosting Raw, Straight Edge Savior CM Punk. Christian carrying the ECW flag.

I'm just really glad I closed my laptop to watch the Rumble tonight. Maybe that's why the negativity threw me for a loop. I had a blast.

This, I tried watching wrestling without using the net a couple years back and for those two months actually did enjoy the products more.

I agree with Lancers, I read and laugh at the rage some people post.
I've been rolling for about a good hour now, not just from posts on this site either. There are thousand word essays written in 4 minutes about how the WWE destroyed the universe by having the Rock win tonight.
And I love reading ever single one of them.

I'll never understand why people who are members of a wrestling message board bitch about people who share their opinions on a wrestling message board.
Do some take it to the extreme? Yes. But those who are never happy are just as bad as those who think you should enjoy everything the WWE throws out.

What do you think? Are we better off watching wrestling without the internet? I don't think so at all, not for me anyway. I think a little bit of nostalgia influences this idea that we should just be sitting down and lopping all that happens in wrestling up. All forms of art open themselves up to scrutiny once it's out in the world. I see the aftermath of Royal Rumble and how everyone gets worked up, some more than others and I do catch myself and others getting wrapped up in minutia at times. But everyone does this with everything, music, movies, art, and wrestling is no different. It's easy to let your guard down when you're a kid because you don't know any better. As you get older you get a better sense of what you like and don't like, and that's what gets discussed on forums like this. I can still sit down and see faults in things that I love, I hated the ending of the Royal Rumble match but I can overlook it. I love Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy to death but I can name you tons of things I don't like about them. I feel like the internet has heightened my understanding and appreciation of professional wrestling as an art form. Just as it has with music and film, it's gone beyond "I hope John Cena finally gets even with John Laurenitis" to really having an appreciation for the sacrifices they make for their craft.

Do some take it to the extreme? Yes. But those who are never happy are just as bad as those who think you should enjoy everything the WWE throws out. Therein lies the dilemma of being a WWE fan. Look, I don't like the Rock and Cena main eventing another Wrestlemania. But like CM Punk said a couple of weeks ago, "I don't matter". The company answers to shareholders. They also are always looking for an opportunity to get some mainstream attention. In their world, the Rock being WWE Champion will provide that. Will it work? Depends. But that's a risk they are more than willing to take. They also know while there is a vocal minority out there who may be upset with Ziggler not winning the Rumble or Punk not retaining the title, they know that the majority of those people will still watch Wrestlemania in spite of their insistence that they won't. Because like my aforementioned baseball analogy, you root for the people you want to root for through good times and the more occasional bad times.

A lot of their arrogance is the result of having no competition, sadly. Like you said, they know most wrestling fans will watch out of love for professional wrestling. Basically, the WWE takes advantage of their fans. We're all in an abusive relationship with them.

I'm usually NOT a "lol IWC" type of guy. Infact, I was once called out for white knighting the IWC too often.
Tonight though, I don't get how there can be anger at how things played out. I really can't. And I usually see both sides to an argument.

I'm just really glad I closed my laptop to watch the Rumble tonight. Maybe that's why the negativity threw me for a loop. I had a blast. Honestly, that's how I watch most wrestling, I find it much more entertaining to just watch the show and not over analyze things until well after the fact.

I don't think I'll ever understand gloating over people being passionate about something they enjoy. It be like me laughing hysterically at you crying because your kid fell off their bike for the first time and got a sprained wrist.
It's just makes the person whose gloating look like a complete ass.
Maybe I'm in the wrong for enjoying wrestling as much as I do, Maybe I should just keep quiet as poor decision after poor decision is being made booking wise.
I'm sorry....I can't do that, I can't pretend to not want a company to do so much better then it is, To see again the day where I won't be embarrassed to say I watch wrestling in public.
The Internet has allowed me to discuss and enjoy the product long after I stopped watching it on TV, So thank you internet forums for letting me have that last string of hope to hold onto that one day, just maybe, it'll get better.
